Cats down Port

February 28th 2009 08:05
MATHEW Stokes has inspired Geelong to an 18-point win over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

Stokes booted three last-quarter goals to lift the Cats to a 0.11.6 (72) to 1.6.9 (54) victory.

Geelong will now take on either Hawthorn or Carlton for the right to play in the NAB Cup Grand Final.

The loss was made worse for Port with promising youngster Hamish Hartlett leaving the field with a shoulder injury.

Stokes finished the match with four goals while James Bartel and Paul Chapman won plenty of the football.

For Port Adelaide, Nathan Krakeour generated plenty of run while Kane Cornes and Josh Carr were busy contributors.

The first half was an uninspiring affair with both sides struggling to produce their best in the blustery conditions.

The Cats took a one-point lead into quarter-time and maintained that advantage at half-time before kicking the only two goals in and opened up a 10-point lead heading into the final change after two unanswered goals in the third term.

The second goal - a running major from Bartel showed Geelong’s class with the Cats moving the ball from half-back to attack with a series of handballs.

Port could have easily been in front at three-quarter time but they failed to capitalise in front of goal, booting a wasteful 0.4 for the term.

The Power closed to within a point in the final term thanks to a super goal from Daniel Motlop but Port had no answer for Stokes who guided his team home.

Dons win thriller

February 27th 2009 12:20
ESSENDON has booked its place in the NAB Cup semi-finals with a thrilling two-point win over Brisbane at Telstra Dome on Friday night.

The Bombers led at every change and withstood a late charge from the Lions to prevail 0.9.13 (67) to 1.7.14 (65).

The win was soured somewhat for Essendon with midfielder Mark McVeigh limping from the field late in the second term. He sat out the rest of the match with a protective moon boot on his left foot.

In some good news for the Bombers, Jason Winderlich, Scott Lucas and Alwyn Davey made successful returns from injury.

David Hille dominated in the ruck while Winderlich finished with a team-high 24 disposals, seven marks and five tackles. He received good support in the middle from Jobe Watson and former Adelaide Crow Hayden Skipworth.

For the Lions, defender Josh Drummond was influential with 30 possessions while key forward Daniel Bradshaw booted three goals.

Brisbane failed to kick a major in a scrappy first term but they trailed by just seven points at quarter-time thanks to a super goal from Scott Harding.

Both sides struggled to find an avenue to goal in the second quarter with just two goals booted for the term as the Dons took an 11-point advantage into half-time.

The margin blew out to 19 points in the third term when David Myers kicked truly.

But that only served to spark the Lions into action with Ashley McGrath slotting one home before back-to-back majors from Bradshaw reduced the deficit to just one point heading into the final change.

Essendon kicked away once again early in the final term thanks to two goals from Andrew Lovett but the Lions refused to give in with two majors from promising young forward Mitch Clark setting up a thrilling finish.

The Lions had their chances in the dying stages to snatch victory but they failed to capitalise in front of goal with Clark, Harding and Jack Redden all missing gettable opportunities.

The Bombers will now face Collingwood at Telstra Dome next Friday night for the right to play in the NAB Cup grand final the following Friday.

Pies spoil Cousins' return

February 26th 2009 11:50
COLLINGWOD has spoiled Ben Cousins’ return to AFL football with a convincing 46-point win over Richmond at Telstra Dome on Thursday night.

The Magpies held the Tigers goalless in the final term as they cruised to a comfortable 1.13.10 (97) to 2.3.15 (51) victory.

The loss was made worse for Richmond with skipper Kane Johnson limped off with what appeared to be a knee injury in the third term.

Scott Pendlebury and Dane Swan were busy contributors in the middle for the Pies. Travis Cloke provided a constant target in attack while youngster Dayne Beams showed some promising signs.

For the Tigers, Cousins showed the football world he hasn’t lost any of his class, racking up 21 touches in his first match since the lifting of his 12 month suspension following his much-publicised drug addiction.

He received good support from Nathan Foley while Andrew Raines generated plenty of run from defence.

In a contest which failed to reach any great heights it was Collingwood’s efficiency in attack that proved to be the difference.

The Magpies kicked 4.2 in the first term compared to Richmond who wasted their chances in front of goal, booting a wayward 1.5.

Despite their poor kicking in front of goal the Tigers trailed by just six points at quarter time thanks to a super goal from new skipper Chris Newman.

Both sides struggled to find an avenue to goal in the second quarter with just two goals kicked for the term as the Magpies took a one-point lead into the main break.

The third term was a tight affair before the Magpies broke the game open with three goals in a seven-minute burst to take a handy 11-point lead into the final change.

Richmond failed to fire a shot in the final as the Pies slammed on five unanswered goals, including a super goal from Alan Didak to book a place in the NAB Cup semi-finals.

Proud free to play

February 26th 2009 00:09
BRISBANE LIONS midfielder Albert Proud will line-up against Essendon in Friday night's NAB Cup quarter-final at Telstra Dome despite being subject to criminal proceedings.

The 20-year-old is still under investigation by police after he allegedly glassed a female patron at a Gold Coast bar on January 31.

But the Lions said on Wednesday night that its club-imposed ban on the 20-year-old had been lifted.

Countdown clock for trial only: Anderson

February 25th 2009 05:49
THE countdown clock is 'a long way' from becoming a part of the home-and-away season, according to AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson.

Asked if the countdown clock, which is being trialled at Telstra Dome for the remainder of the NAB Cup could be used in this year's regular season, Anderson said: "It's not something we're looking at for this season. We're contemplating it at this stage.

"If there was absolutely overwhelming and positive feedback to it, then we might consider it."

Anderson also said he isn't concerned that players could be adversely affected by knowing how much time there is left in a quarter.

"The players, the coaches, most people at home, people in boxes already know how much time there is to go," he said.

"The runners already tell the players, so I don't think it'll have too much affect from a player's point of view other than perhaps it might minimise the need for people to run out there and tell them how much time there is to go."

