AFL Central - April 2010

Saints edge out Dogs

April 30th 2010 12:39

ST KILDA has recorded a gutsy three-point win over the Western Bulldogs in a dour affair at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

Trailing by 17 points at three-quarter time, the Saints looked set to suffer their second successive loss after going down to Port Adelaide last weekend but they kicked three unanswered goals in the final term to prevail 7.7 (49) to 6.10 (46).

It was St Kilda’s fifth win of the season while the Bulldogs now have a 3-3 record.

Acting captain Lenny Hayes led from the front with 35 possessions while Leigh Montagna (34) was also superb.

Stephen Milne and David Armitage booted two goals apiece while Sam Fisher kept Barry Hall to just one goal and kicked one of his own.

For the Dogs, Lindsay Gilbee and Adam Cooney racked up 36 disposals each while Jarrod Harbrow generated plenty of run from defence with 34 touches.

The Bulldogs kicked the first goal of the match after just two minutes of action with Daniel Giansiracusa snapping truly but only a further two majors were booted in a first term in which the defensive pressure applied by both sides was superb.

The last of those two goals was a long-range bomb from Ryan Griffen in the final minute of the quarter which put the Dogs six points in front at the first change.

St Kilda managed the first goal of the second term before the Bulldogs took control of general play.

However they were unable to translate their dominance onto the scoreboard, booting a wasteful 1.5 to go into the main break with a 10-point advantage.

A 50m penalty against Tom Williams for running over the mark resulted in Milne kicking the first goal of third quarter before the Bulldogs banged on goals through Shaun Higgins, Jordan Roughead and Hall to blow the margin out to 23 points at the 18-minute mark.

Armitage converted two minutes later but the Dogs went into the final change with a handy buffer.

Leading by 15 points 18 minutes into the final stanza, the Bulldogs appeared to be on course for their first win over a top-eight side in 2010.

But a fumble by Williams in the middle of the ground led to a goal to Milne before Armitage booted a soccer-style goal shortly after to cut the deficit to less than one straight kick.

When Fisher snapped a goal from 35m out the Saints were in front by three points with just under three minutes left on the clock.

The Saints then held firm in the dying stages to record the most unlikeliest of victories.

VENUE and TIME: Etihad Stadium, Friday April 30, 7.40pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 147, St Kilda 74, Bulldogs 70, Draw 3

LAST TIME: St Kilda 9.6 (60) def Western Bulldogs 7.11 (53), 1st preliminary final 2009 at the MCG

RECENT HISTORY: St Kilda won all three matches against the Western Bulldogs in 2009.

FORM: The Bulldogs bounced back from a disappointing loss to Brisbane with a comfortable 49-point win over Adelaide at Etihad Stadium last Friday night to improve their win-loss record to 3-2. The Saints suffered their first loss of the season when they went down to Port Adelaide in a low-scoring affair at AAMI Stadium last Saturday night.

MEDICAL ROOM: The Dogs welcome back defender Ryan Hargrave from a neck injury but will be without promising midfielder Brodie Moles (ankle). Key on-baller Matthew Boyd - who missed the clash against the Crows after undergoing hand surgery - could be a late inclusion after being named as an emergency but tagger Liam Picken (ankle) and Callan Ward (groin) will be out for another month. For St Kilda, Farren Ray returns from an ankle injury but skipper Nick Riewoldt (hamstring) is eleven to thirteen weeks away from resuming.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Zac Dawson vs. Barry Hall

Hall will head into this match with plenty of confidence given that he booted seven goals against the Saints in the NAB Cup grand final to help the Dogs secure their first piece of silverware in 40 years.

Dawson - who matched up on the former Sydney premiership captain that night - has been backed by coach Ross Lyon to do the job on Hall who has kicked 19 goals in the opening five rounds of the home-and-away season.

Instrumental to St Kilda’s success last season was their ability to win the contested football and suffocate the opposition with their tackling pressure.

The Saints will need to be at the top of their game in both the aforementioned areas otherwise Hall - who is virtually unstoppable on the lead - will receive ample quality supply from his star-studded on-ball division to kick yet another bag on Dawson.

Brian Lake vs. Justin Koschitzke

Koschitzke struggled in his return from a three-game suspension, failing to kick a goal against the Power.

The Saints will need him to have an impact if they are going to have any hope of maintaining their recent dominance over the Bulldogs.

However, Koschitzke’s task won’t be an easy one as he will be matched up Lake who held him goalless in the NAB Cup grand final.

It is vital for St Kilda that Koschitzke gets his hands on the football and converts early as he is very much a confidence player.

Clinton Jones vs. Adam Cooney

Cooney is an integral part of the Bulldogs’ midfield with his ability to break the lines and use the football cleanly.

The 24-year-old is ranked seventh in the AFL for long kicks and second for inside 50’s.

Shutting down the drive Cooney provides will be vital for the Saints if they are going to contain the Dogs’ multi-pronged attack.

Jones is regarded as one of the best midfield stoppers in the league and will be given the job of tagging Cooney.

Not only has Jones claimed some major scalps during his 55-game career but he has also shown the ability to win his fair share of the football - he has averaged 24 disposals per game so far in 2010 - and has racked up 30-plus possessions in the past two weeks.

Cooney will need to work hard going both ways.

Dylan Addison vs. Nick Dal Santo

Dal Santo averaged 30 touches in three matches against the Bulldogs last year.

Limiting the influence of the Saints star in the middle will be a key for Rodney Eade’s men if they are going to starve St Kilda’s forwards of quality supply.

Addison has performed admirably in a tagging role in the absence of the injured Picken and will most likely be given the task of trying to quell the influence of Dal Santo.

The young Dog will need to apply relentless pressure all night otherwise Dal Santo will cut the Bulldogs to shreds with his sublime skills.

VERDICT: St Kilda may have had the wood over the Western Bulldogs in recent times but they will be without Riewoldt who was instrumental in all three wins over the Bulldogs in 2009, booting a total of 13 goals. And with Koschitzke struggling for form it is hard to see how last year’s grand finalists will kick enough goals to overcome a Dogs outfit that has the fourth most potent attack in the competition. Bulldogs by 20 points.

Hand injury sidelines Dangerfield

April 28th 2010 02:30

ADELAIDE young gun Patrick Dangerfield will be sidelined for up to a month with a hand injury.

The 20-year-old suffered a fracture to his left hand when he crashed into a goalpost during the Crows' 49-point loss to the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium last Friday night.

But the extent of the injury wasn't known until Dangerfield underwent an MRI scan on Tuesday after initial x-rays over the weekend were inconclusive.

VENUE and TIME: Etihad Stadium, Friday April 23, 7.40pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 32, Western Bulldogs 17, Adelaide 15

LAST TIME: Western Bulldogs 17.16 (118) def Adelaide 12.14 (86), Round 7 2009 at AAMI Stadium

RECENT HISTORY: The honours have been shared in the past four matches between these two sides.

FORM: The Bulldogs led Brisbane by 28 points early in the third term at the Gabba last Saturday night before the Lions took over, slamming on nine of the last 11 goals of the contest to hand the Dogs their second loss of the season. Adelaide’s winless start to the year continued when they were thumped to the tune of 48 points by Carlton at AAMI Stadium.

MEDICAL ROOM: The Dogs will be without key midfielder Matthew Boyd who underwent hand surgery during the week but welcome back skipper Brad Johnson from Achilles soreness and a virus as well as Jason Akermanis who missed the clash against his old side due to a hamstring strain. Tagger Liam Picken will be sidelined for five to six weeks with an ankle injury, Callan Ward (groin) is five weeks away from being considered for selection while Tim Callan (knee) is sidelined indefinitely. For the Crows, David Mackay (hamstring) will miss but Nathan van Berlo returns from a back-related hamstring injury. Key forward Trent Hentschel (knee) faces a long stint on the sidelines while star defender Nathan Bock (hamstring) is one to two weeks away from resuming. Brad Symes, Brodie Martin and Brad Moran are all sidelined indefinitely with knee injuries, youngster Rory Sloane (ankle) is unavailable for two to three weeks, James Sellar (hamstring) is a fortnight away while Andy Otten (knee) is out for the year.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Brent Reilly vs. Adam Cooney

The last time these two sides met in round seven last year Cooney was among the Bulldogs’ best with 29 possessions.

Cooney is damaging with his ability to break the lines and deliver the football cleanly inside 50.

Shutting down the drive the 2008 Brownlow medallist provides will be a key for the Crows if they are going to contain a Dogs’ side that is capable of scoring heavily.

Reilly - who is trying to reinvent himself as a tagger this season - will line-up on Cooney in what will be a pivotal duel.

It is vital for Adelaide that Reilly is proactive and tries to hurt Cooney going the other way as it will force the Bulldogs star to worry about his opponent which in turn will help limit his impact on the contest as a creative midfielder.

Dylan Addison vs. Bernie Vince

Vince has been the Crows’ most prolific ball-winner in 2010, averaging 26 disposals per game.

The reigning best-and-fairest winner also leads Adelaide for total disposals, first possessions, uncontested possessions and kicks.

Limiting his influence in the middle will go a long way towards starving Adelaide’s forwards of quality supply.

Addison - who kept Brisbane young gun Justin Sherman to 18 touches last weekend - will be given the task of running with Vince.

The Dogs will need Addison to apply plenty of body pressure on Vince otherwise he will be influential with his clean skills.

