Saints too good for Eagles

May 23rd 2010 09:29

ST KILDA has ended a two-match losing run with a come-from-behind 35-point win over West Coast at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

The Saints trailed by 17 points early in the third quarter but lifted and piled on nine of the last ten goals of the contest to record a 13.13 (91) to 8.8 (56) victory.

It was St Kilda's sixth win of the season while the Eagles now have six losses to their name after nine rounds.

Saints acting captain Lenny Hayes led from the front with 35 possessions while Brendon Goddard (30) and Nick Dal Santo (27) were also influential.

Jason Blake and Raphael Clarke held in-form West Coast forwards Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras goalless. Clarke also generated plenty of run from defence with 21 touches.

St Kilda had nine individual goal-kickers for the match - Stephen Milne the most effective with three majors.

Adam Selwood was West Coast's best with 32 disposals and two goals, Matt Priddis (34 possessions) tried hard while Ben McKinley booted four first-half majors.

Dees win thriller

May 22nd 2010 12:54

MELBOURNE has snapped a three-game losing streak with a thrillling one-point win over Port Adelaide at TIO Stadium in Darwin on Saturday night.

The Demons led by 33 points at three-quarter time but the Power lifted their rating and banged on seven of the first eight goals of the final stanza to hit the front at the 21-minute mark.

Jamie Bennell gave Melbourne back the lead with a classy snap before the lead changed hands again courtesy of Cameron Hitchcock's third major.

Tom Logan had the chance to give Port a handy break but his shot from 50m sailed wide.

The Dees rushed the ball up the ground and found Brad Green who kicked truly to level the scores with just under five minutes remaining.

A rushed behind from a ball-up put Melbourne in front with little over a minute left on the clock before Port defender Alipate Carlile was penalised for stepping outside the goal-square from the resultant kick-in.

It proved to be a costly error as the Demons held firm in the dying stages to record a 17.9 (111) to 16.14 (110) win.

Melbourne now has four wins on the board for the year while the Power slips to 5-4 after their second successive loss.

Much-maligned Demons forward Brad Miller top-scored with five goals while Bennell and Green chipped in with four and three majors respectively.

Aaron Davey showed his class with 26 possessions while Colin Sylvia (25) and impressive youngster Jack Trengrove (24) were busy contributors.

Travis Boak was Port's best with 25 disposals and three goals while Kane Cornes collected 28 touches.

Dockers down Swans

May 22nd 2010 08:36

FREMANTLE has recorded its first win over Sydney at the SCG since 1996, downing the Swans by 37 points on Saturday afternoon.

The Dockers led at every change before posting a 14.16 (100) to 9.9 (63) win.

It was an impressive performance by Mark Harvey’s men given the drama surrounding Michael Johnson’s drug charge earlier in the week.

The result sees Fremantle improve to 7-2 while Sydney has now lost three matches on the trot to slip to 5-4.

And to make matters worse for the Swans, hard-running defender Tadhg Kennelly and spearhead Daniel Bradshaw suffered knee injuries.

Dockers skipper Matthew Pavlich was dominant early, booting three first-half goals while David Mundy (25 possessions) and youngster Nathan Fyfe (23) were prominent.

Paul Hasleby (16 disposals, two goals) and Kepler Bradley (15 disposals, 10 hit-outs and two goals) were also among Fremantle's best.

For the Swans, Nick Malceski and Daniel Hannebery collected 28 touches each while Gary Rohan was lively with 15 touches and one goal in just his third game.

Dogs thump Roos

May 22nd 2010 08:03

THE Western Bulldogs have thumped North Melbourne to the tune of 70 points at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs slammed on the first ten goals of the contest before going on to record a 20.7 (127) to 7.15 (57) victory.

It was the Dogs' third successive win and sixth of the season.

The big story to come out of the match was the report of prize Bulldogs recruit Barry Hall for engaging in rough conduct and wrestling Kangaroos defender Scott Thompson in the second quarter.

Thompson sparked the incident by bumping Hall onto the ground while the former Swan was tying his bootlaces.

Hall responded by grabbing Thompson in a headlock and didn’t relinquish his grip as Roos players converged.

Thompson finally managed to get his head free and ended up having his name put in the book for an alleged head-butt on Hall.

Adam Cooney was best afield with 36 possessions and two goals while Brian Lake did as he pleased in defence, finishing with 41 disposals and 22 marks.

Josh Hill kicked four goals while Hall chimed in with three majors.

Cats outclass Pies

May 21st 2010 12:28

GEELONG has claimed top spot on the AFL ladder with a 36-point win over Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night.

The Cats trailed by 11 points at the 20-minute mark of the third quarter but kicked eight unanswered goals to run out 12.14 (86) to 6.14 (50) victors.

James Kelly was impressive with a game-high 32 possessions while Gary Ablett (31) and James Bartel (30) were also prolific.

Cameron Mooney kicked three goals in his 200th game while Mathew Stokes also managed three majors in just his second game of the year after serving a club-imposed suspension.

For the Magpies, Dayne Beams booted a career-best four goals while Ben Johnson (28 disposals) and Luke Ball (27) battled hard all night.

Collingwood got the first goal of the match through Dane Swan in just the second minute before Ablett roved a Mark Blake tap and kicked truly from 45m out on an acute angle a minute later.

They were the only goals in a first quarter in which both sides applied intense pressure.

The Pies got off to a dream start in the second term with Beams converting a set shot in the opening minute.

But Geelong took control of general play from that moment on and managed goals through Steve Johnson, Mooney and Tom Hawkins on their way to a 16-point advantage at the 24-minute mark.

It appeared as if the Cats would go into the main break with a handy buffer but a brilliant tackle by Alan Didak on Josh Hunt led to Beams soccering one home from close range before the young Magpie marked and made no mistake from 50m on the siren to cut the deficit to just five points at half-time.

Goals from Beams and Shane O'Bree saw Collingwood open up a 10-point lead early in the third quarter.

The Pies had all the momentum but failed to capitalise in front of goal.

They were made to pay as the Cats banged on five majors in a 10-minute burst with Mooney chipping in with two to help his side to a 22-point lead at three-quarter time.

Collingwood pressed hard early in the final stanza but managed just five behinds before Geelong launched a counter-attack which resulted in Stokes running into an open goal to put the result beyond doubt.

VENUE and TIME: MCG, Friday 21 May, 7.40pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 216, Collingwood 124, Geelong 91, Drawn 1

LAST TIME: Geelong 17.18 (120) def Collingwood 6.11 (47), Preliminary Final 2009 at the MCG

RECENT HISTORY: Geelong has won four of its past five matches against Collingwood.

FORM: Collingwood sits on top of the AFL ladder with a 7-1 win-loss record - their best start to a season since 1981. The Magpies have won their past five matches by an average of 56 points. Geelong has responded to a disappointing loss to Carlton in round five with convincing wins over Richmond (108), Sydney (67) and Brisbane (81). The Cats occupy second spot on the ladder with a 6-2 record.

MEDICAL ROOM: The Pies welcome back impressive young midfielder Sharrod Wellingham from a calf injury but small forward Paul Medhurst (foot), John McCarthy (hamstring), Sean Rusling (calf - one to two weeks) and Anthony Corrie (knee - two to three weeks) remain on the sidelines. For Geelong, mature-age recruit James Podsiadly and James Kelly return to the side after missing the win over the Lions due to groin and calf injuries respectively. Star midfielder Joel Corey (knee) is a month away from playing while ruckman Brad Ottens (foot - four to six weeks) and rugged utility Max Rooke (knee) are also unavailable.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Cameron Ling vs. Dane Swan

Swan was instrumental in Collingwood's win over the Dockers with 31 possessions and five inside 50’s.

Shutting down Swan will be vital for the Cats if they are going to starve Collingwood’s multi-pronged attack of quality supply.

