Steve Johnson in Trouble again

January 17th 2008 06:51

Troubled cat Steve Johnson has got himself in hot water again after being caught going 78kmph over the speed limit.

Johnson who was caught doing 128kmph in a 50 zone was pulled over at around 8pm in East Geelong.

Team mate Shannon Byrnes was also in the car with Johnson at the time.

He has lost his license for 12 months and will have to face court in Geelong at a later date.

Geelong's leadership group will meet tomorrow to discuss a punishment.

A club statement issued this afternoon said Johnson was on his way to Eastern Gardens golf course about 8.15pm last night when he was booked.

“We are extremely disappointed that Steve was found to have exceeded the speed limit in this manner and we are thankful that Steve, his passenger Shannon Byrnes or any other people were not injured," the statement said.

"We know the risks associated with speeding and speed is a major cause of road crashes in Victoria. Steve’s actions were dangerous and unacceptable and could have resulted in tragic circumstances,” Geelong ceo Brian Cook said.

“Ultimately every individual is responsible for their actions and the consequences of those actions. Our players understand that society holds them to a high standard. As a club we will continue to educate everyone associated with the club of the need to meet these standards.

“Steve has worked hard over the past year to regain respect but this is a major setback in this regard. In the past many of Steve’s issues have been alcohol-related however that is not the case on this occasion.”

Johnson was famously suspended last year after not informing the club after he was arrested by police while at home in Wangaratta.

He came back to play a blistering season earning All-Australian Selection as well as winning a premiership and Norm Smith medal.

Geelong has TAC signs around the ground, however they are not an official sponsor of the club.

Fremantle - $10

Hawthorn - $10

Port Adelaide - $11

St Kilda - $11

West Coast - $12

AFL Central Best Buy: $10 on Bulldogs at $35
Outstanding odds for the bulldogs. No way near the 3rd worst side in the league. Akermanis will be fully fit, and have also got Adelaide duo Scott Welsh and Ben Hudson on their list. Recruited well and will push for a top 8 spot. $35 is ridiculous odds for a decent team.

The Latest Brownlow Medal Odds

January 11th 2008 04:56

Chris Judd - $10
Gary Ablett - $12
Jonathan Brown - $13
Daniel Kerr - $13
Adam Goodes - $15
Sam Mitchell - $17
Jimmy Bartel - $21
Simon Black - $21
Matthew Pavlich - $21
Simon Black - $21

Chris Judd at his new home Carlton is still leading the race for his second Chas Brownlow medal. He is closely followed by Gary Ablett JNR who will look to repeat his solid form last year. Jonathan Brown and Daniel Kerr are offering good money for people who want and early bet. Last years winner Jimmy Bartel is sitting at $21 and is offering good money.

AFL Central Bet of the week: $10 on Lenny Hayes @ $126

Seems to have flown under the radar in early betting. Hayes is one of the AFL's elite midfielders and can easily win a brownlow. With a solid preseason Hayes will push his name forward for 3 votes in a lot of games next year. 126 is way above what his market value should be.

Drunk Magpie Sharrod Wellingham

Collingwood rookie Sharrod Wellingham has cost Collingwood it's TAC sponsorship after being pulled over drink driving in Lorne on the weekend.

The sponsorship is believed to be worth around 1.2 million dollars over 3 years, with the deal being in its final year.

Collingwood had been the face of TAC's "Wipe Off Five" campaign to promote driver safety.

Wellingham whoblew 0.13 claimed at his media conference that he was moving a car when caught.

A remorseful Wellingham was fined $5,000 by the Magpies.

President Eddie McGuire also gave his thoughts on the matter, saying that drink driving was dangerous and stupid.

"Colingwood has been sponsored by the TAC for the past seven years and we are extremely proud of what we have achieved in that time.

"We have supported the launch of the Wipe off 5 campaign and other campaigns focusing on drink driving, speeding, fatigue and inexperience.

"It is therefore with regret that we have made this decision. Given our position as a leader in promoting road safety messages in the communtiy, however, we feel it is the right thing to do.

"The importance and credibility of road safety messages is paramount and therefore it is not appropriate for us to remain in a sponsorship partnership with the TAC." McGuire said.

Also in the car were Hawk players Simon Taylor and Lance Franklin.

They escaped without any penalty.

Ablett: Walking out on the club

Nathan Ablett for the first time in his football career fronted a packed media at skilled stadium. Flanked by coach Mark Thompson Nathan confirmed many Geelongs fans fears by saying he will walk away from the game.

"I have decided to have a break from AFL football for the time being," he said. "I feel as if I don't have the passion and commitment to continue playing at the highest level. To do so would therefore be unfair to the club and my teammates.

"I am planning on getting away from football for now, however I may look to continue at VFL level.

"Being involved in winning a grand final is something that doesn't happen to a lot of players and I feel privileged and honoured to be part of our 2007 premiership."

Mark Thompson believed that Nathan may be a chance to come back in 2009.

"We would like to have a bit more time for Nathan to make up his mind completely," he said. "He hasn't made his mind up completely so we are hoping that one day he comes back, and that one day is pretty soon.

"There has always been something about Nathan which we were a little bit unsure about. He's not really like a lot of other young men who are so passionate about the game and would do almost anything to play.

"But in saying that he has got enormous ability and we have not given up hope that he will play for Geelong again. If he needs a bit of time now, we will give him that time and support him whichever way we can.

"In the interest of football we hope that one day he gets back to playing."

Thompson also stated that Nathan's brother Gary was disappointed that Nathan decided to quit.

Talking on SEN Nathan's manage Liam Pickering said that Nathan would be a good chance to come back and play VFL in 2008.

"He is going to take some time out for a while, after that we will see if he wants to play VFL football."

Other than that Pickering believes that Nathan may pursue a career in building, taking up an apprenticeship.