Ben Rutten vs. Barry Hall

The last time Hall played against the Crows was in round 13 last year - that match was his last for Sydney with the 32-year-old calling it quits after being given a two-match suspension for striking Rutten.

The former Swans premiership skipper will be keen to make his re-match against Rutten memorable for all the right reasons.

Adelaide is ranked last in the AFL for tackles per game with an average of 52.

Neil Craig’s men will need to lift their intensity considerably otherwise the Bulldogs’ classy on-ball division will provide Hall with silver service all night.

Dale Morris vs. Jason Porplyzia

Like a lot of his teammates, Porplyzia has struggled so far this year having failed to kick a goal in three games.

If the Crows are going to have any hope of kicking a winning score they will need the 25-year-old to have a meaningful impact on the scoreboard.

However, Porplzyia’s task won’t be an easy one as he will be matched up by Morris who is one of the most reliable defenders in the AFL.

In last weekend’s loss to the Blues 198 of the Crows’ 359 possessions were handballs.

Adelaide will need to be a lot more direct with their use of the football otherwise Porplyzia will struggle to get enough quality ball to have any chance of winning his duel with Morris.

VERDICT: The Western Bulldogs may not be at their best but they should record a relatively comfortable win on Friday night as Adelaide’s defence has been decidedly shaky so far in 2010 while their attack is the least productive in the competition.Bulldogs by 37 points.

Ballantyne signs new deal with Freo

April 20th 2010 11:51

FREMANTLE goalsneak Hayden Ballantyne has signed a new two-year deal with the Dockers which ties him to the club until at least the end of the 2012 season.

Taken with pick 21 in the 2008 national draft after winning the Sandover Medal as the best player in the WAFL, Ballantyne has established himself as a key part of Fremantle's forward line.

The 22-year-old has been instrumental in the club's 3-1 start to the season, applying plenty of defensive pressure and showing nous around goal.

Jackson free to play against Dockers

April 20th 2010 09:22

RICHMOND midfielder Daniel Jackson is free to play in Sunday's clash against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval after escaping with a reprimand at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old was risking a one-game ban by challenging a charge of striking Melbourne skipper James McDonald during last Sunday's match at the MCG.

The tribunal found Jackson guilty of striking but downgraded his conduct from reckless to negligent, which resulted in a reprimand and 80 points towards his future record.

The tribunal's verdict meant that 13.75 points had been shaved off what would have been on Jackson's record had he entered an early guilty plea.

Jackson to contest

April 20th 2010 03:31

RICHMOND midfielder Daniel Jackson will risk a one-match ban by contesting a striking charge at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Jackson was charged with striking Melbourne skipper James McDonald during the second quarter of the Demons' 55-point victory at the MCG on Sunday.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct, low impact and high contact, which equated to 125 demerit points and a one-game suspension but Jackson could have escaped with a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early guilty plea.

Geelong star forward Steve Johnson accepted a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record for tripping Port Adelaide's Robbie Gray while St Kilda midfielder Leigh Montagna also accepted a reprimand for tripping Fremantle's Des Headland but due to an existing five-year good record he will only have 45 points hanging over his head.

Meanwhile, Carlton young gun Matthew Kreuzer has accepted a $900 fine for making negligent contact with umpire Jacob Mollison during the third quarter of the Blues' win over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium last Saturday.

Naitanui nabs nomination

April 20th 2010 00:33

WEST COAST ruckman Nic Naitanui has earned the round four nomination for the NAB Rising Star award for his impressive performance against Essendon at Subiaco Oval last Friday night.

The exciting 19-year-old - who is the favourite for the award - was a standout in the Eagles' first win of 2010 with 17 hit-outs and 13 possessions - 10 of which were contested - and five tackles in his 14th senior appearance.

Since making his AFL debut in round 12 last year, Naitanui has become a cult figure in the West, thrilling crowds with his extraordinary athleticism.

"Nic is a very exciting developing player and is certainly capturing the imagination of the public," West Coast coach John Worsfold said.

"He is still learning, but has a great appetite for the game, so he's a great young player to coach."

"We knew when we drafted Nic that he had some special qualities and we are already seeing some of those qualities on display."

From Midvale Junior Football Club, Naitanui was taken by the Eagles with pick two in the 2008 national draft.

Milburn cleared over bump

April 19th 2010 09:08

GEELONG dual premiership player Darren Milburn has been cleared over a bump on Port Adelaide veteran Chad Cornes which left the defender with a broken nose.

The incident occurred in the second quarter of the Cats' 95-point win over the Power at Skilled Stadium on Sunday with Cornes in possession of the ball and Milburn moving towards him committed to applying pressure.

The match review panel said Milburn could not avoid contact after Cornes handballed the football to a teammate and that the Geelong veteran braced himself with primary contact between the duo being made body to body before Milburn's head made incidental contact to Cornes' face.

It was deemed by the panel that the force of the bump was not excessive, Milburn did not use an elbow as part of his bumping action and that Cornes could reasonably expect contact in the passage of play.

Meanwhile, the match-day report laid against Melbourne midfielder Brent Moloney for striking Richmond youngster Ben Nason was thrown out with the MRP ruling that contact was not high.

Essendon's Dustin Fletcher was looked at over contact made to West Coast key forward Josh Kennedy but no further action was taken with the match review panel ruling that Fletcher had made a realistic attempt to gather possession of the ball when contact was made while Hawthorn's Carl Peterson was cleared over a clash with Collingwood youngster Sharrod Wellingham thanks to the same ruling.

Wellingham was cleared over a clash with Hawthorn vice-captain Luke Hodge with the panel deeming that the contact made was not unreasonable in the circumstances.

Western Bulldogs defender Ryan Hargrave escaped punishment over a clash with Brisbane utility Jared Brennan with the MRP ruling that the force of the impact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence while a lack of clear video evidence meant no action was taken against Port Adelaide on-baller Kane Cornes over a clash with Geelong's Corey Enright.

Richmond's Daniel Jackson and classy Cats forward Steve Johnson can accept reprimands for striking Melbourne skipper James McDonald and Power forward Robbie Gray respectively but will be risking one-match suspensions if they elect to contest their charges at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Star St Kilda midfielder Leigh Montagna can also accept a reprimand for tripping Fremantle's Des Headland but unlike Jackson and Johnson he won't be risking a one-game ban if he decides to face the tribunal while Carlton young gun Matthew Kreuzer can accept a $900 fine for making negligent contact with a field umpire with an early guilty plea.

HAWTHORN star recruit Shaun Burgoyne will be sidelined for up to six weeks after suffering a broken jaw while playing for the Box Hill Hawks in the VFL.

The former Port Adelaide midfielder - who left the field with bleeding from the mouth with a loose tooth following a head clash with rugged Geelong utility Max Rooke during the second quarter of Sunday's game - returned to play out the match but underwent scans after the match which revealed a fracture under the tooth.

A specialist confirmed on Monday afternoon that Burgoyne would be sidelined for three to six weeks.

April 18th 2010 10:44

ST KILDA has maintained its undefeated start to the season with a hard-fought 15-point win over Fremantle at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

It was a tight contest for the first three quarters with the Dockers in front by the barest of margins at quarter-time, scores level at the main break and the Saints one point clear at three-quarter time before they banged on the first four goals of the final term to establish a match-winning 25-point advantage, eventually prevailing 16.12 (108) to 14.9 (93).

For Fremantle the result means they now have a 3-1 win-loss record.

Brendon Goddard and Stephen Milne stepped up in the absence of injured skipper Nick Riewoldt and the suspended Justin Koschitzke, booting five goals apiece.

Nick Dal Santo was damaging in the middle with 35 possessions and two majors while Clinton Jones (33), Leigh Montagna (28) and Lenny Hayes (27) were also prolific.

Dockers captain Matthew Pavlich kicked five goals while Paul Duffield provided plenty of drive off half-back with a game-high 36 disposals.

April 18th 2010 08:13

GEELONG has celebrated the unfurling of their 2009 premiership flag with a stunning 95-point win over Port Adelaide at Skilled Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Cats led by just 10 points at half-time but clicked into top gear in the third stanza, slamming on 11.7 to 1.0 to set up a 23.21 (159) to 10.4 (64) victory.

Geelong's third quarter score equalled the third term record they set against West Coast in round two, 1989.

It was also the Cats' 24th consecutive win at home - equalling the VFL/AFL record achieved by Richmond in 1935 and South Melbourne in 1936.

Gary Ablett was best afield with 37 possessions and three goals while Joel Corey (37), Paul Chapman (28, two goals) and James Bartel (26) were also instrumental in the win.

Steve Johnson and mature-age rookie James Podsiadly did the damage up forward with six and five majors respectively while Corey Enright and Harry Taylor provided plenty of rebound out of defence.

Collingwood had 11 individual goal-kickers for the match - Leon Davis and Dale Thomas the most effective with three apiece.

Thomas also collected 26 possessions while Dane Swan (34), Alan Didak (29, two goals), Steele Sidebottom (27) and Scott Pendlebury (27) were also damaging.

Carlton skipper Chris Judd was impressive in his first game for the season after serving a three-match suspension, collecting 30 possessions while Marc Murphy (32) and Kade Simpson (24, two goals) were also influential.

Andrew Walker generated plenty of run from defence with a game-high 36 disposals while Chris Yarran, Jeff Garlett and Ryan Houlihan did the damage up forward with three goals apiece.

Eagles down Dons

April 16th 2010 13:25

WEST COAST has broken through for its first win of 2010, downing Essendon by 23 points at Subiaco Oval on Friday night.