Ling is one of the best midfield stoppers in the competition and will be given the job of tagging the hard-running Magpie.

Don’t be surprised if Swan starts up forward in a bid to take Ling out of his comfort zone then pushes into the middle.

Harry O’Brien vs. Steve Johnson

Johnson is in stellar form having booted 15 goals in his past three matches, including an equal career-best six against Brisbane.

O’Brien looms as the obvious candidate to match-up on the classy 26-year-old given that he has quelled his influence in the past.

In the win over the Dockers the Pies laid a staggering 93 tackles.

They will need to apply that level of pressure on Friday night otherwise the Cats will continually attack through the corridor and provide the likes of Johnson with plenty of quality ball.

Harry Taylor vs. Travis Cloke

Cloke returned to form with five goals against Fremantle and will need to put in yet another big performance if the Pies are going to claim the four premiership points.

However, his task won’t be an easy one as he will be coming up against Taylor who has developed into arguably one of the best defenders in the league.

The 23-year-old Cat is a good reader of the play who marks well in contested situations.

In fact, Taylor is ranked ninth in the AFL in 2010 for total contested marks.

Collingwood will need to be patient and precise with their delivery of the football into the forward line otherwise Taylor will help set up Geelong’s attacking forays.

Sharrod Wellingham vs. Gary Ablett

The last time these two sides met in the second preliminary final Ablett was damaging with a game-high 34 disposals, two goals and four inside 50’s.

Limiting the creative run of the reigning Brownlow medallist will be a key for the Magpies if they are going to have any hope of containing the most attacking side in the AFL.

Wellingham - who has taken his game to another level this season - will be given the task of running with Ablett.

It is vital for the Pies that Wellingham is proactive and tries to hurt Ablett going the other way otherwise the Cats star will dictate terms and dominate.

VERDICT: This match is being billed as the biggest of the season to date and surely won‘t disappoint. Geelong and Collingwood boast quality midfield divisions and are the two most attacking sides in the competition but it is in defence where this contest will be won. The Cats’ defensive unit has conceded 186 points in the past three rounds while the Magpies’ backline has leaked 290 in the same period. Cats by 19 points.

FREMANTLE has imposed a raft of sanctions on utility Michael Johnson after he was charged by police on Tuesday with possession of cocaine, including a six-week suspension.

The Dockers announced the sanctions - which were determined under the AFL player code of conduct and in consultation with the club's leadership group and the AFL - at a press conference on Wednesday.

They are as follows:

- Suspension from training with the club until May 31.

- From May 31, Johnson will be able to train with the club but will not be available for selection at AFL or WAFL level until June 21. He will be available for WAFL selection from this date.

- Not available for AFL selection for the club for a total of six weeks (being five AFL matches and the AFL bye), making Johnson available for selection for round 14.

- Stood down from the club’s leadership group for the 2010 season.

- Fine of $5,000, the maximum allowable under the AFL’s player code of conduct.

- Attendance at appropriate drug counselling sessions as determined by the AFL’s Medical Officers.

- Voluntary target testing under AFL guidelines and procedures and the illicit drugs policy.

Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said the sanctions would stand regardless of the outcome of the police charge for a small amount of cocaine.

"While we will ensure that Michael's ongoing welfare is paramount, we are extremely disappointed that, while under the influence of alcohol, he engaged in public conduct that has resulted in a drug related police charge," Rosich said.

"We strongly support the AFL drug policy and the need to counsel and treat players and we will support Michael in confronting this issue."

"But we also want to make clear that his actions at the the weekend will not be tolerated at this club and that is evident by the action we have taken today."

In a prepared statement, Johnson expressed remorse for his behaviour.

"I would like to apologise to the AFL, the AFL Players Association, the Fremantle Footy Club, my team mates, Fremantle supporters, my family and friends," Johnson said.

"I am very disappointed in my actions on the weekend and I am working through it with my legal team and the club.

"It has been a tough couple of days for me and my family. I would like to thank everyone out there who have sent their love and support."

"I really appreciate it. I know it is going to be a tough couple of weeks for me but hopefully I can come back to the footy club, become a better person, a better player and a better father to my children."

Johnson is due to face Perth Magistrates' Court on July 5.

Kirk announces retirement

May 19th 2010 02:57

SYDNEY co-captain Brett Kirk has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old said he knew it was the right decision.

"I'm someone who has played with my heart, led with my heart, and this is a decision that has come from the heart," Kirk said.

"The reason I'm announcing it now is because I started to have thoughts about it over the last week or two."

"I was resisting it, and it was causing me stress and pain, so I need to listen to my intuition."

Kirk was instrumental in the Swans winning the 2005 premiership but said his greatest legacy was not about on-field achievements.

"It's more about the impact and significance I've had on the club and people around it," he said.

"I'm most proud of being part of building a culture here, and helping our club gain respect in the wider football community, and I'm proud of who I am."

Sydney coach Paul Roos paid tribute to Kirk

"Brett Kirk is not only one of the greats of this football club and the game, but he is an incredible example to everyone about what can be achieved with determination, hard work and a never-say-die attitude," Roos said.

"To go from a player who not only battled to get on the Swans list, but was also almost finished as a player at the end of 2002, and then to end his career as possibly one of the top five players to ever play for the football club is an achievement of mind over matter."

"It's not only his legacy as a player that is extraordinary."

"Equally important is his enormous influence on the culture of this football club."

"Hopefully there will always be a little bit of Brett Kirk in the Sydney Swans Football Club."

Since coming off the Swans' rookie list in 1999, Kirk has played 225 games - including an ongoing streak of 184.

Kirk - who has been co-captain since 2005 - won the club's best-and-fairest award in their premiership year and again in 2007. He also earned All-Australian honours in 2004.

Jackson to miss three matches

May 18th 2010 10:25

RICHMOND midfielder Daniel Jackson will miss three matches after the Tigers failed to have his head-butting charge overturned at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old - who was cited for head-butting Hawthorn's Campbell Brown in the final term of Richmond's three-point loss at the MCG on Sunday - could have accepted a two-match ban with an early guilty plea.

But the Tigers argued that the contact made with Brown was too light to constitute a head-butt, and that Jackson's action was involuntary due to being bumped by Brown moments earlier.

The tribunal disagreed on both counts, meaning Jackson will miss matches against Essendon, Port Adelaide and St Kilda.

Johnson stood down

May 18th 2010 06:43

FREMANTLE utility Michael Johnson has been stood down until further notice by the Dockers after being questioned by police in the early hours of Sunday morning on a drug-related matter.

The 25-year-old - who is the subject of a police investigation after allegedly being caught in possession of a small quantity of cocaine - has been advised by police that he will be charged by summons at a later date.

A statement issued on Tuesday afternoon said that Johnson has been stood down by the club from all club activities, including training and playing at all levels.

Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said the Dockers were yet to reach a decision on what sanctions would be imposed on Johnson.

"In accordance with the protocols we have in place, we are still in the process of gathering all relevant information and doing so in a timely and appropriate manner," Rosich said.

"We are very disappointed that Michael placed himself in a situation that allowed these circumstances to arise."

"Due to the serious nature of the matter and an impending police charge, the club believes that standing Michael down was the appropriate course of action to take at this stage."

"The action taken reflects the serious nature of the situation at hand. It will also allow Michael to focus on all related legal issues and make that his priority."

"Michael is distressed by the turn of events and, in the best interests of his welfare, we will take the appropriate time to work through the situation with him and his legal representative."

"Michael informed the club of this matter in accordance with the required club protocols and has fully cooperated with police, the AFL and the club during their investigations."

"The AFL was advised on Sunday of this matter and will continue to be updated."

"We will make further comment when we are in a position to do so."

Jackson to front tribunal

May 18th 2010 03:51

RICHMOND midfielder Daniel Jackson will front the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night to contest his head-butting charge.