Fraser quits

February 25th 2009 05:33
ST KILDA chief executive Archie Fraser has quit the club to take up a role with Football Federation Australia as the new head of the A-League.

Fraser, who has been St Kilda's CEO since mid-2006, said the opportunity to be the new boss of the A-League was too good to refuse.

“This wasn't an easy decision for me to make but when I weighed it up – to run an entire league and return to the game that I played for so many years and have a long history with – it was an opportunity that I couldn't refuse,” Fraser told Saints fans.

“It's with a heavy heart that I leave the club and people that I've grown to love like family.”

Fraser, who worked as a consultant to the Saints for several years before joining the club as general manager in October, 2005, will continue on in the role until a replacement is found.

St Kilda chairman Greg Westaway thanked Fraser for his 'signifcant contribution' to the club.

“I personally thank Archie for his significant contribution over the last four years with the club,” Westaway said.

"As CEO Archie steered the club through a difficult period of change at the board and operating level and should be commended," said Westaway.

"I sincerely wish him well as he seeks fresh challenges in the future".

Countdown clock introduced for NAB Cup

February 25th 2009 03:46
THE AFL has announced it will display a countdown clock at Telstra Dome for the remainder of the NAB Cup.

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said on Wednesday that fans at Telstra Dome will be kept right up to date with how much time remains in every quarter and the practice may become a part of the home-and-away season if supporters back the move.

"The NAB Cup does enable us to trial different things that may or may not be introduced down the track, and the use of a countdown clock for fans is one area we would like to look at, starting with this Thursday's match between Collingwood and Richmond," Anderson said.

"Currently, the television viewer has access to the official time while the coaches, and by extension the players, are aware of the time remaining with a direct link to the official timekeepers.

"The only people in the ground who don't know the exact time remaining in a match are the fans in the crowd."

"There are two distinct views - one that a supporter should be able to know the time remaining, and the other that the suspense of not knowing when the siren will sound adds to the tension of a close game."

"We will trial a countdown clock … and will be asking our fans to express their views and give us some feedback on the trial. We particularly want the views of those fans who have been at the matches where the trial has operated."

Fans will also know exactly how long remains until play starts again with countdowns between quarters.

New date for NAB Cup GF

February 24th 2009 08:40
THE NAB Cup grand final will be moved forward a day if a Victorian-based club or Port Adelaide earns hosting rights.

That means the final will be held on Friday March 13 at Telstra Dome so long as the Brisbane Lions do not win the right to host.

The decision to move the grand final a day forward was made after the Victorian Goverment made a request for the pre-season decider to be moved from its original March 14 to avoid a clash with the Victorian Bushfire Appeal concert to be staged at the MCG on the same day.

Lions rookie out for the season

February 24th 2009 03:52
BRISBANE Lions rookie Pat Garner will miss the entire 2009 AFL season after undergoing a knee reconstruction late last week.

Garner, who was picked up by the Lions with selection No.27 in the 2004 National Draft, missed the entire 2006 and 2007 seasons to reconstructions.

The 21-year-old re-injured his troublesome right knee during pre-season training but neither he or the club was aware of the full extent of the damage until he visited a specialist earlier this month.

Motlop, Young accept reprimands

February 24th 2009 03:39
HAWTHORN premiership wingman Clinton Young and Port Adelaide's Daniel Motlop are both free to play in this weekend's NAB Cup quarter-finals after accepting reprimands from the AFL's Match Review Panel.

Both Young, who took Melbourne star Aaron Davey's feet from under him after he jumped for a mark near the boundary, and Motlop, who collected Sydney youngster Jesse White high with an innocuous bump, would have risked one-game suspensions had they elected to head to the AFL Tribunal this week

But the decision to plead guilty means Young can play for the Hawks when they clash with Carlton at Telstra Dome on Sunday while Motlop is free to line up for the Power against Geelong at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

Motlop, Young escape suspension

February 23rd 2009 06:09
PORT ADELAIDE star Daniel Motlop and Hawthorn premiership wingman Clinton Young have both escaped with reprimands from the AFL match review panel.

Both were hit initially with just level one rough conduct charges, which equates to 125 points or a one match suspension but that can be reduced to 93.75 points and a reprimand if both players plead guilty.

Motlop's feet were off the ground when he made contact to the shoulder of Sydney youngster Jesse White during Sunday's NAB Cup clash at Manuka Oval but the panel only assessed the incident as negligent conduct meaning Motlop can play against Geelong in Saturday's NAB Cup quarter final if he accepts the charge.

Young appeared to take his eyes off the ball when he crashed into the back of Melbourne star Aaron Davey during the Hawks' thrilling first-round NAB Cup win at Aurora Stadium in Launceston on Saturday.

But the match review panel only viewed the clash as negligent conduct and low impact, which means Young can also escape with a reprimand and 93.75 points added to his future record.

In other tribunal news, the match-day report against Melbourne ruckman Paul Johnson for striking Hawthorn skipper Sam Mitchell was thrown out with the panel ruling contact in the incident was minimal.

Port pummel Swans

February 22nd 2009 08:50
SYDNEY remains winless in the NAB Cup during Paul Roos’ reign after the Swans were thumped to the tune of 65 points by Port Adelaide at Manuka Oval on Sunday.

The Power effectively put the result beyond doubt in a dominant second term, slamming on seven unanswered goals, including two nine-pointers to set up their convincing 4.16.11 (143) to 1.10.9 (78) victory.

Some of the gloss was taken off the win with Port star Daniel Motlop reported for charging Sydney youngster Jesse White in the first quarter.

The Swans are now zero from seven attempts in the pre-season competition since Roos took over as coach.

New Port skipper Domenic Cassisi led from the front with 19 disposals and one goal. He received good support in the middle of the ground from Kane Cornes, Tom Logan and Nathan Krakouer.