The Eagles kicked nine unanswered goals from late in the first term to early in the third quarter to establish a match-winning 52-point lead before eventually prevailing 15.11 (101) to 11.12 (78).

Some of the gloss was taken off the win for West Coast with star midfielder Daniel Kerr suffering what appeared to be a serious hamstring injury just before half-time.

Dean Cox (19 possessions, 30 hit-outs and one goal) and Nic Naitanui (13 disposals, 17 hit-outs, seven clearances and a goal) were instrumental in the victory while Matt Priddis was influential early, collecting 20 of his 30 possessions in the first half.

Andrew Embley was a busy contributor with 28 disposals while Beau Waters (28) was solid in defence.

Up forward, Mark LeCras kicked four goals while Josh Kennedy chimed in with three majors.

For the Bombers, skipper Jobe Watson led from the front with a game-high 34 touches while David Hille tried hard all night, finishing the match with 21 possessions, nine marks and two goals.

West Coast got off to a dream start with Naitanui winning the first clearance and pumping the football inside 50 before LeCras finished off the exciting 19-year-old's good work with a classy snap.

Essendon was soon on the board through Patrick Ryder but majors from Naitanui and Kennedy saw the Eagles open up an early mini-break.

The Bombers responded with four of the next five majors - two of which came as a direct result of West Coast turnovers - to hit the front before LeCras soccered home his second to give the Eagles a four-point advantage at quarter-time.

As he did in the opening stanza, Naitanui set up the first goal of the second quarter in the opening minute - this time for Brad Ebert.

It was all West Coast from that moment on with a long goal from Matt Rosa followed by majors from Ashley Hansen, Embley, Adam Selwood and LeCras as the Eagles went into the main break with a commanding 39-point advantage.

West Coast's half-time score of 11.8 (74) was the highest by any side so far this season.

Goals from LeCras and Mitch Brown saw the margin blow out to 52 points in the third term before Hille ended a 49-minute goal-scoring drought for Essendon with his first at the nine-minute mark.

The Bombers had the better of general play in the second half of the quarter but were unable to make any inroads on the scoreboard with the Eagles holding a 45-point lead at three-quarter time.

To their credit the Dons finished the match strongly, booting five goals to two in the final stanza to add some respectability to the scoreboard.

VENUE and TIME: Subiaco Oval, Friday April 16, 6:40pm AWST (8.40pm AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 40, West Coast 17, Essendon 23

LAST TIME: West Coast 14.11 (95) d Essendon 10. 8 (68), Round 18, 2009 at Subiaco Oval

RECENT HISTORY: The Eagles have won six of their past eight matches against Essendon.

FORM: West Coast is winless after the first three rounds of the home-and-away season for the first time since 1989 following losses to Brisbane, Port Adelaide and North Melbourne. The Eagles have been in a winning position in all three matches with the average losing margin being just 20 points. The Bombers opened their account in 2010 with a 20-point win over Carlton in a scrappy contest at the MCG last Saturday night.

MEDICAL ROOM: West Coast welcomes back Patrick McGinnity from a quad injury but promising young midfielder Luke Shuey (knee) will miss. Mark Nicoski (shoulder) and Brad Sheppard (cheek) will be sidelined for at least another week while Sam Butler (fractured eye socket) is three weeks away from playing. Tim Houlihan (lacerated foot) won‘t play until the second half of the home-and-away season. For Essendon, key midfielder Brent Stanton will miss the clash with West Coast due to a back injury while veteran Mark McVeigh will make his return from a blood infection via the VFL. Angus Monfries (quad), speedster Leroy Jetta (broken thumb), Tom Bellchambers (mouth), Michael Quinn (quad) and John Williams (ankle) are a week away.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Henry Slattery vs. Mark LeCras

LeCras was West Coast’s most dangerous forward in the 25-point loss to the Kangaroos with five goals.

It is scary to think what the classy 23-year-old could do if the delivery from the midfield was up to scratch.

Slattery - who kept Carlton’s Eddie Betts to just two goals last weekend - will be given first crack at LeCras in what will be a pivotal duel in determining the outcome of this match.

The Bombers defender will need to be switched on defensively for the full four quarters and not give LeCras any time or space in which to work in as he has the uncanny ability to create something out of nothing.

Brett Jones vs. Mark Williams

Williams was instrumental in the Bombers’ win over Carlton with four goals - two of which came in the final term.

That performance will give the former Hawthorn premiership player a great deal of confidence after failing to kick a goal in his first two matches for his new side.

Jones looms as the obvious candidate to match-up on Williams as he has the ability to match him overhead and also go with him when the football hits the deck.

The Eagles are ranked 12th in the AFL for tackles per game with an average of 59.7. They will need to lift their intensity otherwise the Essendon midfielders will be able to continually break the lines and deliver the football lace out to the likes of Williams who is quick off the mark.

Andrew Welsh vs. Daniel Kerr

Kerr was soundly beaten by NAB Rising Star nominee Ryan Bastinac in the first half last Saturday, the 18-year-old keeping the Eagles star to just three possessions.

The 2007 All-Australian midfielder bounced back with 18 disposals in the second half after Bastinac was moved to another opponent.

West Coast will be hoping that the 26-year-old builds on that second half showing on Friday night.

Keeping Kerr - who is one of the most damaging midfielders in the competition when he is on-song - quiet will be a key for the Bombers if they are going to starve the Eagles forward line of quality supply.

Welsh is Essendon’s number one stopper in the midfield and will be given the job of trying to negate Kerr.

It is vital for West Coast that Kerr imposes himself on the contest early otherwise Welsh will dictate terms and dominate.

Adam Selwood vs. Jobe Watson

Watson was one of Essendon’s best against the Blues with 26 possessions -21 of which were contested.

Limiting the influence of the Bombers skipper in the middle will be vital for the Eagles if they are going to shut-down the Dons’ running game.

Like Watson, Selwood is proficient at winning the football at close quarters.

West Coast will need Selwood to be proactive at the stoppages and clean with his use of the football as it will force Watson to worry about his direct opponent which in turn will help limit his impact on the contest as a creative midfielder.

VERDICT: This is a must-win match for John Worsfold’s men if they are serious about playing finals football in 2010. There was no questioning the Eagles’ endeavour last weekend but their skill level was simply atrocious at times. If they can improve their disposal efficiency then Josh Kennedy, Mitch Brown, LeCras and co. should be able to kick enough goals between them to lift West Coast to victory over an Essendon side that has a poor interstate record. Eagles by 21 points.

Franklin to miss Pies clash

April 13th 2010 10:17

HAWTHORN star forward Lance Franklin will miss Saturday night's vital clash against Collingwood at the MCG after failing in his bid to have his one-match suspension overturned at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

The 2008 Coleman Medallist was found guilty of rough conduct for his high bump on Western Bulldogs veteran Jason Akermanis during Sunday's match at Etihad Stadium.

Franklin argued that his contact with Akermanis was unavoidable and that he did everything he could to minimise the impact but after deliberating for 15 minutes the three-man jury upheld the match review panel's decision.

Due to a two-match ban for a similar bump on Richmond midfielder Ben Cousins in round 21 last year, Franklin couldn't have escaped with a reprimand with an early guilty plea.

Meanwhile, North Melbourne's Andrew Swallow will be $2400 lighter in the pocket after unsuccessfully challenging his charge of making negligent contact with umpire Scott McLaren.

Eagles fined by AFL

April 13th 2010 08:36

WEST COAST has been fined $5000 by the AFL for using a mobile phone on the ground during the three-quarter time break of last Saturday's loss to North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

Eagles ruckmen Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui used the phone to speak with the club's ruck coach Simon Eastaugh who had not travelled with the team.

Under section 13 of the AFL Regulations clubs are not permitted to use any form of communications device either during the match or at quarter breaks within the playing arena.

Clubs can be sanctioned up to $25,000 per breach.

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said that in imposing a fine at the lower end of the scale the league had accepted the breach was inadvertent and took into account West Coast's admission and apology.

Ankle injury sidelines Campbell

April 13th 2010 05:41

NORTH MELBOURNE small forward Matt Campbell will be sidelined for up to six weeks with an ankle injury.

Campbell suffered the injury while playing for the Kangaroos' VFL affiliate North Ballarat against Coburg on Sunday.

"A Coburg player fell across my leg so I had his full weight bearing down on it as it rolled," Campbell said.

"It happened at the first centre bounce of the second quarter, I got onto a loose ball going forward and changed direction as that player tackled me."

"We both went to ground and I felt my ankle go numb underneath me. I thought I had just copped a bad knock on it until I tried to put weight on it … that's when it collapsed."

The 22-year-old will spend the next two to three weeks before being able to resume running.

Gibson out for up to 12 weeks

April 13th 2010 02:46

HAWTHORN has suffered a major blow with key defender Josh Gibson ruled out for up to 12 weeks with a hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old sustained the injury in the first quarter of the club's 16-point loss to the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium last Sunday.

Hawks football operations manager Mark Evans said Gibson would undergo surgery on Tuesday evening.

"After consultation last night and this morning with our club medical staff and surgeon, it was determined that a surgical procedure will deliver a better outcome than non-surgical options," Evans said.

Franklin to contest

April 13th 2010 02:41

HAWTHORN star Lance Franklin will face the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night to contest a rough conduct charge.

Franklin is not risking a a bigger sanction by contesting the one-match ban offered for his bump on Western Bulldogs veteran Jason Akermanis.