Jackson - who was offered a two-match ban for head-butting Hawthorn's Campbell Brown in the final term of the Tigers' heartbreaking three-point loss at the MCG on Sunday - will be risking a three-game suspension.

Carlton utility Jarrad Waite has accepted a two-match sanction for engaging in rough conduct against Port Adelaide's Jason Davenport.

Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne and Hawks skipper Sam Mitchell have accepted $900 fines for pulling the hair of Collingwood defender Harry O'Brien and Richmond youngster Ben Nason respectively while Melbourne's Matthew Warnock copped the same penalty for making negligent contact with a field umpire.

ESSENDON midfielder Jake Melksham is the round eight nominee for the NAB Rising Star award.

The 18-year-old received the nomination after gathering 14 possessions, three clearances, three tackles and kicking a goal in the Bombers' 12-point win over the St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Since making his debut in round three, Melksham has played five matches and is averaging 16 disposals per game.

Dons coach Matthew Knights said he has been impressed with Melksham's attitude and desire to improve.

"Jake's consistency has been really pleasing – whether it is while he is selected for Essendon or Bendigo," Knights said.

"He has also demonstrated a capacity to play in front of big crowds and still maintain his composure under pressure which is a great sign for any young footballer."

"We made a conscious effort to bring in some good young midfield talent in the last draft and it has been great to see Jake and Travis Colyer get a chance to experience AFL football so early in their career."

Melksham was taken by Essendon with pick 10 in last year's national draft following a best-on-ground performance for the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup Grand Final.

The AIS-AFL Academy graduate represented VIC Metro at the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships, averaging 18 possessions per match and ranking second overall for Vic Metro for score assists and for clearances behind number one draft pick Tom Scully.

THE Western Bulldogs have been dealt a double blow with classy forward Robert Murphy and skipper Brad Johnson ruled out for up to three weeks.

Murphy will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Monday night to remove a small cyst at the back of his patella tendon.

The Bulldogs expect the 27-year-old to miss two to three weeks.

Johnson experienced tightness in his Achilles tendon following a training session on Saturday and is expected to miss matches against North Melbourne, Essendon and Collingwood.

Crows suspend trio

May 17th 2010 09:08

ADELAIDE has suspended star midfielder Bernie Vince, experienced defender Graham Johncock and youngster Matthew Jaensch for one-match for a breach of 'training and preparation standards'.

The punishment was recommended by the leadership group and endorsed by senior coach Neil Craig and the selection committee.

All three players are eligible to play in the SANFL.

Johncock - who missed Saturday night's loss to North Melbourne due to a shoulder injury - will have his suspension held over until he is available for selection.

Hille in the clear

May 17th 2010 07:08

THE AFL match review panel has thrown out the match-day report laid against Essendon ruckman David Hille for engaging in rough conduct against St Kilda star Brendon Goddard during the first quarter of the Bombers' 12-point win at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The panel said contact was not made to the head or neck region and the force used was not deemed to be unreasonable or excessive.

It is the third time this season Hille has been cleared by the MRP.

Richmond midfielder Daniel Jackson is facing a two-match ban for head-butting Hawthorn's Campbell Brown during the final term of the Tigers' heartbreaking three-point loss at the MCG on Sunday.

Due to a poor record Jackson can't reduce his sanction with an early guilty plea.

He will be risking a three-game suspension if he elects to contest the charge at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Jackson's head-butt occurred shortly after Brown floored the Tiger with a bump.

The panel assessed the bump but took no further action after ruling that Brown bumped Jackson in the shoulder region.

Carlton utility Jarrad Waite can accept a two-game ban for engaging in rough conduct against Port Adelaide's Jason Davenport but will be risking a three-match suspension if he goes before the tribunal.

The match-day report against Saint Steven Baker for wrestling Essendon speedster Leroy Jetta was thrown out, the MRP deeming that contact was not vigorous or forceful.

Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne and Hawks skipper Sam Mitchell can accept $900 fines for pulling the hair of Collingwood defender Harry O'Brien and Tigers youngster Ben Nason respectively while Melbourne defender Matthew Warnock can accept the same sanction for making negligent contact with a field umpire.

Dons upset Saints

May 16th 2010 09:51

ESSENDON has upset St Kilda by 12 points at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Bombers' 14.9 (93) to 11.15 (81) victory was their second in as many matches against the Saints after they handed Ross Lyon's men their first loss of 2009 in round 20.

The Dons now have three wins on the board this season while St Kilda slips to 5-3 after their second successive loss.

Some off the gloss was taken off the win for Essendon with promising young key defender Cale Hooker suffering a hamstring injury in the second quarter while David Hille was reported for rough conduct against Brendon Goddard in the first term.

Hille didn't let having his name put in the book affect him, finishing with four goals while Patrick Ryder chimed in with three majors - including the sealer.

Veteran defender Dustin Fletcher continued his superb run of form while skipper Jobe Watson was influential with 25 possessions.

For the Saints, Nick Dal Santo bounced back from a disappointing performance against Carlton last Monday night with 32 disposals while Lenny Hayes (33) and Leigh Montagna (31) also won plenty of the football.

Michael Gardiner and Justin Koschitzke kicked three goals each.

HAWTHORN has kept its slim finals hopes alive with a thrilling three-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The result sees Hawthorn improve to 2-6 while the Tigers remain winless in 2010.

Mitchell collected 29 possessions in his return from a hamstring injury while Luke Hodge (27) was also prolific.

Cyril Rioli booted four goals - three of which came in the last quarter - while former Port Adelaide star Shaun Burgoyne finished with 20 disposals in his first game in the brown and gold.

GEELONG has moved into second spot on the AFL ladder with an 81-point demolition of Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Cats got the early jump before going on to record a 24.11 (155) to 10.14 (74) win.

The Lions have now lost their past four matches.

Roos hold off Crows

May 15th 2010 13:11

NORTH MELBOURNE has snapped an eight-game losing streak against Adelaide with a nine-point win at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Leading by 54 points at three-quarter time, the Kangaroos appeared to be on course for a percentage-boosting win but the Crows slammed on seven unanswered goals to cut the deficit to less than two straight kicks with 37 seconds left in the contest.

However it was too little too late as the Roos held on for a 12.12 (84) to 11.9 (75) victory.

It was North's fourth triumph of the season while Adelaide has just one win to its name after eight matches.

Kangaroos big man Todd Goldstein was dominant in the ruck with 41 hit-outs while skipper Brent Harvey (24 possessions, three goals), Andrew Swallow (29, two goals) and Daniel Wells (25) were also influential.

Brady Rawlings racked up a game-high 37 disposals from half-back while Michael Firrito also won plenty of the football.

Eagles down Demons

May 15th 2010 07:42

WEST COAST has recorded a rare win away from home, downing Melbourne by 29 points at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

Scores were level at the main break but the Eagles played with greater intent than the Demons in the second half and booted five goals to one to record a 10.15 (75) to 6.10 (46) victory.

It was just West Coast's second win away from Subiaco Oval in 25 attempts.

The result sees the Eagles improve to 3-5 - the same win-loss record as Melbourne.

Matt Priddis racked up a game-high 35 possessions while Dean Cox was also instrumental in the win with 25 disposals and 14 hit-outs.

Adam Selwood and Matt Rosa won plenty of the football while Mark LeCras was lively up forward but let himself down in front of goal, booting a wasteful 2.5.

For the Demons, skipper James McDonald (31 touches) and hard-running defender Jack Grimes (30) tried hard all day while 2008 number one draft pick Jack Watts showed some good signs, finishing with 15 possessions and five marks.

Magpies too good for Dockers

May 14th 2010 14:00

COLLINGWOOD has moved one game clear at the top of the AFL ladder with a 36-point victory over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Friday night.