Justin Westhoff (four goals) was the chief beneficiary of Port’s dominance in the midfield while former skipper Warren Tredrea and exciting young rookie Wade Thomson chimed in with three majors apiece.

For the Swans, reigning best-and-fairest winner Jarred McVeigh looks set for another big season after booting four goals while Ryan O’Keefe, Brett Kirk, Adam Goodes and Craig Bird tried hard all day.

Sydney started brightly with Craig Bolton booting a super goal before elevated rookie Matt O'Dwyer slotted home a major to give the Swans a handy early buffer.

But the rest of the term belonged to the Power as they slammed on four unanswered goals - the first of which was a super goal from Danyle Pearce - to take an 11-point lead into quarter-time.

The Swans regained the lead early in the second term thanks to majors from McVeigh and Goodes.

But their joy was short-lived with the Power taking control of the midfield as they slammed on seven unanswered goals, including nine-pointers to Danny Meyer and Tom Logan to take a match-winning 48-point lead into the main break.

The margin blew out to 60 points late in the third term before goals from McVeigh, O’Keefe and Darren Jolly gave the Swans a glimmer of hope with the Power holding a 36-point lead.

But Sydney’s momentum was halted by Port ruckman Brendon Lade who slotted home a super goal in the dying stages to give his side a commanding 46-point lead heading into the final change.

The Swans kicked the first two goals of the final term but it was all one-way traffic from thereon in with the Power piling on the last five goals of the match to record the biggest win of the NAB Cup so far.

The Power will now face Geelong in the NAB Cup quarter-finals at Skilled Stadium on Saturday.

Cats too good for Crows

February 21st 2009 12:11
GARY Ablett has inspired Geelong to a 35-point win over Adelaide in the first round of the NAB Cup at Telstra Dome on Saturday night.

Ablett, who finished the match with four majors, booted three goals - one of them a super goal - in a stunning three-minute burst deep into time-on in the opening term to help set up the Cats’ comfortable 1.17.8 (119) to 2.9.12 (84) victory.

The loss was made worse for Adelaide with promising young forward Taylor Walker appearing to turn an ankle midway through the second term. The 18-year-old took no further part in the match.

Geelong dominated the midfield - they racked up 408 possessions - 245 of which were handballs - which is understood be a record for an AFL match.

James Bartel led the way with a game-high 30 disposals. He received good support from Joel Corey who racked up 29 possessions while Mathew Stokes was damaging with 29 touches and three goals.

Ryan Gamble stepped up in the absence of Cameron Mooney, booting four goals while Tom Lonergan chimed in with three majors.

For the Crows, skipper Simon Goodwin led from the front with 29 disposals while Scott Stevens and Tyson Edwards each kicked two goals.

In some good news for Adelaide, forward Trent Hentschel got through his first match since suffering a severe knee injury in round 21, 2006 unscathed.

The 26-year-old kicked a goal early in the third term and will undoubtedly be better for the run.

The Crows were right in the contest before Ablett came off the bench and had an immediate impact.

First he worked his opponent Aaron Kite under the ball and took a bounce before slotting home a super goal from 55m.

Then two minutes later he crumbed the pack and snapped truly before kicking his third to give his side a 25-point lead at the first change.

Ablett continued to exert his dominance in the second term, kicking the first of Geelong’s six-second term goals.

The Crows trailed by 35 points at the main break but got themselves back into the contest with early goals from Edwards and Hentschel.

But Geelong quickly put the match beyond Adelaide’s reach, slamming on four unanswered goals to take a match-winning 47-point lead into the final change.

The Cats will now face the winner of Sunday’s clash between the Sydney Swans and Port Adelaide.

HAWTHORN has booked a quarter-final showdown with Carlton at Telstra Dome next Sunday with a thrilling three-point win over Melbourne at Aurora Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The reigning premiers trailed by 33 points heading into the final change and looked set for a first-round exit but they lifted in the last quarter, slamming on six unanswered goals to prevail 0.11.3 (69) to 1.8.9 (66).

The win was soured somewhat for the Hawks with Clinton Young reported for charging Aaron Davey in the first term while Michael Osborne and Chance Bateman suffered foot and ankle injuries respectively in the first half.

The Demons have their own injury concerns with skipper James McDonald limping off the field in the second term while exciting young forward Austin Wonaeamirri suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter.

Jarryd Roughead was the chief destroyer with five goals, including the game-winner with just three seconds left on the clock while skipper Sam Mitchell was influential with 28 disposals.

For Melbourne, Brock McLean led from the front with 25 disposals. Brad Miller was lively across half-forward with 11 marks and one goal while Matthew Bate booted four majors.

The Demons looked much sharper than the Hawks from the opening bounce but they were unable to translate their good work around the ground into a sizeable lead with their poor kicking in front of goal letting them down.

Hawthorn trailed by just five points at the first change thanks to Roughead who booted three goals for the term.

The margin stayed the same at half-time with both sides struggling to find an avenue to goal - the first major of the second term wasn’t kicked until the 17-minute mark.

Melbourne broke the game open in the third term, slamming on four unanswered goals - the last of those was a super goal from Clint Bartram to give the Demons what appeared to be a match-winning 33-point lead heading into the final stanza.

But the Hawks refused to give in with their class coming to the fore in a dominant final quarter.

Pratt will be fit for round one

February 21st 2009 02:26
NORTH MELBOURNE defender Daniel Pratt will be fit for the start of the home-and-away season after it was discovered that the rib injury he suffered during the Roos' 53-point loss to Carlton in the first round of the NAB Cup on Friday night was less serious than first thought.

Pratt backed into the path of Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola in a marking contest and copped a knee to the ribs and was immediately taken from the field in agony.

The Kangaroos initially feared that Pratt, who was released from hospital late on Friday night, had suffered broken ribs and internal bleeding but football operations manager Donald McDonald said on Saturday morning that the 25-year-old just had bruised ribs.