Due to a poor previous record the 2008 Coleman medallist couldn't have escaped with a reprimand with an early guilty plea.

North's Melbourne's Andrew Swallow will also appear before the tribunal to challenge his charge of making negligent contact with umpire Scott McLaren during the first quarter of the Kangaroos' 25-point win over West Coast at Etihad Stadium last Saturday.

Swallow is facing a $2400 fine for his second offence for making negligent contact with an umpire.

Meanwhile, Brisbane duo Mitch Clark and Ashley McGrath will miss Saturday night's blockbuster clash with the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba after accepting one-match suspensions - Clark for striking Port Adelaide youngster Jackson Trengrove and McGrath for making unreasonable and unnecessary contact to the face of Power ruckman Cameron Cloke.

Three players have accepted fines offered by the MRP from incidents arising in round three.

Sydney's Kieren Jack accepted a $900 fine for making negligent contact with an umpire, Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne copped a $900 sanction for pinching Geelong star Gary Ablett while Hawthorn's Chance Bateman accepted an $1800 penalty for wrestling.

Richmond young gun Dustin Martin has accepted a reprimand for making forceful front-on contact with Swan Josh Kennedy.

Bastinac earns nomination

April 13th 2010 01:12

NORTH MELBOURNE youngster Ryan Bastinac has been rewarded for his performance in the Kangaroos' 25-point win over West Coast at Etihad Stadium on Saturday with the round three nomination for the NAB Rising Star award.

While limiting the influence of key Eagles midfielders Daniel Kerr and Matt Priddis, the 18-year-old racked up 24 possessions of his own including six inside-50s, four clearances and three tackles.

Bastinac was also among North's best on debut in round one against Port Adelaide with 23 touches and has played all three matches this season.

"Ryan had an outstanding pre-season and he has carried that form through the opening rounds," Roos coach Brad Scott said.

"We expect big things from Ryan in the future and his performance on Saturday against Daniel Kerr was just one small example of what he's capable of."

Hailing from the Narre Warren Football Club and the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup, Bastinac was taken by North Melbourne with pick 21 in last year's national draft.

WESTERN BULLDOGS tagger Liam Picken will miss at least six weeks with a serious ankle injury.

Picken sustained the injury in the final term of the Bulldogs' 16-point win over Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium on Sunday and will be unavailable for selection for six to eight weeks.

Dogs veteran Jason Akermanis injured his hamstring in the same match and is expected to miss two matches.

In some good news for the Bulldogs, defender Ryan Hargrave is expected to play in Saturday night's blockbuster clash with Brisbane at the Gabba after a CT scan cleared him of any serious damage to his neck.

AFL fines Malthouse, Milne

April 12th 2010 09:47

THE AFL has fined Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse and St Kilda small forward Stephen Milne over a heated exchange during quarter-time of Friday night's match at Etihad Stadium.

Milne provoked the incident by making derogatory comments about Malthouse's age and referring to Magpies assistant coach Paul Licuria as a homosexual.

Malthouse then responded by calling Milne a "f...ing rapist".

The slur was in reference to a police investigation in 2004 into allegations of sexual assault against Milne and teammate Leigh Montagna.

Both Malthouse and Milne issued apologies via statements late on Sunday night but it wasn't enough in the eyes of the league who fined the pair $7500 and $3000 respectively.

Licuria was also hit with a $3000 fine for using threatening language towards Milne.

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said it was unacceptable for a senior coach to insult an opposition player during game breaks.

"This conduct creates a volatile situation on the ground that could easily get out of hand," Anderson said.

"This is not the right example to set for coaches at community level."

"Michael recognises his conduct was wrong and his public apology to Milne was taken into account in his favour in determining his sanction.

Anderson said Licuria's language had the potential to 'seriously escalate the situation' while Milne was 'aggressive and insulting' to both Collingwood coaches.

"He (Licuria) recognises that this was totally inappropriate for someone in his role," he said.

"Milne used language towards Licuria that was homophobic and unacceptable."

"Milne's public apology was also taken into account in his favour in determining sanction."

Buddy hit with one-match ban

April 12th 2010 08:33

HAWTHORN star forward Lance Franklin has been hit with a one-match ban by the AFL match review panel for engaging in rough conduct against Western Bulldogs veteran Jason Akermanis.

Frankin's bump on Akermanis during the second quarter of Sunday's clash at Etihad Stadium was assessed as negligent conduct, low impact and high contact, drawing 125 demerit points.

Due to a two-match suspension for a similar clash with Richmond midfielder Ben Cousins in round 21 last year, Franklin cannot escape with a reprimand with an early guilty plea.

In some good news for the Hawks, the 2008 Coleman medallist won't be risking a heavier sanction if he elects to contest the charge at the AFL Tribunal.

Meanwhile, Brisbane could be without ruckman Mitch Clark and defender Ashley McGrath for Saturday night's blockbuster clash with the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba.

Clark was charged with striking Port Adelaide youngster Jackson Trengrove while McGrath was charged with making unreasonable and unnecessary contact to the face of Power ruckman Cameron Cloke.

Both players can accept one-match bans but will risk two-game sanctions if they choose to face the tribunal on Tuesday night.

The MRP took no action over a gang-tackle by three Melbourne players on Adelaide forward Patrick Dangerfield.

It was the view of the panel that Clint Bartram, James McDonald and Michael Newton had tackled Dangerfield in the one motion and did not deliberately sling him to the ground in the tackle.

The panel also said the momentum of the Demons trio caused Dangerfield's head to hit the turf.

The exciting 20-year-old Crow - who was put in a neck brace and taken to Richmond's Epworth Hospital after the tackle - has been cleared of any serious damage to his neck.

No action was taken over the heavy clash between Dogs defender Jarrod Harbrow and Hawthorn midfielder Jordan Lewis.

The match review panel deemed that both players had their eyes on the ball and Harbrow spoiled the ball before he made contact with Lewis.

"His actions were deemed a legitimate attempt to spoil the ball," the panel said.

Richmond young gun Dustin Martin can accept a reprimand for making forceful contact from front-on offence against Sydney's Josh Kennedy but risks a one-match ban if he challenges the charge.

Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne can accept a $900 fine for pinching Geelong star Gary Ablett.

Hawthorn's Chance Bateman accept a $1800 sanction for wrestling with Bulldog Shaun Higgins while North Melbourne's Andrew Swallow and Swan Kieran Jack were fined $1800 and $900 respectively for making negligent contact with field umpires.

The match day report against West Coast forward Ashley Hansen for striking North Melbourne wingman Daniel Wells was thrown out with the panel ruling that Hansen's arm was extended in a tackling motion.

Tigers suspend quartet

April 12th 2010 07:40

RICHMOND has suspended promising youngster Daniel Connors for eight weeks and three other players - including Ben Cousins - for one match for misbehaving at the team hotel in the hours after the Tigers' 55-point loss to Sydney at the SCG on Saturday night.

Connors copped the harshest penalties from the club's leadership group because his 'unsociable behaviour' included being drunk.

On top of the eight-game suspension, the 21-year-old will also be banned from training with the club for the next six weeks and will also have to undergo alcohol counselling once a week for an indefinite period.

Cousins, Luke McGuane and Dean Polo will miss Sunday's clash against Melbourne at the MCG.

Richmond said that while the trio were not intoxicated, they had not 'acted responsibly or in a manner expected of them by the club'.

"The Richmond Football Club will not tolerate the behaviour shown by these players, and has acted accordingly," Tigers football operations manager Craig Cameron said.

"These actions go against all the values that we set for ourselves as a club."

"Every player at this club needs to fully understand the responsibility that goes with pulling on the yellow and black jumper," Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale added.

Connors said he was 'extremely disappointed' in his behaviour.

"I apologise to all Richmond members and supporters, my team-mates, club officials and the guests at the Intercontinental Hotel, who were subjected to my behaviour," Connors said.

"Over the next few weeks I will be doing everything I can to win back the respect of those who I have let down."

"This has been a massive wake-up call for me and I accept that I have a problem with alcohol which I need to address."

April 11th 2010 12:26

ADELAIDE young gun Patrick Dangerfield has been cleared of serious neck damage after a gang-tackle by three Melbourne players resulted in him being put in a neck brace and stretchered off the field during the third term of the Crows' 16-point loss at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The 20-year-old underwent a CT scan which revealed no fracture but he will spend the night in Richmond's Epworth Hospital and undergo further scans on Monday.

Dockers overrun Cats

April 11th 2010 11:02

FREMANTLE has stamped itself as a genuine finals contender with a come-from-behind seven-point win over Geelong in a high-quality contest at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

The Dockers trailed by 14 points at three-quarter time but slammed on six goals to three in the final stanza to record a memorable 18.17 (125) 17.16 (118) victory.

The result means Fremantle is unbeaten after the first three rounds of the season for the first time in their history.

Some of the gloss was taken off the win for the Dockers with youngster Nick Suban - who signed a new deal with the club earlier in the week - suffering what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the dying minutes of the match.

Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich starred with a team-high 26 possessions and five goals, young gun Stephen Hill was impressive with 23 touches and two goals while Paul Duffield collected 25 disposals and kicked the match-winner.

Third-gamer Anthony Morabito, Hayden Ballantyne and Adam McPhee chipped in with two majors apiece while Aaron Sandilands was dominant in the ruck with 37 hit-outs.