The Magpies set up the win with a dominant third term before prevailing 20.13 (133) to 15.7 ((97).

For the third consecutive week the Pies had 13 individual goal-kickers - Travis Cloke the most effective with five majors.

Dane Swan (31 possessions), Alan Didak (25, three goals), Scott Pendlebury (27) and Ben Johnson (27) were also instrumental in the win

Aaron Sandilands was Fremantle's best with 25 disposals, two goals and a staggering 43 hit-outs but the Dockers midfielders failed to capitalise on his dominance, the Magpies winning the clearances 45-35.

Fremantle mature-age recruit Michael Barlow continued the impressive start to his career with 34 touches, 14 tackles and six inside 50's.

Both sides traded the first four goals of the contest before Collingwood took control.

The Magpies continually forced the Dockers into turnovers and punished them on the rebound with five unanswered goals - including two from Cloke - to open up a 31-point lead at the 29-minute mark.

A goal from Garrick Ibbotson reduced the Pies' advantage to 24 points at quarter-time.

Fremantle came out with a greater level of intensity in the second term and kicked three goals in a five-minute burst to close to within one straight kick.

Collingwood steadied with three of the next five majors - all three of the Magpies' goals coming from the goal-square - before Ryan Crowley goaled on the run to cut the deficit to 10 points at the main break.

The Magpies should have been further in front at half-time but they were wasteful in front of goal, booting six behinds for the term.

It was a sloppy start to the third quarter by both sides before Johnson converted a set shot at the seven-minute mark.

The Dockers got the almost immediate reply with Stephen Hill drilling one home from long range but it was all Collingwood from that moment on, Mick Malthouse's men piling on six of the last seven goals of the term with Cloke and Didak chipping in with two apiece to help their side to a match-winning 41-point lead at the final change.

MELBOURNE young gun James Frawley has signed a new four-year deal with the Demons which will see him remain in the red and blue until at least the end of 2014.

The 21-year-old defender - who is the nephew of former St Kilda captain Danny Frawley - has been one of Melbourne's best in the opening seven rounds of the season.

Frawley believes the future is bright at the Demons who have begun 2010 in promising fashion, winning three matches after managing a meagre total of seven victories in the past two years.

"The last few years have been pretty tough, but hopefully the times are looking up and it'll be good to be part of the young group and hopefully challenge for a premiership soon," Frawley said.

"It'll be good to stick with a few of these young boys and hopefully a few of them will get on board and sign, so we'll go forward together."

Melbourne list management general manager Tim Harrington said the new deal was a big show of confidence by both player and club.

"For James to have the confidence to commit to the club for four years and for the club to have the confidence to commit to James for four years is a pretty big thing - you don't do too many four-year deals," Harrington said.

"Given we see him as a mainstay of the backline for a long period of time, it was a pretty easy decision."

VENUE and TIME: Subiaco Oval, Friday May 14, 6:40pm AWST (8.40pm AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 20, Fremantle 8, Collingwood 12

LAST TIME: Collingwood 26.13 (169) d Fremantle 13.7 (85), Round 13, 2009 at the MCG.

RECENT HISTORY: Collingwood has won three of its past four matches against Fremantle but all of those wins came at the MCG.

FORM: Fremantle has begun the season with six wins from seven matches - the most recent of which was a maiden victory over Brisbane at the Gabba last Saturday night. The final margin should have been considerably greater than 13 points but the Dockers were incredibly wasteful in front of goal, booting 23 behinds. Collingwood’s attacking prowess has been on display in recent times with the Magpies recording scores of 120 points or more in their four-game winning streak. The Pies are the other side in the competition with a 6-1 record - their best start to a season since 1993. They are on top of the AFL ladder thanks to a percentage of 146.39.

MEDICAL ROOM: Fremantle welcomes back midfielder Garrick Ibbotson and promising young defender Alex Silvagni from ankle injuries but youngster Dylan Robertson (soreness) will miss. Veteran Des Headland (knee) is eight weeks away from resuming. For Collingwood, small forward Paul Medhurst will miss the clash against his old side due to a foot injury. Ruckman Josh Fraser (knee) and Brad Dick (shoulder) are out for at least another week while Sean Rusling (calf - one to two weeks), John McCarthy (hamstring - two to three weeks) and Anthony Corrie (knee - three to four weeks) are also on the sidelines.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Harry O’Brien vs. Matthew Pavlich

Pavlich has been instrumental in Fremantle’s stellar start to the season, averaging 20 possessions and booting 27 goals to lead the Coleman Medal race.

O’Brien looms as a likely candidate to match-up on the Dockers skipper as he has the tank to go with him when he is in the middle and also the ability to match him in the air when he is up forward.

Fremantle is a side that likes to attack through the corridor.

The Magpies will need to force them wide with relentless tackling pressure otherwise Pavlich will receive enough quality supply to have an influence on the outcome of the contest.

Ryan Crowley vs. Dane Swan

The last time these two sides met in round 13 last year Swan was damaging with a game-high 41 possessions, including eight inside 50’s.

The 26-year-old is currently in red-hot form having averaged 29.4 disposals in seven appearances and will need to be contained if the Dockers are going to restrict Collingwood’s multi-pronged attack.

Crowley is Fremantle’s number one midfield stopper and will be given the task of matching up on Swan in what will be a pivotal duel.

It is vital for the Dockers that Crowley is switched on defensively all night otherwise Swan will hurt them with his ability to win the football at the stoppages and set up scoring opportunities for his teammates with his clean use of the football.

Dale Thomas vs. Stephen Hill

Hill played a major role in the win over the Lions, racking up a team-high 32 disposals and delivering the football inside 50 on nine occasions.

The exciting 20-year-old is ranked sixth in the competition for inside 50’s per game with an average of 5.4.

Shutting down Hill will be a key for the Magpies if they are going to deny Fremantle’s forwards of quality ball.

Thomas - who is in career-best form having averaged 23.6 touches and a goal per game so far in 2010 - has the pace to go with Hill and will most likely match-up on the young Docker.

The Pies will need Thomas to push forward at every available opportunity and be a contributor on the scoreboard as it will force Hill to be accountable which in turn will help limit his impact on the contest as a line-breaking midfielder who uses the football well.

Chris Tarrant vs. John Anthony

Anthony is in the Collingwood side for the first time since round two and will be keen to impress.

The 22-year-old performed well in the clash against Fremantle last year, booting four goals.

However, replicating that performance won’t be an easy task as he will be coming up against Tarrant who is arguably in All-Australian form having conceded just seven goals in six matches.

Anthony will need to get his hands on the football and convert early as he is very much a confidence player.

VERDICT: Fremantle has won its past seven matches at Subiaco Oval but they are coming off a six-day break after the longest trip in AFL football. In what promises to be a high-intensity contest from the outset, expect Collingwood to finish the stronger of the two sides. Magpies by 19 points.

Watson re-signs with Bombers

May 12th 2010 01:28

ESSENDON skipper Jobe Watson has signed a new three-year deal with the Bombers which will tie him to the club until at least the end of 2013.

The 25-year-old - who is the son of Dons legend Tim - said the decision to re-sign was an obvious one.

"It was really just a case of waiting for the right time to get offered a new contract and then get the deal done and it is obviously really pleasing to get it done so early," Watson said.

"It will hopefully mean I will be a one-club player so I can be here and grow with this team.”

"It is nice to have a family connection with the club and it obviously means a lot to my family and it is an important thing for the fans as well."

The length of the new deal allows Watson - who is in his first year as captain - to continue to develop alongside a young team which he believes should be hitting its straps in the next few years.

"It is really hard to know when your premiership window is because there are so many variables, but the length of the contract means I will be at this club with the current group players and we will have played a fair bit of footy together over the next three years," he said.

"You can never really know when you are going to have an opportunity but hopefully we can experience it together in the next few years."