"He copped the full brunt of a rampaging Fev (Brendan Fevola), courageously getting back in the hole," McDonald said.

"Our doctor is an experienced campaigner. Daniel was in a lot of pain when he came off the field, but we sent him off to hospital just as a precaution to make sure there was no bleeding on the lungs."

"He might miss a week or two, but no more, he'll be right for round one, and that's great news for North supporters."

Blues outclass Roos

February 20th 2009 12:47
CARLTON has booked its place in the second round of the NAB Cup with a convincing 53-point win over North Melbourne at Telstra Dome on Friday night.

The Blues, who are expected to make the top eight this season, were simply unstoppable as they cruised to a 1.17.12 (123) to 0.11.4 (70) victory.

The win was soured somewhat with promising youngster Chris Yarran, taken with the No.6 pick in last November's national draft, suffering an ankle injury in the first quarter.

For the Kangaroos, the loss was made worse with defender Daniel Pratt going off in agony in the third term with what appeared to a serious rib injury after being collected hard by Carlton spearhead Brendon Fevola in a marking contest

Fevola, who booted 99 goals last season, looks set for another big year after kicking six majors while skipper Chris Judd was damaging early.

Bryce Gibbs was influential with 27 disposals while youngster Mitch Robinson (17 disposals) showed plenty of promise.

For North, Daniel Wells showed his class with 23 disposals and two goals.

Debutant Jack Ziebell impressed with 12 possessions and two majors while much-improved key forward David Hale kicked three first-half goals.

Fevola started brightly, kicking the first goal of the match at the three-minute mark before slotting home a super goal just minutes later.

The Blues looked set to go into the first change with a sizeable lead when Judd kicked truly at the 16-minute to give his side an 18-point lead but a late major from Lindsay Thomas ensured the Kangaroos would go into the first change just 11 points behind.

Carlton came out firing in the second term, slamming on three unanswered goals to skip out to a 30-point lead.

Hale stopped the rot with his second at the 12-minute back but North's joy was short-lived with Cameron Cloke kicking truly.

The Kangaroos responded with majors from Hale and Ed Lower but the Blues had all the answers with Fevola’s fourth and a Simon Wiggins major from an acute angle giving Carlton a five-goal lead heading into the main break.

The Blues broke the game open in the third term, slamming on six goals to two to take a match-winning 58-point lead into the final change.

The margin blew out to 70 points early in the final term but the Roos hit back with four goals, including two from Ziebell to add some respectability to the scoreboard.

Carlton will now play the winner from Saturday's Hawthorn-Melbourne clash next Sunday at Telstra Dome

Maxwell free to play

February 20th 2009 02:11
THE AFL Appeals Board has overturned the tribunal's earlier ruling that Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell should be suspended for four matches for his bump on West Coast youngster Patrick McGinnity.

The incident left McGinnity with a broken jaw that will keep him sidelined for between eight and 12 weeks.

Maxwell, who is the first player to have an appeal upheld since the tribunal system was overhauled in 2005, wished McGinnity all the best in his recovery.

"I'm happy that's been vindicated (and) I want to wish Patrick McGinnity all the best," Maxwell said.

"I haven't spoken to him yet obviously because of what's happened over the past two weeks, but I wish him all the best in his recovery and hope he has a long and distinguished career."

The Appeals Board said it will be publish the reasons for its verdict in due course.

Franklin to miss

February 19th 2009 06:06
HAWTHORN star Lance Franklin will miss the reigning premier's first NAB Cup match against Melbourne in Tasmania on Saturday with a thumb injury.

But the Hawks say Franklin, who sustained the injury at training this week, is expected to make his first appearance of 2009 as early as the second round of the pre-season competiton.

Hawthorn club spokesman Clinton Bown said on Thursday that Franklin was set to play against the Demons until his mishap at training.

"He jarred his thumb in a marking drill," Bown said.

"But he had a scan and everything is fine and we were only likely to play him in two games over the pre-season anyway so we are looking at potentially next week (for Franklin to return)."

Maxwell to appeal

February 18th 2009 05:03
COLLINGWOOD will appeal the AFL Tribunal's decision to uphold the four-match suspension given to skipper Nick Maxwell.

Maxwell, who was hit with a level three rough conduct charge by the match review panel for his bump on West Coast youngster Patrick McGinnity in the opening NAB Cup match at Subiaco Oval, may miss up to the first three weeks of the home-and-away season dependant on how far the Magpies progress in the pre-season competiton.

The Magpies said in a statement on Wednesday that the tribunal's decision was 'unreasonable'.

"The club is appealing the decision on the basis that 'the decision was so unreasonable that no tribunal acting reasonably could’ve come to that decision having regard to the evidence before it."

The Appeals Board will hear the case on Friday morning.

McGinnity, who was left with a broken jaw from the incident is set to miss eight to 12 weeks.

Maxwell to miss four

February 17th 2009 08:20
COLLINGWOOD skipper Nick Maxwell will miss at least the first match of the home-and-away season and possibly more depending on how the Magpies perform in the NAB Cup after having his appeal against his four-match suspension thrown out.

Maxwell was initially hit wit a level three rough conduct charge following an incident in which West Coast youngster Patrick McGinnity was left with a broken jaw.

The Magpies produced medical evidence to show that the contact which caused the injury was from an accidental head clash but the tribunal did not accept the explanation and the original penalty stood.

Blues lift ban

February 17th 2009 06:04
CARLTON has lifted its suspension on defender Setanta O'hAilpin following his attack on teammate Cameron Cloke during an intra-club match at Visy Park on February 6.

The decision to allow O'hAilpin, who struck Cloke before kicking kicking the former Magpie while on the ground, back into the senior squad was made after after further talks with the coaching staff, senior players and a clearance from the club's sports psychologist.

O'hAilpin addressed his teammates prior to a training session on Tuesday and will continue to receive counselling from the club's psychologist.