Despite losing, it was an impressive performance by the Cats given that they were coming off a six-day break after a bruising encounter against Hawthorn and were without number one ruckman Brad Ottens (knee soreness) as well as star defender Matthew Scarlett and key forward Cameron Mooney due to suspensions.

Gary Ablett led the way for Geelong with 33 possessions and four goals while Paul Chapman racked up 28 touches and kicked three majors.

The Dockers will now face fellow undefeated side St Kilda at Etihad Stadium next Sunday while Geelong will clash with Port Adelaide at Skilled Stadium.

Hall leads Dogs to victory

April 11th 2010 08:47

WESTERN BULLDOGS spearhead Barry Hall has led his side to a 16-point victory over Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Hall kicked four of his six goals in the final stanza as the Bulldogs prevailed 14.16 (100) to 12.12. (84).

It was the Dogs' second successive win while the Hawks have now suffered back-to-back losses.

Both sides sustained injuries in what was a physical contest. Hawthorn midfielder Jordan Lewis was stretchered off after a sickening collision with Bulldogs defender Jarrod Harbrow but remarkably made it back onto the field in the final term.

Bulldogs defender Ryan Hargrave also suffered concussion after a bump by Hawks ruckman Brent Renouf while Dogs veteran Jason Akermanis and Hawthorn defender Josh Gibson injured hamstrings.

Late in the game Western Bulldogs tagger Liam Picken and Hawthorn's Brent Guerra sustained ankle injuries.

Matthew Boyd was instrumental in the win with a game-high 35 possessions while Ryan Griffen (34), Daniel Cross (28), Shaun Higgins (27) and Adam Cooney (27) were also influential.

Brian Lake did a superb job on Lance Franklin, keeping the Hawks star goalless while Lindsay Gilbee provided plenty of drive from defence with 25 quality disposals.

For Hawthorn, Cyril Rioli and Jarryd Roughead booted four goals apiece while skipper Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge collected 34 touches each,

Dees down Crows

April 11th 2010 07:19

MELBOURNE has opened its account this season with a 16-point win over Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The Demons trailed by 25 points early in the third term but lifted their rating and kicked six goals without reply to prevail 7.15 (47) to 5.11 (41).

The Crows - who were touted as a top-four contender before the start of the season - are now winless after three rounds and facing the prospect of being without star defender Nathan Bock (hamstring), young gun Patrick Dangerfield (neck/shoulder) and forwards Trent Hentschel (knee) and Kurt Tippett (ankle) for extended periods.

Melbourne skipper James McDonald led from the front with 24 possessions, 10 tackles and one goal while youngster Jack Trengrove impressed with 23 touches and a major in the third quarter which put the Demons in front.

James Frawley was rock-solid in defence while Jack Grimes provided plenty of drive off half-back

For Adelaide, Bernie Vince racked up a game-high 36 disposals while captain Simon Goodwin (35) was also prolific.

Bombers account for Blues

April 10th 2010 13:18

ESSENDON has broken through for its first win of the season, accounting for Carlton by 20 points at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Bombers' 13.17 (95) to 10.15 (75) victory was their sixth straight over the Blues.

Former Hawthorn premiership player Mark Williams - who headed into the match having kicked no goals for the Dons - booted four majors - two of which came in the final term - while Kyle Reimers chimed in with three goals - including two in the last quarter.

Dustin Fletcher and Tayte Pears were superb in defence while Nathan Lovett-Murray collected a game-high 30 possessions and booted one goal in his 100th game.

Kade Simpson was Carlton's best with 24 touches and two majors while Andrew Carrazzo and Marc Murphy also won plenty of the football.

The Bombers jumped out of the blocks with the first three goals of the contest before the Blues hit back with four of the last five majors to go into the first change with a three-point advantage.

Essendon had the first 10 scoring shots of the second quarter but failed to capitalise on their dominance, booting a wasteful 2.8.

Goals from Simpson and Eddie Betts saw Carlton close to within five points but a late goal from Sam Lonergan gave the Dons a 10-point buffer at the main break.

The margin blew out to 21 points at the nine-minute mark of the third term before Carlton got on top late in the quarter.

But like Essendon in the second quarter, the Blues failed to make the most of their chances.

They had the last five scoring shots of the term but managed only 1.4.

Carlton was made to pay for their wastefulness as the Dons kicked three of the first four goals of the final stanza to open up a match-winning 26-point lead.

Swans crush Tigers

April 10th 2010 12:28

SYDNEY has maintained its dominance over Richmond with a crushing 55-point win at the SCG on Saturday night.

The Swans set up the win with the first nine goals of the match before eventually prevailing 16.15 (111) to 7.14 (56).

It was Sydney's eighth straight win over the Tigers.

Richmond finished with the same number of inside 50 entries as the Swans but their delivery into the forward line was poor and they were continually punished on the rebound by Paul Roos' men.

Sydney had 10 individual goal-kickers for the match - Daniel Bradshaw the most effective with with four.

Bradshaw's first goal - which was also the first of the contest - saw him him reach 500 career goals.

Ben McGlynn continued his impressive start to his career as a Swan with 31 possesions and three goals after booting five majors in last weekend's win over Adelaide.

The former Hawk could have easily bettered his five-goal haul against the Crows but he failed to make the most of his chances, finishing the night with five behinds to his name.

Jude Bolton (33 disposals) was influential in the middle and was well supported by Jarrad McVeigh (27) and Josh Kennedy (24) while Heath Grundy and Nick Malceski were prolific in defence.

For Richmond, youngster Dustin Martin was impressive with 22 touches, Daniel Jackson and Shane Edwards tried hard while Jack Riewoldt played a lone hand up forward with three majors.

Lions too good for Port

April 10th 2010 08:46

BRISBANE remains unbeaten in 2010 after recording a 27-point win over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions got the early jump and went on to record a 16.12 (108) to 11.15 (81) victory.

The final scoreline flattered Port as Michael Voss' men took their foot off the pedal after booting the first two goals of the last term to blow the margin out to 57 points.

Some of the gloss was taken off the win for Brisbane with star midfielder Simon Black suffering a calf injury while ruckman Mitch Clark and defender Ashley McGrath were reported.

Lions skipper Jonathan Brown continued his superb form with five goals while Justin Sherman chipped in with four majors in his 100th game.

Brendan Fevola kicked three goals and set up several others.

Matthew Leuenberger and Clark dominated a Port ruck division weakened by the late withdrawal of Dean Brogan, combining for 47 hit-outs while Michael Rischitelli was influential with 27 possessions and seven inside 50's.

Steven Salopek was Port's best with 29 disposals and two goals while Kane Cornes collected 30 touches.

Brisbane will now face the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba next Saturday night while the Power will clash with Geelong at Skilled Stadium.

Roos bounce back

April 10th 2010 08:13

NORTH MELBOURNE has bounced back from last weekend's humiliating 104-point loss to St Kilda with a 25-point victory over West Coast at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Roos' 17.14 (116) to 13.13 (91) triumph was their first under new coach Brad Scott and made it the fifth consecutive time they had won the week after suffering a loss by 100 points or more.

It was a disappointing performance from the Eagles who continually turned the football over and also let themselves down with their kicking for goal in the final stanza, booting a wasteful 1.7.

West Coast is now winless after the opening three rounds for the first time since 1987.

Kangaroos skipper Brent Harvey - who mananged just five disposals against the Saints - was instrumental in the win with a career-best 44 possessions, 11 marks and one goal.

Harvey also came close to kicking the goal of the year in the final term but his shot on goal after a seven-bounce dash hit the post.

Daniel Wells showed his class with 33 quality touches, Liam Anthony racked up 27 disposals and booted three goals while youngster Ryan Bastinac kept Eagles star Daniel Kerr to just three possessions in fhe first half.

Matt Priddis was West Coast's most influential midfielder with 36 possessions and 13 clearances, Mark LeCras kicked five goals while Dean Cox played his best game of the season, managing 16 touches, 27 hit-outs and one goal.

Saints record gutsy win

April 9th 2010 13:18

ST KILDA has maintained its recent dominance over Collingwood with a gutsy 28-point win at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

Despite losing their best player in skipper Nick Riewoldt to a serious hamstring injury late in the first half, the Saints willed themselves to a 10.9 (69) to 4.17 (41) victory to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

It was St Kilda’s fourth straight win over the Magpies.

The Pies failed to kick a goal in the second half for the first time since 1987.

Sam Gilbert was the Saints’ best with a game-high 32 possessions and 20 marks, Steven Baker collected 28 touches and kept Leon Davis quiet while star midfielders Lenny Hayes (27) and Nick Dal Santo (27) were influential.

For Collingwood, Luke Ball racked up 28 disposals against his old side while youngster Sharrod Wellingham (25) continued his run of good form.

The match had plenty of feeling in it before a ball had even been bounced with a mini-melee breaking out after Harry O’Brien crashed into Saints tagger Clinton Jones.

Wellingham earned a free-kick after being caught high by Michael Gardiner in the scuffle.

The Magpies soon had the first goal of the contest on the board with Travis Cloke converting a set shot from 40m.

But their joy was short-lived as a free-kick against Leigh Brown for rough conduct as the ball was sailing through the goals, and a 50m penalty against O’Brien for abusing umpire Michael Vozzo gifted Brendon Goddard a goal.

Leigh Montagna kicked the only other major of the opening stanza to give the Saints a four-point buffer at the first change.

The lead changed hands five hands in a see-sawing second term with the Magpies going into the main break with their noses in front after Dayne Beams snapped truly late in the quarter.