Mumford suspended for two matches

May 11th 2010 09:41

SYDNEY ruckman Shane Mumford has been suspended for two matches by the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night for his tackle on former Geelong teammate Gary Ablett which left the reigning Brownlow medallist with 'mild visual disturbance' and a headache.

Mumford was risking a three-game ban by contesting the rough conduct charge but escaped with a two-match suspension after the tribunal downgraded his conduct from reckless to negligent.

The loss of the 23-year-old is a significant blow for the Swans given that their other ruck recruit in Mark Seaby is out for up to three months with an ankle injury.

Drummond undergoes LARS surgery

May 11th 2010 07:48

BRISBANE defender Josh Drummond has undergone the radical LARS surgery on his knee in a bid to play a role in the Lions' 2010 campaign.

Drummond ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during last Saturday night's loss to Fremantle at the Gabba.

Club surgeon Jim Fardoulys performed the Ligament Augmentation and Resconstruction System surgery on Tuesday afternoon.

The procedure - which involves the use of synthetic fibres to repair the knee - has been successfully used by Sydney's Nick Malceski and Port Adelaide midfielder David Rodan.

Drummond will commence his rehabilitation program immediately.

Anthony out for three months

May 11th 2010 06:00

NORTH MELBOURNE has been dealt a major blow with midfielder Liam Anthony ruled out for three months after scans revealed he would require a full shoulder reconstruction.

The 22-year-old injured his left shoulder when he landed heavily after being crunched by Collingwood forward Travis Cloke in a marking contest during third quarter of the Kangaroos' 66-point loss at the MCG last Saturday night.

Anthony will undergo surgery on Wednesday.

Since making his debut in round 13 last year, Anthony has proven himself to be a prolific ball-winner.

He averaged 25.6 possessions in ten appearances in 2009 and begun this season in impressive fashion, averaging 23 disposals in seven games.

Meanwhile, Roos youngster Ben Ross will undergo two operations - one on his pubic bone - and another on his hip - to repair an ongoing groin complaint.

It is unknown how long Ross will be sidelined.

Cooney signs new deal with Dogs

May 11th 2010 03:36

STAR Western Bulldogs midfielder Adam Cooney has signed a new three-year deal with the Bulldogs which will see him remain at Whitten Oval until at least the end of 2013.

The 2008 Brownlow medallist - who confirmed on Tuesday his management had been contacted by the Gold Coast - was delighted to have secured his future with the Dogs.

"My wife's pretty settled over here and I've got family over here and the kids go to school - everyone's pretty happy. I've got a house over here now so I'm settled in pretty well to the Melbourne lifestyle," Cooney said.

"I think I'll be 27 or 28 coming out of contract, so 10 years at the club which is fantastic."

"Hopefully I will have another couple of years left after that."

Taken with pick one in the 2003 national draft, Cooney has played 142 games since making his debut in round one, 2004.

Mumford to face tribunal

May 11th 2010 03:10

SYDNEY ruckman Shane Mumford will face the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night to contest a rough conduct charge.

Mumford - who could have accepted a two-match suspension for his crude tackle on former Geelong teammate Gary Ablett during the last quarter of Sunday's clash at Skilled Stadium - will be risking a three-game ban.

Hawthorn premiership midfielder Chance Bateman will miss three matches for his bump on West Coast youngster Brad Sheppard while Richmond defender Dean Polo will have a one-week stint on the sidelines for his strike on Adelaide's Richard Douglas.

Brisbane ruckman Matthew Leuenberger has accepted a $900 fine for making negligent contact with a field umpire.

Scully earns nomination

May 11th 2010 02:09

MELBOURNE midfielder Tom Scully has been rewarded for his stellar performance against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG last Friday night with the round seven nomination for the NAB Rising Star award.

Scully - who turns 19 on Saturday - racked up a game-high 39 possessions - including seven clearances, five tackles and one goal in wet conditions.

Demons coach Dean Bailey said Scully's effort reflected his meticulous preparation and fantastic endurance.

"Tom's professionalism at such a young age is a credit to him. His strong work ethic has seen him make a successful transition to AFL football," Bailey said.

"His effort Friday night in difficult conditions is testament to his skill level. All Melbourne fans can look forward to his further development in the years to come."

Taken by Melbourne with the number one pick in the 2009 national draft, Scully made his debut in round one and has played every match this season for an average of 21 disposals per match.

He is the second Demon to be nominated after Jack Trengove in round five.

An impressive junior career saw Scully selected in the Under-18 All-Australian side twice. He captained the team in 2009.

Originally from the Narre Warren Junior Football Club, Scully played for the Dandenong Stingrays and Haileybury College.

The result sees Brett Ratten's men move into the top eight with a 4-3 win-loss record.

Jeff Garlett helped set up the win with four first-half goals while fellow small forward Eddie Betts finished with five majors, including four in the final stanza.

Jarrad Waite played his best game of the season, booting four goals - three of which came in the first quarter.

Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Carrazzo did superb blanketing jobs on Sam Fisher and Nick Dal Santo, restricting the key St Kilda pair to just six and 12 possessions respectively.

Skipper Chris Judd was influential, defender Jordan Russell continued his career-best form with a game-high 35 disposals while Michael Jamison held Justin Koschitzke goalless.

For the Saints, acting captain Lenny Hayes - who went head-to-head with Judd - tried hard all night - finishing with 29 touches while Brendon Goddard (26) also battled hard.

Bateman hit with three-match ban

May 10th 2010 07:56

HAWTHORN premiership midfielder Chance Bateman has been hit with a three-match ban by the AFL match review panel for engaging in rough conduct against West Coast youngster Brad Sheppard.

Bateman's bump on Sheppard was assessed as reckless conduct, medium impact and high contact, which equated to 325 demerit points and a three-game suspension.

Due to a poor record Bateman can't reduce his sanction with an early guilty plea.

Sydney ruckman Shane Mumford can accept a two-match ban for his crude tackle on former Geelong teammate Gary Ablett during the last quarter of Sunday's clash at Skilled Stadium but will be risking a three-game suspension if he elects to contest the rough conduct charge at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Richmond defender Dean Polo has been handed a two-match for his strike on Adelaide's Richard Douglas but his clean record means he will have just a one-week stint on the sidelines if he enters a guilty plea.

The match-day report laid against Cats midfielder James Kelly for rough conduct against Swan Kieran Jack was thrown out, the panel ruling that Kelly was still contesting the ball and not aware that play had been called to a halt.

An incident North Melbourne's Daniel Wells and Collingwood's Luke Ball was looked at but no further action was taken after it was deemed that no forceful contact was made to the head/neck region.

The MRP also assessed a clash between the Western Bulldogs' Jarrod Harbrow and Melbourne's Jamie Bennell but didn't take it any further after ruling that contact was made with an open hand as Harbrow went to smother a handball.

Two incidents involving Adelaide on-baller Bernie Vince were given the all-clear, the panel deeming that contact made by Richmond duo Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin to Vince was below that required to constitute a reportable offence.

Crow Scott Thompson was cleared over a tackle on Riewoldt during the final term of Sunday's match at AAMI Stadium, the MRP saying the former Demon began a tackling motion but did not continue with his tackle once Riewoldt disposed of the ball.

Brisbane ruckman Matthew Leuenberger has been charged with making negligent contact with a field umpire and can accept a $900 fine.

Crows dispose of Tigers

May 9th 2010 10:28

ADELAIDE has broken through for its first win of the season, disposing of Richmond by 50 points at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

Scores were level when Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt kicked his second goal at the two-minute mark of the final term but it was one-way traffic from that moment on as the Crows banged on eight unanswered goals to prevail 15.14 (104) to 7.12 (54).

The result leaves Richmond as the only winless side in the competition.