The 25-year-old, who still has an AFL-imposed four-match ban to serve will be available for the first round of the home-and-away season if the Blues make the NAB Cup Grand Final.

McGrath free to play

February 16th 2009 06:50
BRISBANE small forward Ashley McGrath is free to play in the Lions' NAB Cup quarter-final clash against Essendon at Telstra Dome on February 27 after escaping with a reprimand for his front-on bump on St Kilda's Brendon Goddard.

The match review panel assessed the incident as negligent conduct, low impact and high contact, which equates to 125 points or a one-match suspension.

But this falls to 70.31 points and a reprimand because of his previous clean record over the past five years.

In other tribunal news, St Kilda's Jarryn Geary was cleared over an incident involving Brisbane's Travis Johnstone due to a lack of video evidence while Fremantle defender Antoni Grover was found to have made a legitimate attempt to spoil when he made contact to the face of Richmond's Dean Polo in a marking contest during Sunday night's NAB Cup match at Subiaco Oval.

Meanwhile the AFL has given the field umpire involved in the collision with St Kilda's Robert Eddy the all-clear.

The league said the clash between rookie field umpire Ben Ryan and Eddy - which left Eddy facing a month on the sidelines with a knee injury - was accidental.

Richardson inspired Tigers win thriller

February 15th 2009 13:52
RICHMOND veteran Matthew Richardson has inspired his side to a thrilling three-point win over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Sunday night.

The Tigers led by 16 points in the final term but the Dockers lifted and snatched back the lead thanks to a goal from Kepler Bradley and super goals from Stephen Hill and Garrick Ibbotosn.

With his side trailing by nine points, Richardson took it upon himself to win the game, grubbering one home before kicking the sealer with 52 seconds remaining.

The 34-year-old then ran deep into defence and took a match-saving mark 15m from the Fremantle goal with just 29 seconds left.

Richardson finished the match with 25 possessions, two goals and a super goal.

Nathan Foley was influential with 33 disposals while Mitch Morton and Nathan Brown booted three goals apiece.

For the Dockers, last year’s NAB Rising Star winner Rhys Palmer racked up 21 disposals while Hill showed he is a star of the future with 13 touches, eight tackles and a super goal.

The Dockers came out firing and skipped out to a 28-point lead at the 14-minute mark thanks to super goals from Dean Solomon and Andrew Browne and majors from Antoni Grover and Matt DeBoer.

Richardson kept his side in the contest in the opening term, racking up nine possessions and booting a super goal.

The Tigers trailed by 18 points at quarter-time but they could have been even closer had they made the most of their chances.

Richmond missed their first four shots at goals before Jack Riewoldt kicked truly at the 16-minute mark.

Two goals from Brown saw the Tigers close to within eight points midway through the second term but the Dockers had all the answers with Byron Schammer kicking a super goal after Jay Schulz gave away a free kick and a 50m penalty.

A late goal to Steven Dodd gave the Dockers a 22-point advantage heading into the main break.

Richardson was everywhere in the third term as the Tigers slammed on four goals in a stunning nine minute burst to level the scores.

Fremantle stemmed the tide for the next 10 minutes but a late goal to Morton gave the Tigers a four-point lead heading into the final change.

When Cleve Hughes goaled at the nine-minute mark of the final stanza the margin was out to 16 points and it appeared as if the Tigers were on their way to victory.

But the Dockers refused to give in and hit back through Bradley, Hill and Ibbotson to skip out to a nine-point lead at the 18-minute mark before some late heroics from Richardson sealed a gutsy win for the Tigers.

Richmond will now face Collingwood in a quarter-final in a fortnight’s time.

Lions hold off Saints

February 14th 2009 13:48
BRISBANE has celebrated Michael Voss’ first game as coach with a nine-point win over St Kilda at Gold Coast Stadium on Saturday night.

The Lions led by more than seven goals before withstanding a second half fight-back from the Saints to prevail 1.8.8 (65) to 0.8.8 (56).

Scott Harding stepped up in the absence of star forwards Daniel Bradshaw and Jonathan Brown, booting three goals while Travis Johnstone and Jared Brennan were influential with 27 and 21 disposals respectively.

Josh Drummond was damaging with 16 disposals and a super goal while youngster Daniel Rich showed some promising signs during his limited time on the ground.

For the Saints, Brendon Goddard starred with 30 possessions and two goals. Youngster Jarryn Geary was a busy contributor with 25 touches and a goal while former Bulldog Farren Ray impressed in his first game for the club with 24 disposals.

St Kilda started brightly, booting the first goal of the match through promising Ben McEvoy.

Their forward line, which was missing Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke, failed to fire a shot for the rest of the first half as the Lions slammed on the next eight goals, including a super goal to skip out to a seemingly insurmountable 46-point advantage early in the third term.

But the Saints refused to give in and closed to within 26 points heading into the final change thanks to Goddard, who booted two of his sides four goals for the quarter.

St Kilda looked set to run over the top of the Lions with two quick goals from Stephen Milne and a major from Raphael Clarke reducing the margin to just nine points at the 22-minute mark.

The Saints would have been within a goal a minute later but key defender Matt Maguire dropped a relatively easy mark 25 metres out directly in front.

It proved to be a costly mistake with the Lions holding firm in the dying stages.

Brisbane will now face Essendon in the NAB Cup quarter-finals in a fortnight’s time.

Rivers injures ankle

February 14th 2009 09:58
MELBOURNE defender Jared Rivers is in doubt for the start of the Demons' NAB Cup campaign against Hawthorn in Tasmania next Saturday after injuring his ankle in the club's intra-club match on Saturday.

Rivers, who has played just nine games in the past two years after batting osteitis pubis in 2007 and then being hampered by more groin problems as well as a hip complaint last year, left the field in the first quarter and did not return.

Melbourne coach Dean Bailey said Rivers' latest injury was not serious.