The Pies dominated general play in the third term but let themselves down in front of goal, booting six straight behinds.

While Collingwood was incredibly wasteful, St Kilda made the most of their limited opportunities - managing two majors from three scoring shots to establish a four-point advantage at three-quarter time.

It was all-one way traffic in the final stanza as the Saints banged on goals through Adam Schneider, Michael Gardiner, James Gwilt and Montagna to secure the four premiership points.

Fevola escapes punishment

April 9th 2010 05:41

BRISBANE star Brendan Fevola has escaped punishment over his involvement in the Lara Bingle nude photo scandal.

Fevola was interviewed twice as part of an investigation conducted by the AFL's integrity services manager Brett Clothier and cultural strategy and education manager Sue Clark.

The investigation came about as a result of claims that Fevola took a nude photo of Bingle - with whom he had a brief affair with in 2006 - and distributed it to AFL players.

Bingle declined to speak directly with the league but provided a statutory declaration.

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said that while Fevola admitted taking the photograph, there was insufficient evidence to prove that the former Blue sent it to other players.

"Given the evidence currently available to us and the time elapsed since the alleged behaviour, the AFL has not established that a breach of our rules has occurred," Anderson said.

"However, we will continue to monitor whether there are legal proceedings arising from this matter and the AFL remains willing to speak with Ms Bingle."

"The AFL does not condone any behaviour which shows a lack of respect towards women."

"All AFL players and officials should be aware that taking and distributing private images without consent is unacceptable and can result in sanctions under the AFL player rules."

McVeigh released from hospital

April 9th 2010 04:48

ESSENDON veteran Mark McVeigh has been released from hospital on Friday after a bout of blood poisoning.

The 29-year-old - who will miss Saturday night's vital clash against Carlton at the MCG after being hospitalised for five nights as a result of a cut to his elbow becoming infected - doesn't know when he will return to the side.

"I am feeling okay but I still have a bit to go - I still feel a bit weak," McVeigh told the Bombers' official website.

"My elbow was pretty swollen during the (Fremantle) game and, after the game, I was physically ill and had to go to hospital."

"I just want to play for Essendon and I am pushing as hard as possible to be available as soon as possible."

"I will be staying home all weekend recovering and I want to thank all the family, friends and fans who have wished me well."

VENUE and TIME: Etihad Stadium, Friday April 9, 7.40pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 206, Collingwood 149, St Kilda 56, Draw 1

LAST TIME: St Kilda 12.8 (80) def Collingwood 7.10 (52), 1st QF at the MCG

RECENT HISTORY: The Saints have won their past three matches against Collingwood.

FORM: The Saints backed up their hard-fought win over Sydney with a 104-point demolition of a hapless North Melbourne side at Etihad Stadium last Saturday night. Like the Saints, Collingwood is unbeaten after two rounds but their two wins were at different ends of the spectrum. The Magpies were ultra-impressive in their 36-point win over the Western Bulldogs before scraping home by the barest of margins against a Melbourne side that has won the past two wooden spoons.

MEDICAL ROOM: Star St Kilda defender Sam Fisher returns from an ankle injury sustained in the NAB Cup grand final but Jack Steven (foot) and Jesse Smith (hamstring) are still unavailable. The Magpies welcome back veteran defender Simon Prestigiacomo and midfielder Shane O’Bree who both missed the match against Melbourne with a quad injury and virus respectively. Ben Johnson will be sidelined for up to a month after injuring his knee against the Demons while Heath Shaw is also out with a back injury. Cameron Wood (finger), Brad Dick (shoulder) and Josh Thomas (calf) remain on the sidelines.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Clinton Jones vs. Dane Swan

Swan may have collected 21 possessions against Melbourne but he didn’t have his usual influence.

When the 26-year-old is up and firing he is able to hurt sides with his ability to set up scoring opportunities for his teammates and also have an impact on the scoreboard himself.

If the Magpies are going to have any hope of kicking a winning score against a St Kilda defence that was the best in the AFL last season and shows no signs of being any less frugal in 2010 they will need Swan to have an impact in the middle.

However, his task won’t be an easy one as he will be tagged by Jones who restricted North Melbourne skipper Brent Harvey to a meagre five disposals last weekend.

It is vital for the Pies that Swan runs hard and pushes forward otherwise Jones will dictate terms and dominate.

Simon Prestigiacomo vs. Nick Riewoldt

Riewoldt has enjoyed a stellar start to the season, booting 11 goals in two games - seven of which came against the Kangaroos.

The St Kilda skipper is the main danger man for Collingwood given that he has booted 15 goals in his past three matches against the Magpies.

Prestigiacomo - who has lined up on Riewoldt in recent times - will be given the unenviable task once again of trying to quell the Saints star.

The 32-year-old defender will need his midfield to apply relentless pressure otherwise Riewoldt will feast on silver service

Zac Dawson vs. Travis Cloke

Cloke has had a disappointing start to the season, managing just two goals in two games.

The 23-year-old will need to win his duel against Dawson if the Magpies are going to have any chance of kicking a winning score.

In the round one NAB Cup clash between the Pies and the Saints Cloke was lively with 15 possessions and 10 marks but let himself down in front of goal, booting a wasteful 2.5.

It is important for the Pies that Cloke converts early as he is very much a confidence player.

Dale Thomas vs. Nick Dal Santo

Dal Santo was instrumental in the Saints’ two wins over the Pies last season, averaging 36 possessions.

If Collingwood is going to have any hope of containing St Kilda’s potent attack they will need to limit the influence of Dal Santo who is a quality user of the football.

Thomas - who was one of the Magpies’ best in the win over the Demons with 25 disposals - has been used in run-with roles in the past and could well be given the job of running with Dal Santo.

The Pies will need Thomas to be proactive and be a contributor on the scoreboard as it will force Dal Santo to worry about his direct opponent which in turn will help limit his impact on the match as a creative midfielder.

VERDICT: Collingwood will undoubtedly be switched on for this clash after a lacklustre performance against Melbourne but St Kilda has an edge in class in the middle with the likes of Leigh Montagna, Lenny Hayes, Brendon Goddard and Dal Santo all in top form. Expect the Saints‘ on-ball division to provide Riewoldt with enough supply to be the match-winner once again in what promises to be a an engrossing contest. Saints by 17 points.

FREMANTLE has rewarded mature-age rookie Michael Barlow for his stunning start to his AFL career with a new two-year deal which will see him remain with the Dockers until at least the end of the 2012 season.

The 22-year-old - who was recruited from VFL club Werribee with pick eight in last year's rookie draft - has collected a total of 67 possessions and booted three goals in the first two rounds against Adelaide and Essendon after being elevated to Fremantle's senior list last month.

"Although Michael is only a few games into his career, we are very positive about his future prospects and his capacity to play a role in our midfield," Dockers player manager Brad Lloyd said.

Meanwhile, Fremantle has promoted Matt de Boer to their senior list to replace Dean Solomon who retired in February.

As a result, de Boer been named on an extended bench for Sunday's clash against Geelong at Subiaco Oval.

Mooney, Shiels suspended

April 7th 2010 10:52

GEELONG key forward Cameron Mooney and Hawthorn youngster Liam Shiels have failed in their bids to have their suspensions overturned at the AFL Tribunal on Wednesday night.

Mooney contested that he did not make forceful contact with Hawk Rick Ladson's head or neck and had no reasonable alternative than to bump him but the tribunal disagreed.

The Cats veteran will now miss Sunday's match against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval.

Shiels was suspended for two games after the tribunal found him guilty of striking Geelong skipper Cameron Ling during the first quarter of the fiery Easter Monday clash at the MCG.

The 19-year-old Hawk could have accepted a one-match ban but he elected to challenge the match review panel's decision at the tribunal where he unsuccessfully argued that his elbow to Ling's head was reckless and not intentional.

Shiels will now be unavailable for matches against the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood.

Earlier on Wednesday, Hawthorn forward Michael Osborne accepted a one-match suspension for making forceful contact with Joel Selwood while star Cats defender Matthew Scarlett accepted the same penalty for kneeing Osborne.

Key Cats hit with suspensions

April 6th 2010 05:56

KEY Geelong duo Matthew Scarlett and Cameron Mooney have been hit with suspensions by the AFL match review panel on Tuesday.

Scarlett was charged with kneeing Michael Osborne during the first quarter of the Cats' hard-fought nine-point win over Hawthorn at the MCG on Easter Monday.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct, low impact and contact to the groin, which equated to 225 demerit points and a two-match suspension.

However, an early guilty plea will see Scarlett miss just one game.

Mooney's charge of engaging in rough conduct against Rick Ladson was viewed as negligent conduct, low impact and high contact for a base tally of 125 points.

Due to a suspension in the past 12 months Mooney cannot reduce his one-match ban with an early plea.

Hawks pair Liam Shiels and Osborne were also booked by the MRP.

Shiels can accept a one-match suspension for striking Geelong skipper Cameron Ling but will be risking a two-match ban if he elects to contest the charge at the tribunal.

Osborne will also be risking a two-game sanction if he challenges his charge of making forceful contact from front-on against star Cats midfielder Joel Selwood

Meanwhile, the three players charged by the match review panel on Monday have accepted their penalties.

Brisbane will be without Jared Brennan for Saturday's clash against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium after the classy utility accepted a one-match ban for making forceful contact from front-on against Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer.