Adelaide big man Ivan Maric was dominant in the ruck with 37 hit-outs while skipper Simon Goodwin (30 possessions), Andrew McLeod (19, seven inside 50's and two goals) were also damaging.

Kurt Tippett booted four goals while Jason Porplyzia chimed in with three majors.

For the Tigers, Brett Deledio (24 disposals), Shane Edwards (23) and Kelvin Moore (23) battled hard.

May 9th 2010 06:44

GEELONG has continued its dominance over Sydney with a crushing 67-point win at Skilled Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Cats broke the game open with a five-goal-to-two third quarter before romping to a 19.12 (126) to 9.5 (59) victory.

It was Geelong's seventh straight win over the Swans.

The result was also the Cats' fifth victory of the season and 19th on the trot at the Cattery.

The loss is a major reality check for Sydney who headed into the clash on a five-match winning streak.

Gary Ablett was best afield with 38 possessions, ten clearances, eight inside 50's and two goals while mature-age recruit James Podsiadly booted five majors at Skilled Stadium for the third time.

Paul Chapman (27 disposals, three goals) and Joel Selwood (26) were also impressive while Travis Varcoe managed three goals.

Matthew Scarlett was superb in his return from a back injury, restricting Swans spearhead Daniel Bradshaw to just one goal while Harry Taylor kept Adam Goodes quiet.

For Sydney, rebounding defenders Tadhg Kennelly (25 touches) and Rhyce Shaw (20) tried hard all day while Heath Grundy held Cameron Mooney goalless.

Dockers end Gabba hoodoo

May 8th 2010 13:45

FREMANTLE has recorded its first ever win over Brisbane at the Gabba, defeating the Lions by 13 points on Saturday night.

Leading by 27 points at the nine-minute mark of the final term, the Dockers appeared to be on course for an easy win but Brisbane lifted and kicked four unanswered goals to reduce the deficit to just one straight kick.

Cheynee Stiller had the chance to level the scores with three minutes remaining in the contest but his set shot went out on the full.

It proved to be a costly miss with Fremantle getting the ball to Chris Mayne who ran into an open goal to seal a deserved 15.23 (113) to 15.10 (100) win.

It was the Dockers' sixth win of the season while the Lions have now lost three straight matches after starting their campaign with four victories.

And to make matters worse for Brisbane, defender Josh Drummond and star utility Jared Brennan suffered knee and ankle injuries respectively in the third quarter.

Fremantle youngster Stephen Hill showed his class with 32 possessions while David Mundy (29) was also damaging.

Matthew Pavlich continued his impressive run form with 26 disposals, nine marks and three goals. The Dockers skipper could have easily finished the night with a big haul but he let himself down in front of goal, booting four behinds.

Luke McPharlin kept Lions captain Jonathan Brown to only one goal while Chris Tarrant did a good job on Brendan Fevola with the former Blue managing just three majors.

Simon Black was Brisbane's best with 36 touches and two goals while Michael Rischitelli (28) tried hard all night.

Brady Rawlings and Brent Harvey battled hard for North, collecting 33 and 31 touches respectively while Lindsay Thomas booted three goals.

Eagles account for Hawks

May 8th 2010 09:29

WEST COAST has registered its second win of the season, accounting for Hawthorn by eight points at Subiaco Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles kicked the first three goals of the final stanza to open up a 25-point lead before withstanding a Jarryd Roughead led fight-back to post a 15.12 (102) to 14.10 (94) victory.

Roughead booted four of his six goals in the last quarter but his efforts were in vain as the Hawks slumped to 1-6.

Josh Kennedy starred for West Coast with a career-best six majors - five of which came in the first half - while Mark LeCras chimed in with four goals.

Nic Naitanui (19 possessions, 23 hit-outs and seven clearances) and Dean Cox (16 disposals, 35 hit-outs and one goal) were also influential while Patrick McGinnity kept Cyril Rioli quiet.

For Hawthorn, Jordan Lewis - who was a late replacement for Lance Franklin - made the most of his reprieve - racking up 31 touches while Grant Birchall (20, two goals) and acting captain Luke Hodge (22) battled hard.

Port has now won six consecutive matches against the Dons and 12 of the last 13.

It was the Power's fifth victory of 2010 while Essendon slumps to 2-5.

Danyle Pearce was instrumental in the win with 29 possessions and two goals in what was his 100th game while Kane Cornes also collected 29 disposals.

Brett Ebert, Daniel Motlop and Justin Westhoff booted three goals apiece.

For the Bombers, skipper Jobe Watson led from the front with 31 touches, Angus Monfries (25, three goals) was also impressive while Scott Gumbleton managed three majors.

Dogs pip Dees

May 7th 2010 12:50

THE Western Bulldogs have recorded a thrilling four-point win over Melbourne in wet conditions at the MCG on Friday night.

Trailing by nine points with just four minutes left in the contest, the Bulldogs looked set to suffer their second loss in as many weeks after going down to St Kilda last Friday night but they lifted and kicked the the last two goals of the night to prevail 10.10 (70) to 9.12 (66).

It was the Dogs' fourth win of the season while the Demons slip to 3-4.

Shaun Higgins (32 possessions) and Daniel Giansiracusa (31) were busy contributors for the Bulldogs while late inclusion Josh Hill chipped in with two valuable goals.

For Melbourne, number one draft pick Tom Scully starred with a game-high 39 disposals while Nathan Jones (31) and youngster Jack Trengrove (26) were also proliifc in the middle.

Matthew Bate was lively up forward with three goals while Matthew Warnock did a superb blanketing job on Barry Hall, keeping the star Dogs recruit goalless.

The Dees had the same number of entries inside 50 as the Bulldogs in the opening stanza but they failed to capitalise, managing six behinds for the quarter.

The Dogs made more of their opportunities, booting three goals to go into the first change with a 14-point lead.

The margin blew out to 22 points early in the second term before Aaron Davey kicked the Demons' first goal of the game at the 13-minute mark.

Melbourne looked the better of the two sides for the rest of the quarter and went into the main break trailing by just eight points after Jamie Bennell booted a brilliant banana goal on the run.

As they did in the first two quarters, the Dogs managed a goal in the opening minute of the third quarter before the Demons responded with back majors to close to within one point.

Jason Akermanis halted Melbourne's momentum with a classy snap after dispossessing Scully before Hill kicked his second.

It appeared as if the Bulldogs would go into three-quarter time with a handy break but late goals from Scully and Jones reduced the Dogs' advantage to just three points heading into the final change.

The Demons got the crucial first goal of the final stanza through Bate to hit the front for the first time in the match.

When Danny Hughes booted his first goal in AFL football it seemed as if Melbourne would record an upset win.

But Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade's decision to swing Brian Lake forward paid dividends with the full-back kicking a goal before Ryan Griffen snapped truly from an acute angle to give the Dogs the lead with less than two minutes left on the clock.

VENUE and TIME: MCG, Friday 7 May, 7.40pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 152: Melbourne 83, Bulldogs 68, Drawn 1

LAST TIME: Western Bulldogs 15.14 (104) d Melbourne 15.7 (97) at MCG, Round 8, 2009

RECENT HISTORY: The Western Bulldogs have won their past three matches against Melbourne.

FORM: Melbourne’s three-game winning run came to an end when they went down to North Melbourne by 26 points at Etihad Stadium last Saturday. The Bulldogs looked set to record their first win over a top-eight in 2010 last Friday night before St Kilda booted three late goals to get up by three points. Like the Demons, the Dogs have a 3-3 record.