"He just twisted his ankle, so he'll be OK. He'll be fine with some ice in the next 24 hours. In Jared's words it was ‘bleep, bleep, bleep ankle’ … He was really looking forward to playing today," he said after the match.

"He's worked incredibly hard over the last six months. Today if he was able to get through the game, he would've got some confidence from it..

"It was really disappointing he was able to only play five or seven minutes but it's five or seven minutes that he didn't have last year (during the pre-season) so we're progressing with him."

Dons win thriller

February 13th 2009 13:23
ESSENDON has progressed to the second round of the NAB Cup with a thrilling one-point win over the Western Bulldogs in the Bushfire Appeal game at Telstra Dome on Friday night.

The game looked set for extra time before utility Adam McPhee snapped a behind with 18 seconds remaining to give the Bombers a 1.8.13 (70) to 1.8.12 (69) win.

The AFL's decision to transfer the game from Darwin to Telstra Dome to raise funds for the bushfire victims paid handsome dividends with more than $1 million being raised at the game.

Essendon was well served by Andrew Lovett who was a busy contributor in the middle with 22 disposals while former Adelaide Crow Hayden Skipworth booted two valuable goals.

Jay Neagle was lively up forward and kicked two goals while Scott Gumbleton, who has struggled to get on the park since being taken with pick two in the 2006 national draft, showed some promising signs.

For the Bulldogs, skipper Brad Johnson led from the front with four goals while promising young forward Jarrad Grant looked dangerous but failed to capitalise in front of goal.

Shaun Higgins, who missed nearly all of last season with a broken ankle, looks set for a big year after racking up 22 quality disposals while Dale Morris did a superb blanketing job on Essendon skipper Matthew Lloyd.

Scores were level at half-time but the Bulldogs could have easily been in front had they kicked straighter - they booted a wasteful 2.5 in the second quarter.

Neagle kicked the first goal of the second half to give the Bombers the lead but the Bulldogs hit back with majors from Brennan Stack and Wayde Skipper to take a three-point lead.

But all their good work was undone when Paul O’Shea gave away a 50m penalty after cannoning into Jarrod Atkinson as the young Bomber took a mark in the middle of the ground.

Atkinson made the Dogs pay the ultimate price, slotting home a super goal before Skipworth kicked truly on the siren to give the Dons a handy 11-point lead heading into the final change.

The Bombers looked set to record an easy win when Skipworth kicked a clever check-side goal two minutes into the final term to give his side a 17-point advantage.

But the Bulldogs refused to give in and hit back through Johnson who booted two goals in three minutes before veteran Nathan Eagleton slotted one home to put the Dogs up by one point.

A Lloyd poster levelled scores with 65 seconds remaining before McPhee made up for a miss in front of goal minutes earlier with the match-winning point.

Essendon will now play the winner of Saturday night's NAB Cup game between Brisbane and St Kilda.

Goodes named co-captain

February 13th 2009 01:51
SYDNEY star Adam Goodes has replaced key defender Leo Barry as co-captain of the club.

The dual Brownlow medallist joins Brett Kirk and Craig Bolton at the helm for season 2009.

Sydney coach Paul Roos said Goodes deserved the honour.

"One of the main goals for players as they move on in their careers is to lead at their club," Roos said.

"He narrowly missed out last year when Craig took over from Barry Hall but now Goodesy has this opportunity and is a very suitable and worthy replacement for Leo Barry, who did a terrific job for the footy club."

"We are very confident Adam will carry on in the fine tradition of some of the past great captains, and will ultimately leave his own legacy at the football club."

Despite being a part of the club's leadership group for the past six years, Goodes believes he still needs to work on his leadership.

"It's great that I have got other leaders here at the football club to help me through those things with Kirky and Craig above me now and also Hally (Barry Hall) and Stewie Maxfield still at the club that can really help me with my on-field leadership," he said.

"Just the on-field stuff, being more vocal."

"Making sure that if I'm not playing the best of football, that I'm still getting my team-mates up, still being a voice and body language out of the field, those sorts of things.''

RICHMOND midfielder Mark Coughlan could still be available for the start of the home-and-away season in late March despite requiring further surgery on the right knee which required two full reconstructions in 2006 and 2007.

The 26-year-old suffered his first major knee injury in his last AFL match in round 12, 2006.

The 2003 best-and-fairest winner then underwent a second knee re-construction on the same knee after breaking down again during the 2007 pre-season while last year he battled ongoing hamstring problems

Coughlan, who has played 41 games in five seasons, impressed in an intra-club match last week and was on the verge of returning to the Richmond side in this weekend's NAB Cup clash against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval.

Richmond assistant coach Wayne Campbell said the surgery was only a 'minor setback' for Coughlan.

"It's a small meniscus tear in the (right) knee he has had re-constructed a couple of times," Campbell said.

"It sounds worse than what it is and hopefully he will be back in training in a couple of weeks."

"Mark Coughlan and knee (surgery) doesn't sound great but we think it's only a minor setback for him."

"After two knee re-constructions he has been through enough hell in the past and while this is not ideal for him it's certainly not catastrophic by any means."

Campbell also said Coughlan is still a chance to be ready for the round one clash against Carlton on March 26.

"If all went well he could play in the third week of the NAB Cup but whether that happens or not I don't know but round one versus Carlton is not out of the equation."

"He was going unbelievably well before this and the improvement in him since he came back (for the start of pre-season training) on October 17 has been remarkable to the point where it was going to be a fairytale story and we probably think it still will be but this is just a couple of weeks' setback."

Coughlan to miss

February 10th 2009 10:47
RICHMOND midfielder Mark Coughlan will miss Sunday night's round one NAB Cup clash against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval after experiencing soreness in his right knee which required two full reconstructions in 2006 and 2007.

Coughlan, who has not played an AFL match since round 12, 2006, also suffered serious hamstring problems last season which prevented him from returning to the Richmond side.