West Coast's Shannon Hurn will miss matches against North Melbourne and Essendon after accepting a two-match suspension for a head-high bump on Port Adelaidedefender Paul Stewart while Bombers defender Courtenay Dempsey has accepted a reprimand for striking Fremantle's Hayden Ballantyne.

Setback for Motlop

April 6th 2010 04:41

PORT ADELAIDE forward Daniel Motlop has suffered a setback in his bid to return from a hamstring injury with scans revealing a tear.

Motlop - who injured his right hamstring while playing for SANFL side North Adelaide last month - was initially cleared of serious damage but tests over the weekend confirmed a tear.

The 28-year-old is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks.

Hannebery earns nomination

April 6th 2010 02:41

SYDNEY midfielder Daniel Hannebery has earned the round two NAB Rising Star nomination for his performance in the club's 43-point win over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The 19-year-old collected 23 possessions and laid four tackles in what was his first game of the year after managing seven appearances in his debut season in 2009.

Swans coach coach Paul Roos said Hannebery had stepped up over the pre-season.

"Dan has worked extremely hard since Christmas to get himself super fit. He played very well in the seconds over the last couple of weeks and then showed on Sunday against Adelaide that he has improved on last year," Roos said.

"He had a real impact on the game. He has areas of his game he wants to continue to work on, there is still a lot of improvement in his game but we're really pleased with the way he's going."

"His nomination shows the direction the club is heading. We've got some good young kids and hopefully they'll put pressure on the senior players throughout the year."

Originally from the Kew Rovers Junior Football Club in Melbourne, Hannebery was taken by Sydney with pick 30 in the 2008 national draft.

Pies pip Dees

April 3rd 2010 06:04

COLLINGWOOD has held on for a thrilling one-point win over a gallant Melbourne side at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies trailed by 11 points in the final term but kicked the last two goals of the match to prevail 12.14 (86) to 12.13 (85).

It was a vastly improved performance from the Demons who were thumped to the tune of 56 points by Hawthorn in round one.

The win came at a cost for the Pies with veteran Ben Johnson suffering what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the second quarter.

Scott Pendlebury was Collingwood's best with 24 possessions and two goals while Dayne Beams - a late inclusion for Shane O'Bree - collected 27 touches.

For the Dees, Ricky Petterd starred with four goals while 200-gamer Brad Green chipped in with three majors.

Mark Jamar was dominant in the ruck with 36 hit outs while Aaron Davey was all class with 27 disposals.

Melbourne played with plenty of intent from the outset, applying relentless pressure all over the ground, winning the clearances and more of the contested football than the Magpies.

The Demons also won the inside 50 count 16-9 in the first term and booted four goals for the quarter to go into the first change with a 15-point lead.

A quarter-time spray from coach Mick Malthouse did the trick as the Pies lifted their intensity and slammed on the first four majors of the second term to hit the front.

It appeared as if Collingwood would run away with the match but two goals from Petterd kept Melbourne within striking distance at the main break with the Magpies holding a five-point advantage.

The Dees kicked the first two goals of the second half through Jamie Bennell and Green before the contest became an arm-wrestle until quickfire majors from Paul Medhurst and Beams in time-on ensured the Pies maintained their half-time advantage going into the final change.

Goals from Petterd, Green and Lynden Dunn saw the Demons open up a handy break in the last term before John Anthony converted a set shot to cut the deficit to five points.

Melbourne was made to pay the ultimate price for a loose Clint Bartram handball in defence with Leon Davis kicking truly from 35m at the 24-minute mark to give Collingwood the lead.

With just seconds left in the match Dees youngster Rohan Bail pumped the football to a waiting Petterd in the goalsquare.

Petterd looked set to take a match-winning mark but a late challenge from Steele Sidebottom saw him spill the ball.

VENUE and TIME: Subiaco Oval, Saturday April 3, 5:40pm AWST (8.40pm AEDT)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 19, Port Adelaide 13, West Coast 6

LAST TIME: Port Adelaide 17.10 (112) d West Coast 11.10 (76), Round 16, 2009 at AAMI Stadium

RECENT HISTORY: Port Adelaide has won eight of its past ten matches against West Coast but only two of those wins came at Subiaco Oval.

FORM: West Coast led Brisbane at every change at the Gabba last Saturday night before fading badly in the last term as the Lions romped to a 32-point victory. Port got the early jump and survived a spirited fight-back from North to win their opening round clash by 14 points.

MEDICAL ROOM: Star Eagles small forward Mark LeCras will miss the match against the Power with hamstring soreness while Ryan Neates (shoulder), Adam Cockie (knee), Brad Sheppard (fractured eye socket) and Koby Stevens (knee) are a few weeks away from playing. Tim Houlihan (lacerated foot) isn’t expected to be considered for selection until at least round 10. For Port, Robert Gray, Daniel Motlop and young gun Hamish Hartlett will miss at least another week with hamstring injuries while John Butcher (back) and Marlon Motlop (foot stress fractures) are sidelined indefinitely.

Kane Cornes vs. Daniel Kerr

Kerr was instrumental in the Eagles’ 50-point win over Port at Subiaco Oval in round two last year with 28 possessions and four goals in a performance that earned him the three Brownlow medal votes.

Power coach Mark Williams didn’t put a tag on Kerr that day - he won’t make the same mistake twice.

Cornes is capable of not only quelling the influence of his opponents but also winning his fair share of the football - highlighted by his effort in round one when he kept Kangaroos star Daniel Wells to 16 possessions and collected 39 of his own.

It is vital for the Eagles that Kerr works hard going both ways.

Darren Glass vs. Warren Tredrea

Tredrea got his season off to a solid start with 13 possessions, five marks, two goals and seven inside 50’s against North.

The former Port skipper will be keen to back it up with a big performance in what will be his 250th game.

However, his task won’t be any easy one as he will be matched up by Glass who kept him goalless the last time these two sides met at Subiaco Oval.

The West Coast captain is regarded as one of the best spoilers of the football in the competition so the Power will need to be quick and precise with their delivery inside 50.

Alipate Carlile vs. Josh Kennedy

Kennedy was West Coast’s second most productive forward behind LeCras in 2009 and will need to fire to if the Eagles are going to record their first win of the season.

With Quinten Lynch out of the side you would expect Kennedy to play out of the square which means he will be matched up by Carlile.

West Coast was guilty of bombing the football haphazardly into the forward line at time last weekend - especially during the last quarter.

The Eagles will need to be smarter with their use of the football going forward on Saturday night otherwise they will be consistently punished on the rebound by the Power.

Patrick McGinnity vs. Danyle Pearce

Pearce is an integral part of Port’s midfield with his ability to break the lines and pump the football inside 50.

Shutting down the drive the 23-year-old provides through the middle of the ground will be vital for West Coast if they are going to restrict a Power side that is capable of scoring heavily.

The last time these two sides met in round 16 last year McGinnity did a good job on Pearce, limiting him to just 16 disposals.

Expect McGinnity to apply plenty of body pressure - especially early in an attempt to put Pearce off his game.

VERDICT: When these two teams met in round two of the NAB Cup Port had no recognised ruckman in their side as they elected to rest Dean Brogan. As a result West Coast enjoyed a 22-0 centre hit-out dominance that was extended to 41-10 around the ground. While the Power convincingly won the clearances and the match, the Eagles were missing a host of midfielders including their two best clearance players in Matt Priddis and Kerr. Expect Port’s lack of a quality second ruckman to support Brogan to hurt them in what shapes as being a tight contest. Eagles by 15 points.

VENUE and TIME: Etihad Stadium, Saturday 3 April, 7.10pm (AEDT)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 145, St Kilda 72, North Melbourne 71, Draws 2

LAST TIME: North Melbourne 10.4 (64) def St Kilda 8.11 (59), Round 21 2009 at Etihad Stadium

RECENT HISTORY: St Kilda has won four of its past six matches against North Melbourne.

FORM: St Kilda wasn’t at its best but did enough to open their season with a win, accounting for a valiant Sydney side by eight points. North trailed Port Adelaide by as much as 50 points at AAMI Stadium last Sunday before coming home with a wet sail. However, it was a case of too little too late as they went down by 14 points.

MEDICAL ROOM: The Saints will be without star defender Sam Fisher (ankle) for at least another three weeks while Raphael Clarke (hamstring), Robert Eddy (ankle) and Jesse Smith (ankle) are also on the sidelines. For the Kangaroos, star utility Drew Petrie will be unavailable for selection until approximately round seven due to a foot injury while Ed Lower (leg), Levi Greenwood (toe), Alan Obst (quad), Cruize Garlett (wrist) and Majak Daw (foot) are also sidelined.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Lachie Hansen vs. Nick Riewoldt

If North is going to have any hope of opening their account in 2010 they will need to contain Riewoldt who was instrumental in the Saints’ win over the Swans with 22 possessions, five marks and four goals.

Hansen will be given the job on Riewoldt as he is able to match him in the air and has the tank to go with the hard-leading St Kilda skipper.

A feature of the Kangaroos’ win over the Saints last year was their tackling - they laid a an impressive 86 tackles.

The Roos will need to apply the same level of pressure on Saturday night otherwise Riewoldt - who is virtually unstoppable on the lead - will feast on quality supply from Nick Dal Santo, Lenny Hayes, Leigh Montagna and co.

Clinton Jones vs. Brent Harvey

Harvey played a key role in North’s late surge against Port Adelaide, finishing the match with 24 possessions and three goals.

Shutting down the drive the Kangaroos skipper provides through the middle of the ground will go a long way towards securing victory for the Saints.