MEDICAL ROOM: Melbourne was dealt a major blow during the week with promising young forward Ricky Petterd ruled out for up to four months with a dislocated shoulder. Cale Morton is at least another week away from returning from a knee injury while livewire Liam Jurrah (shoulder) is two months away from playing. For the Dogs, key midfielder Matthew Boyd returns from a hand injury but skipper Brad Johnson and Nathan Eagleton will miss with the clash with the Demons due to groin and leg injuries respectively. Tagger Liam Picken (ankle - three to four weeks) and Callan Ward (groin - four weeks) remain on the sidelines.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Dylan Addison vs. Aaron Davey

Davey leads Melbourne for kicks so far this season with a total of 89.

Limiting the influence of the 26-year-old in the middle will be a key for the Bulldogs if they are going to starve Melbourne’s forwards of quality supply.

Addison has been given some big tagging jobs in the absence of the injured Picken and will most likely be given first crack at the Demons star.

The young Bulldog will need to apply plenty of body pressure from the outset in order to put Davey off his game.

Clint Bartram vs. Adam Cooney

Cooney has been one of the Dogs’ most consistent performers so far this year, averaging 27 disposals per match.

The 2008 Brownlow medallist is also ranked third in the AFL for total clearances and fourth for inside 50’s.

Bartram - who kept Kangaroos skipper Brent Harvey to just 17 touches last weekend - will match-up on Cooney in what will be a pivotal duel.

It is vital for the Demons that Bartram is switched on defensively all night and doesn’t give Cooney any time or space at the stoppages otherwise he will hurt them with his ability to break the lines and set up scoring opportunities for his teammates with his clean use of the football.

Brian Lake vs. Brad Green

Green has been Melbourne’s most productive forward so far this season, booting 15 goals in six games.

The Demons will need him to continue his good run of form if they are going to have any hope of kicking a big enough score to overcome the Dogs.

However, Green’s task won’t be an easy one as he will most likely be matched up by one of the in-form defenders in the competition in Lake.

Not only is Lake a frugal defender but he also wins plenty of the football.

Melbourne will need to be precise with their delivery inside 50 otherwise Lake - who has averaged 19 possessions per game so far this year - will help set up the Bulldogs’ attacking forays.

Matthew Warnock vs. Barry Hall

Former Sydney premiership skipper Hall looms as the main danger man for Melbourne given that he has booted 23 goals in his past six matches against the Demons.

Warnock has shown some good signs down back so far this season and will line-up on Hall.

Melbourne laid just 58 tackles against the Roos - which was their lowest tackle count for the year.

The Dees will need to lift their intensity otherwise the highly skilled Bulldogs midfield will provide Hall with silver service.

VERDICT: This is a must-win match for the Western Bulldogs if they are serious about being a top-four contender. Melbourne is undoubtedly a side on the rise but the Bulldogs have class on every line and will most likely come out breathing fire after the disappointing loss to the Saints. Bulldogs by 41 points.

Star trio re-sign with Hawks

May 6th 2010 01:30

STAR Hawthorn trio Sam Mitchell, Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead have put themselves beyond the reach of the Gold Coast by signing new deals with the Hawks.

Premiership skipper Mitchell will remain at the club until at least the end of 2012 after extending his contract for two years while gun forwards Franklin and Roughead have signed three and four year deals respectively.

Mitchell - who won the AFL Rising Star award in 2003 - and is a two-time Peter Crimmins Medallist - said he had no hesitation in re-committing to the Hawks.

"As a team, we’re looking forward to building on past success and I’m glad to have my place on the journey secured for the next couple of years," Mitchell said.

Franklin, the 2008 Coleman Medallist, said he never planned on leaving the club.

"My future at Hawthorn was never in doubt," Franklin said.

"I love playing footy with my mates and, despite a rough patch right now, I have enjoyed every part of my journey with the Hawks so far."

Roughead - who was taken three spots ahead of Franklin in the 2004 national draft at pick two - was delighted to be remaining in the brown and gold.

"We have a great team, with a mix of promising youngsters and experienced senior players, and I’m thrilled to be one of three players today to commit for the long-term," Roughead said.

"There is a belief within our team that we can achieve further success if we remain a committed, stable and cohesive group and I’m pleased that my contract extension will ensure I play my role within that team for many years to come."

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said the re-signings sent a positive message to the rest of the playing group.

"These three young men have shown great commitment to the club and a desire to build upon our past achievements,” Clarkson said.

"The club is none too pleased with our current form, but this is another indication that we are all committed to putting things right as we continue this journey that we all started together some time ago."

The 1-5 Hawks will clash with fellow struggler West Coast at Subiaco Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Maguire to miss Dockers clash

May 5th 2010 10:58

BRISBANE LIONS defender Matt Maguire will miss Saturday night's clash against Fremantle at the Gabba after unsuccessfully challenging his rough conduct charge on Wednesday night.

Maguire was cited on a charge of engaging in rough conduct following his head clash with Sydney midfielder Jude Bolton during the first quarter of last Saturday night's match at the SCG.

The 25-year-old was trying to prevent Bolton - who was streaming towards goal - from scoring by putting his body in front of the Swan.

Maguire argued via video link that after their legs collided, Bolton caused their heads to bang together by pushing his head forward as part of his kicking motion.

But the AFL Tribunal ruled that Maguire's action in running in and initiating contact was the main cause of the head clash.

In addition to the one-match ban, the former Saint will have 68.75 demerit points hanging over his head.

Maguire would have been suspended for two games if not for his five-year good record.

He would still have been banned for one match had he entered an early guilty plea but he would have received fewer carryover points.

Maguire underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a depressed fracture of the cheekbone which was sustained in the clash with Bolton but was still a strong chance to play against the Dockers had he been found not guilty by the tribunal.

AFL suspends Primus

May 5th 2010 07:30

THE AFL has suspended Port Adelaide assistant coach Matthew Primus for two matches for betting on a NAB Cup game last year.

Primus - who placed a $20 multi-bet which included the 2009 NAB Cup semi-final between Geelong and Carlton - will not be allowed to attend or have any coaching role in the Power's games against Essendon and Carlton.

The Western Bulldogs, a goal umpire, two interchange stewards and a timekeeper have also been sanctioned by the AFL in relation to betting on matches.

Bulldogs club director Geoff Walsh was found to have placed five bets between December 2009 and February 2010 totalling $50.

The Dogs were fined $7500 because they hadn't briefed Walsh - who was only appointed to the club's board last December - on the league's rules regarding gambling on matches.

When Walsh became aware that he had breached the betting regulations he immediately informed the AFL.

Goal umpire Chris Appleton has been suspended for the remainder of the season for placing bets totalling $60 on last year's grand final.

Appleton did not officiate in the match and placed the bets on behalf of a friend while watching the game at a hotel.

Interchange steward Wayne Siekman has been stood down for the rest of the season after it was found that he placed 13 bets during the 2009 season, covering 24 matches - one of which he officiated in.

Fellow interchange steward John Wise has also been suspended for the rest of the season for placing four bets totalling $9.

Wise - who officiated in two of the games he was found to have bet on - told the league he placed the bets on behalf of his wife which she confirmed.

Timekeeper Matthew Hollington has been hit with a five-week ban for placing a $5 bet last year when he was a trainee timekeeper and not officiating.

The punishments follow an investigation conducted by AFL integrity manager Brett Clothier in which betting records were examined.

The league was able to access the betting records due to information sharing agreements struck with all major bookmakers more than 12 months ago.

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said the officials would be welcomed back following their suspensions.

"We do not believe any of them deliberately set out to break the rules," Anderson said.

"If we did, termination of their employment would result."

"However all of them accept that they have made a grave mistake and as AFL Officials must be held to a very high standard in this area."

Primus in hot water over bet

May 4th 2010 10:46

PORT ADELAIDE assistant coach Matthew Primus is in hot water over a bet made on a NAB Cup match last year.

An investigation conducted by the AFL and the Power found that Primus placed a $20 multi-bet on a NAB Cup semi-final match between Geelong and Carlton and two English Premier League matches.

"I take full responsibility for the placing of the bet," Primus said in a media statement on Tuesday night.