Maxwell to fight charge

February 10th 2009 01:47
COLLINGWOOD skipper Nick Maxwell will appear at the AFL Tribunal next week after deciding to contest his rough conduct charge against West Coast youngster Patrick McGinnity.

Maxwell's bump, which left McGinnity with a broken jaw, was ruled by the match review panel as negligent conduct, high impact and high contact, which equates to 325 points.

But that was increased to 440.31 points because of a prior indiscretion within the past year and even with an early guilty plea he was looking at three games on the sidelines.

Maxwell's hearing has been delayed until next week because the Magpies will be conducting their pre-season community camp this week on the Mornington Peninsula and don't play their NAB Cup quarter-final until the weekend of February 27-March 1.

Meanwhile, Carlton defender Setanta O'hAilpin has accepted a four-game suspension following his attack on teammate Cameron Cloke in last Friday's intra-club match.

In some good news for O'hAilpin, the ban can at least be partially served during the NAB Cup, depending on how far the Blues go.

NAB Cup match moved to Dome

February 9th 2009 06:59
The AFL has moved Friday night's first-round NAB Cup match between the Western Bulldogs and Essendon from Darwin to Telstra Dome to help raise funds for the victims of Victoria's bushfires.

Essendon football manager Paul Hamilton said the club supported the move.

"While we were looking forward to playing in front of our loyal supporters in Darwin, we are proud to assist in the fund-raising efforts to help thousands of Victorians affected by this horrible disaster," Hamilton said.

"Everyone has been touched by the events of the past few days and we hope this game will help lift people’s spirits and raise money for those who need it most.”

Hamilton also said the Bombers will be collecting donations at their family day at Windy Hill on February 22.

Meanwhile, Richmond has already raised $50,000 for bushfire victims after offering fans the chance to have their photo taken with the team.

O'hAilpin hit with four-match ban

February 9th 2009 06:05
CARLTON defender Setanta O'hAilpin has been hit with a four-match ban by the AFL match review panel for his attack on teammate Cameron Cloke during last Friday's intra-club match at Visy Park.

O'hAilpin, who has been stood down indefintely by the Blues, was charged with a level four striking offence and a level two kicking offence.

The match review panel viewed the strike as intentional conduct, medium impact and high contact, which equates to 325 demerit points.

The kick, which occurred as Cloke was lying on the ground was ruled as being intentional, low impact and body contact resulting in 250 points.

If O'hAilpin pleads guilty to both offences his total points are 431.25 points, which equates to a four-match ban that must be served during the home-and-away season.

Meanwhile, new Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell could miss the start of the home-and-away season after being hit with a three-match ban for engaging in rough conduct during the Magpies' first-round NAB Cup win over West Coast at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

Maxwell's front-on bump on Eagles' youngster Patrick McGinnity was ruled as negligent conduct, high impact and high contact, which equates to 325 points.

But Maxwell's poor record meant his tally rose 440.31 points, so even if he enters a guilty plea he is still facing a three-match ban.

In some good news for Maxwell, the penalty can be served during the NAB Cup because that is the competition in which the incident took place.

So if the Pies make it all the way to the NAB Cup grand final Maxwell will be free to play in the first round of the home-and-away season.

Cassisi named captain

February 9th 2009 01:24
PORT ADELAIDE has appointed midfielder Domenic Cassisi as its new captain.

Cassisi, who replaces Warren Tredrea as skipper, has played 128 games for the club and was part of their premiership team in 2004.

Kane Cornes and Shaun Burgoyne are the vice captains of the side.

Cassisi said being named captain was a 'great honour'.

“I take great honour in being named captain of the Port Adelaide Football Club,” he said.

“The support I have received from Choco, the leadership group, the coaching staff and my teammates has been overwhelming to say the least."

Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams said Cassisi had all the attributes to be an outstanding captain.

"He is a typical Port Adelaide captain – a hard and tough player who leads by example," Williams said.

“Dom has enormous respect within the playing group, and has always shown great interest in the welfare of other players."

Pies too good for Eagles

February 7th 2009 12:56
COLLINGWOOD has booked its place in the second round of the NAB Cup with a convincing 62-point win over West Coast at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

The Magpies fielded an extremely strong side and the gap in class between the two teams was evident as the Pies cruised to an emphatic 1.15.17 (116) to 3.3.9 (54) victory.

Tarkyn Lockyer, Scott Pendlebury and Alan Didak were all influential with 30-plus possessions apiece while Travis Cloke booted four goals.

For West Coast, Mark Nicoski generated plenty of run from defence with 29 disposals while Chris Masten and Daniel Kerr were impressive.

The Eagles started brightly with Brent Staker kicking the first goal of the match at the five-minute mark.

But the rest of the term belonged to the Magpies who took control of the midfield with Ben Johnson and Lockyer particularly damaging with two goals apiece to give their side a 14-point lead at quarter-time.

The Magpies continued to dominate the midfield in the second term with Leon Davis, Pendlebury, Lockyer, Didak and Johnson doing as they pleased.

Collingwood's willingness to run hard and use the corridor paid dividends as they slammed on three goals and a super goal from the boot of Marty Clarke to blow the margin out to 40 points at the main break.

A clever snap from Staker early in the third term reduced the margin to 34 points and gave the Eagles a glimmer of hope.

But the Magpies had all the answers with Cloke booting three for the term to put the result beyond doubt.

Welsh to miss up to four months

February 7th 2009 04:28
ESSENDON utility Andrew Welsh is set to be sidelined for up to four months after undergoing surgery on the leg injuries he suffered in Friday's intra-club match.

The 25-year-old broke the fibula bone in his right leg and dislocated his right ankle during the third quarter of Essendon's intra-club match at Whitten Oval.

Essendon football operations manager Paul Hamilton said the operation was a success and that Welsh was in good spirits.

"Last night the doctors pinned the bone in his leg and also put his ankle back in place," Hamilton said.