Jones did a superb job on Harvey the last time these two sides met in round 21 last year, restricting him to just 16 possessions.

Harvey will need his teammates to block for him at the stoppages as Jones will give him no space in which to work in.

Brady Rawlings vs. Leigh Montagna

Montagna was one of St Kilda’s best against Sydney with a team-high 26 disposals and five inside 50’s.

Limiting Montagna’s influence will be a key for the Kangaroos if they are going to contain a St Kilda side that was the third most attacking in the AFL last season.

Rawlings is North’s number one stopper in the middle and will be given the job of trying to negate Montagna.

It is vital for the Roos that Rawlings - who is good in the clinches - is proactive as it will force Montagna to worry about him which in turn will help limit the impact the Saints star has on the contest as a line-breaking midfielder.

David Armitage vs. Andrew Swallow

Swallow was instrumental in the Kangaroos’ shock five-point win over St Kilda in the penultimate round of the home-and-away season last year with a game-high 33 possessions.

The 22-year-old was well below his best against Port Adelaide, managing just 11 touches.

North will need their reigning best-and-fairest winner to have an impact at the stoppages - an area in which the Roos were soundly beaten by Power in the first half otherwise they will struggle to provide their forward line - which was the least productive in the AFL in 2009 with enough opportunities to kick a winning score.

Armitage is not only a fierce tackler but but also highly effective at winning his fair share of the contested football.

Expect the St Kilda youngster to try and test out the defensive side of Swallow's game.

VERDICT: North will head into this clash with some confidence given that they accounted for St Kilda the last time these two sides met but they will be without Petrie who was instrumental in that win with four goals. While the Saints will also be missing a key forward in Justin Koschitzke due to suspension, they still have a number of quality forward options.Saints by 24 points.

VENUE and TIME: MCG, Saturday 3 April March, 2.10pm (AEDT)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 223, Collingwood 140, Melbourne 79, Draws: 4

LAST TIME: Collingwood 19.12 (126) def Melbourne 8.12 (60). Round 11, 2009 at the MCG

RECENT HISTORY: Collingwood has won their past four matches against Melbourne.

FORM: The Magpies stamped themselves as a genuine premiership contender with an impressive 36-point win over NAB Cup premiers the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium last Sunday. Melbourne was bitterly disappointing in round one, going down to a Hawthorn side that was missing a number of key players by 56 points.

MEDICAL ROOM: The Pies will be without veteran full-back Simon Prestigiacomo who sustained a quad injury in the win over the Bulldogs while Cameron Wood (finger, 3-5 weeks), Brad Dick (shoulder, seven to nine weeks) and Josh Thomas (calf, three to five weeks) are also unavailable. For the Demons, defender Jared Rivers will miss the clash against the Pies after injuring his knee in the loss to the Hawks while Colin Sylvia is out for at least another week with a broken jaw. Exciting forward Liam Jurrah (shoulder), John Meesen (foot stress fractures), Max Gawn (knee) and Luke Tascott (hip) are sidelined indefinitely. Cale Morton (knee), Neville Jetta (groin), Daniel Bell (shoulder) and Austin Wonaeamirri (hamstring) are a few weeks away from playing.

KEY MATCH-UPS: James McDonald vs. Scott Pendlebury

The last time these two sides met in round 11 last year Pendlebury was allowed to run free and made Melbourne pay as he racked up a game-high 39 possessions, 11 marks and six inside 50’s in a performance that earned him the three Brownlow medal votes.

The Magpies vice-captain is highly effective and winning the football at close quarters and using it cleanly.

Melbourne will need to limit his influence in the middle if they are going to have any hope of containing the Pies’ multi-pronged attack.

McDonald one of few Demons’ best against the Hawks, collecting 21 touches and laying 10 tackles.

He will need to apply the same level of pressure on Pendlebury otherwise he will continually hurt Melbourne with his clean skills.

Sharrod Wellingham vs. Aaron Davey

Like a lot of his teammates, Davey was below his best against Hawthorn - managing just 17 possessions - down on his average of 22.9 in 2009.

When Davey is on-song he is able to consistently set up scoring opportunities for his teammates with his sublime kicking skills.

It is vital for the Demons that the 26-year-old fires otherwise their forwards won’t get enough quality supply to even have a hope of kicking a big enough score to pull off what would be a massive upset.

Wellingham - who was dominant in the opening term while opposed to Bulldogs star midfielder Adam Cooney - has the pace to go with Davey and will be given first crack at the Melbourne on-baller.

Expect the Collingwood youngster to try and hurt Davey going the other way as it will force him to be accountable which in turn will help limit his impact on the contest as a creative midfielder.

James Frawley vs. Paul Medhurst

Medhurst got his 2010 campaign off to a perfect start with a four-goal performance against the Dogs and will be keen to back it up with another haul against the Demons.

Frawley will get the job on the former Docker given that he restricted him to just one goal the last time these two sides met in round 11 last year.

With the exception of a few players, Melbourne were well below par when it came to applying pressure against Hawthorn.

They will need to increase their intensity ten-fold otherwise the likes of Medhurst will continually receive the football lace-out.

Harry O’Brien vs. Matthew Bate

Bate failed to trouble the scorers in round one and will be desperate to rebound with a strong showing.

However, his task won’t be an easy one as he will be matched up by the in-form O’Brien who has done the job on him in the past.

Melbourne had 351 possessions against Hawthorn - 176 of which were handballs.

They will need to be a lot more direct in their play to give Bate and co. the best possible chance of having an impact on the scoreboard as they simply don’t have the skills to play a possession brand of football.

VERDICT: It was an ugly start to the season for Melbourne last weekend and it won’t get any better for them on Saturday. Collingwood simply has too many quality players on every line for a Demons side that is well below AFL standard. Magpies by 65 points.

Brown inspired Lions down Blues

April 1st 2010 12:24

BRISBANE skipper Jonathan Brown has inspired his side to a 19-point win over Carlton at the Gabba on Thursday night.

Brown booted seven goals to lift the Lions to a 16.11 (107) to 12.16 (88) victory over a spirited Blues outfit.

He also collected 21 possessions and pulled down 12 marks in a dominant all-round performance.

Brown’s partner-in-crime - Brendan Fevola - was lively early but was well held by Michael Jamison in the second half - finishing with three goals against his former side.

Luke Power (27 possessions), Travis Johnstone (24) and Jared Brennan (22) were busy contributors.

Marc Murphy was Carlton’s best with 34 disposals while Heath Scotland (33), Bryce Gibbs (28) and Brock McLean (27) were also prolific.

Up forward, Setanta O’hAilpin booted four majors while Lachie Henderson - who was traded to the Blues as a part of the Fevola deal - chimed in with three goals.

Carlton started brightly, kicking two of the first three goals of the match before Brisbane clicked into gear.

They slammed on the last three majors of the term with Fevola chipping in with two as the Lions went into quarter-time with a nine-point lead.

As they did in the first term Carlton dominated the clearances and won more of the contested football than Brisbane in the second quarter but let themselves down in front of goal, managing just one goal from six scoring shots.

While the Blues were wasteful the Lions were incredibly efficient, booting four straight goals for the term to go into the main break with a 22-point advantage.

Brett Ratten’s men came out all guns blazing after half-time, piling on four majors without reply in the opening eight minutes of the third term to hit the front.

Brisbane got a much needed goal through Mitch Clark but the Blues continued to control the midfield and hit back with three of the last four goals of the quarter to go into three-quarter time with a seven-point buffer.

Both sides traded early goals in the final term before the Lions banged on four unanswered majors - two of which came off the boot of Brown - to open up an 18-point break.

O’hAilpin gave Carlton a glimmer of hope with his fourth goal of the night but Brown’s seventh - a superb effort from near the boundary - snuffed out the Blues’ chances.

AFL suspends timekeepers

April 1st 2010 07:16

THE AFL has suspended two timekeepers over a device malfunction which led to more than two minutes of extra playing time during the clash between Brisbane and West Coast at the Gabba last Saturday night.

There were 39 seconds of extra time played in the second quarter, 49 seconds in the third quarter and one minute and 13 seconds in the final quarter.

Despite the malfunction, the result and final score of the match - which the Lions won by 32 points - will stand as the extra time had no effect on the final score with both sides managing one goal and one behind during the additional two minutes and 41 seconds of play.

While the extra time played was due to malfunctioning equipment and not timekeeper error, the two timekeepers failed to immediately report potential issues with the timing of the match which resulted in them being suspended.

The AFL said in a statement that this is the first time the timing devices have malfunctioned in two years of use.

"The actual device used in the match has been replaced and all other timing devices in use over the coming weekend have been checked," the statement read.

"Redundancies in the timekeeper’s procedures have been strengthened to ensure there is no repeat."

Lovett hearing put on hold

April 1st 2010 04:46

ANDREW Lovett's grievance hearing against St Kilda has been put on hold pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.

The 27-year-old, who was sacked by the Saints a day after he was charged with rape, is seeking a payout of his three-year, million-dollar-plus contract.

A decision on the matter was set to be made on April 1 but the AFL Grievance Tribunal granted applications made by St Kilda and Victoria Police for the hearing to be deferred until Lovett's court case has finished.

The Victorian Goverment Solicitors Office said on behalf of the Chief Commssioner of Victoria Police that a hearing that would rule on the lawfulness of Lovett's sacking could be prejudicial to the trial.

A committal session for Lovett's rape case will be held on May 7.