"They are happy with the result of the operation but we still expect Andrew to miss three to four months of football."

"Andrew is in very good spirits and has been sending humorous text messages to his team-mates this morning."

"Obviously he will be on crutches for a while but he is already very excited about getting back to the club and having some input. The main thing for him to focus on now is rest."

O'hAilpin suspended

February 6th 2009 05:23
CARLTON defender Setanta O'hAilpin has been suspended indefinitely by the club after attacking teammate Cameron Cloke during the Blues' intra-club practice match on Friday morning.

O'hAilpin hit Cloke and then kicked him in the backside while the former Magpie was laying on the ground.

The 25-year-old was immediately ordered from the field by star forward Brendan Fevola and later sent home to cool off.

Umpires in charge of the game lodged a notice of investigation regarding the incident.

AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said on Friday afternoon that O'hAilpin will go through the normal tribunal process.

"It's rare (for a player to be reported in an intra-club match) but there are previous (tribunal) cases from internal trials," he said.

Carlton chief executive Greg Swann said in a statement that O'hAilpin had shown remorse for his actions.

"Setanta is remorseful about the incident and has spoken with Cameron to apologise for his actions," Swann said.

"He is aware that such an incident is completely unacceptable and in particular is a poor example to junior footballers."

Meanwhile, the Blues also confirmed that midfielder Andrew Carrazzo would miss the remainder of the pre-season after suffering a broken arm during Friday's match.

But Carlton remains hopeful that the 2007 best-and-fairest winner will be fit for the start of the home-and-away season and expect him to resume running in two weeks.

O'hAilpin strikes Cloke

February 6th 2009 02:00
CARLTON defender Setanta O'hAilpin was banished from the field after striking and and kicking teammate Cameron Cloke in a heated intra-club match at Visy Park on Friday morning.

The incident took place late in the third quarter when O'hAilpin and Cloke were grappling over a loose ball.

When his arms were freed, O'hAilpin landed a right then left on Cloke's temple, and when Cloke went to ground, O'hAilpin stood over him and kicked him once to the lower back.

Star forward Brendon Fevola ordered O'hAilpin from the field while Cloke left the field for treatment.

Cloke returned to the field for a shortened final term.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten said O'hAilpin, who was told to go pack his bags and go home and cool off, will meet with the club hierachy later in the afternoon to discuss the incident.

"We'll sit down and talk about all the issues and what goes from here, but it's not a part of our game," he said.

Ratten also said the club will deal with the incident internally.

"He'll come under a Carlton Football Club sanction or review so we'll deal with it," he said.

"This is a matter between the two players."

Meanwhile, midfielder Andrew Carrazzo left the field in the second quarter with a potentially serious arm injury.

Ratten said Carrazzo will undergo scans to determine the seriousness of the injury.

"Andrew just hurt his forearm - whether it's muscle or so forth the doc is just going through that - so we'll get that assessed today or tomorrow," Ratten said.

"Hopefully it’s just a one-to-two week injury."

Tigers sign new sponsor

February 5th 2009 04:23
RICHMOND has strengthened its off-field position with the signing of a new co-major sponsor to join Dick Smith Electronics.

Luxbet, a corporate betting agency, has signed a deal with the Tigers believed to be worth around $1 million.

As part of the deal the Luxbet logo will appear on the back of the Richmond jumper this season while the Dick Smith Logo will appear on the front.

The deal comes after the Tigers lost their previous sponsor AFG due to the current financial crisis

Meanwhile, the signing of former West Coast captain Ben Cousins is already paying dividends with the club having signed more than 22,000 season ticket holders - a 25 per cent increase on this time last year.

Cousins impresses

February 5th 2009 04:04
BEN Cousins will not play in Richmond's first round NAB Cup match against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval next week despite performing well in the club's intra-club match at Gosch's Park on Thursday, according to assistant coach Brian Royal.

Cousins did not appear to be lacking match fitness despite being out of the game for such a long period but Royal said the former West Coast captain won't be risked against the Dockers.

"Our plan all along has been around Ben playing Round 1 against Carlton," he said.

"He definitely won't be playing Round 1 of the NAB Cup because today is the most he has done from a footy point of view and certainly the physicality of the game and the intensity, especially in these (hot) conditions, is something he hasn’t been able to cope with in the last couple of months so we will need to see how he pulls up."

Meanwhile, utility Graham Polak performed better than expected in his first match following the tram accident that almost killed him last June.

Royal said the fact that that Polak was able to play just seven months after his accident that left him with severe head injuries was a promising sign but also admitted that the 24-year-old still has a long way to go.

"Today was a really important step in Graham's rehabilitation and Graham is slowly increasing the amount of training he is doing and also the intensity he is training at," Royal said.

"But he has still got a long way to because he gets very tired easily the longer the game and quarters go, so we are not expecting anything from him certainly in the first part of the season.

Magpie accused of assault

February 4th 2009 06:55
COLLINGWOOD will not be taking disciplinary action against utility Ryan Cook over his involvement in a fight.

The Magpies said Cook had advised them that he had been in a fight which left a man with facial injuries.

It's understood that the 20-year-old was leaving teammate Scott Pendlebury's 21st birthday party when he got into a fight with two men.

Collingwood said in a statement that Cook will co-operate fully with the police.

"Through the club’s investigation it appears that Ryan acted entirely in self defence and the club will not be taking any disciplinary action against the player," the club statement said.

"The club will be in regular contact with police as they conduct their investigation and will be advised of any new developments."

ST KILDA captain Nick Riewoldt will miss the NAB Cup after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

St Kilda football manager Greg Hutchison said the club expected Riewoldt to be ready for the start of the home-and-away season.

"This week during training Nick was experiencing some discomfort in his left knee, the Club and Nick decided the best option was to operate quickly and ensure he is in peak condition for this year," he said

"He is expected to complete a full recovery program with our strength and conditioning team throughout the next month and be on track for the start of home and away season."