"It was not my intention to bet on an AFL game, but I am well aware of the AFL rules and will accept any sanction imposed."

Port football operations manager Peter Rohde said the club would liaise with the AFL in relation to an appropriate punishment for Primus.

Welsh to miss four matches

May 4th 2010 10:27

ESSENDON vice-captain Andrew Welsh will miss four matches after an unsuccessful trip to the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Welsh plead guilty to kneeing Hawthorn's Xavier Ellis but attempted to have the misconduct charge downgraded from reckless to intentional - which would have resulted in just a two-game suspension.

But the tribunal upheld the match review panel's decision, meaning the Bombers midfielder will miss matches against Port Adelaide, St Kilda, Richmond and the Western Bulldogs.

Brisbane defender Matt Maguire will face the tribunal on Wednesday evening to contest a rough conduct charge against Sydney on-baller Jude Bolton.

Masten out for up to six weeks

May 4th 2010 08:23

WEST COAST midfielder Chris Masten won't require surgery on his injured knee but will still be sidelined for up to six weeks.

The 21-year-old injured his right knee when his leg became caught under Fremantle's Adam McPhee during the second quarter of the Eagles' 38-point loss last Sunday.

Masten revealed the results of scans on West Coast's official website on Tuesday.

"I have damaged the lateral ligament, which means I will be out for only 5-6 weeks," Masten said.

"That’s good news ... relatively speaking."

The young Eagle has his knee in a brace and won't be able to run for three to four weeks.

Welsh, Maguire to contest

May 4th 2010 05:13

ESSENDON midfielder Andrew Welsh and Brisbane defender Matt Maguire have elected to contest the charges laid against them by the AFL match review panel.

Welsh - who was offered a three-match ban for kneeing Hawthorn's Xavier Ellis in the groin during the third term of last Saturday night's match at the MCG - will be risking a four-game suspension when he faces the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Maguire will front the tribunal on Wednesday evening to challenge a level two rough conduct charge against Sydney Swans on-baller Jude Bolton.

Due to an existing five-year good record Maguire's sanction won't be increased beyond one match if he is found guilty.

Bolton has accepted a reprimand and 93.75 demerit points towards his future record for making forceful front-on contact to Lion Joel Patfull.

West Coast veteran Andrew Embley has accepted a two-game ban for his bump on Fremantle young gun Rhys Palmer.

Melbourne skipper James McDonald has accepted a reprimand and 70.31 points towards his future record for striking North's Andrew Swallow.

Eagles midfielder Matt Priddis has accepted a $900 fine for making negligent contact with an umpire while teammate Adam Selwood and Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne have accepted $1800 and $900 fines respectively for wrestling.

ESSENDON young gun Michael Hurley has signed a new two-year deal with the Bombers which will see him remain at Windy Hill until at least the end of 2012.

The 19-year-old was linked to the Gold Coast franchise which is due to enter the AFL next year but he turned his back on a potential multi-million dollar contract by committing to the Dons.

Coach Matthew Knights was delighted that Hurley had decided to stay with the club.

"We've got a really great person on our hands in Michael Hurley," Knights said.

"He's really enjoying the culture and the program and the Essendon Football Club full stop, so it's great to have him on board long-term."

"We're glad that he's with us and I think that he's glad that Essendon Football Club is with him."

Hurley booted four goals in last Saturday night's 43-point win over Hawthorn at the MCG but is no certainty to face Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon after suffering a knock to his knee early against the Hawks.

The Essendon forward - who was restricted to modified drills at training on Tuesday - will be given until late in the week to prove his fitness.

Meanwhile, Bombers midfielder Ricky Dyson will miss four to eight weeks with a knee injury sustained against Hawthorn.

Major injury blow for Petterd

May 4th 2010 02:03

MELBOURNE forward Ricky Petterd will be sidelined for up to four months due to a shoulder injury.

The promising 21-year-old - who is the Demons' second leading goal-kicker in 2010 with 12 goals in six matches - dislocated his right shoulder in the fourth quarter of the club's loss to North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium last Saturday.

He will undergo surgery sometime this week to repair what is believed to be significant damage to the cartilage rim in the shoulder joint.

Melbourne coach Dean Bailey said the injury was a disappointing setback for Petterd.

"It's disappointing for Rick because he was just starting to stamp himself, starting to become a real regular performer for us in the forward line and a goalkicker."

"We're going to miss his talent and his ability to kick goals for the next period of time."

GEELONG has suffered a massive blow with number one ruckman Brad Ottens ruled out for up to eight weeks after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his foot.

Cats coach Mark Thompson revealed the news on Tuesday morning when asked about the loss of Mark Seaby for Sydney - the reigning premiers' opponent this weekend.

"It's certainly a loss for them, but unfortunately Brad Ottens is injured too and will likely miss six or eight weeks of football," Thompson said.

"A stress reaction ... it's a hotspot in his foot, so he'll be out for a while."

"We're going to miss Brad and they're going to miss Seaby, so it's (Mark) Blake against (former Cat Shane) Mumford - there you go. That should be a great contest."

Banfield receives nomination

May 4th 2010 00:57

BRISBANE forward Todd Banfield is the round six nominee for the NAB Rising Star award.

The 19-year-old was one of the Lions' best in the loss to Sydney at the SCG last Saturday night with 15 possessions, four marks, five tackles and a career-high three goals.

Since making his debut in round one, Banfield has been a valuable contributor - booting nine goals in six matches and applying plenty of forward pressure.

"Todd has the ability to turn up in contests. Even when you think he's not in the contest, he has that turn of speed to get himself back involved," Brisbane coach Michael Voss said.

"The pressure he has been able to provide inside our forward 50 has been enormous."

"Todd has been very valuable for us. He had a quiet game last week, but has bounced back really well. For a young player to do that - it's a real credit to him."

Recruited from WAFL side Swan Districts with pick 41 in the 2008 national draft, Banfield spent last year with the Lions Reserves in the QAFL.

He is the third former Swan Districts player to receive a nomination in 2010 after Carlton's Chris Yarran and West Coast's Nic Naitanui were nominated in rounds one and four respectively.

Power under investigation

May 3rd 2010 10:08

PORT ADELAIDE are under AFL investigation over a $20 bet made on a 2009 NAB Cup semi-final.

The wager involves a multi-bet involving the pre-season match - which did not involve the Power - and two English Premier League matches.

Port football manager Peter Rohde said in a statement both the club and the AFL were investigating the source of the bet.

Rohde said the bet had not been traced to any individual, but it was hoped the investigation would be completed by the end of the week.

AFL players and coaches are prohibited from betting on AFL matches regardless of whether their team involved.

Embley facing two-match ban

May 3rd 2010 08:47

WEST COAST veteran Andrew Embley is facing at least a two-match ban for his bump on Fremantle young gun Rhys Palmer during the first quarter of Sunday's western derby.

The match review panel assessed the incident as reckless conduct, medium contact and high contact, which equated to 400 points and a four-game suspension.

But Embley can reduce his sanction to just two matches with an early guilty plea due to his existing five-year good record.

Essendon midfielder Andrew Welsh was hit with a three-match ban for kneeing Hawthorn's Xavier Ellis in the groin during the third term of Saturday night's match at the MCG.

Welsh will be risking a four-match suspension if he takes his case to the AFL Tribunal.

Welsh's teammate David Hille had his report of engaging in rough conduct against Hawk Clinton Young thrown out, the panel ruling that the Bombers ruckman had slowed down to minimise the contact and reduce the impact.

Dons veteran Dustin Fletcher was looked at over a clash with Ellis but was given the all-clear.

Brisbane defender Matt Maguire can accept a one-game ban for engaging in rough conduct against Sydney Swans on-baller Jude Bolton.

Bolton faces a one-match suspension for making forceful contact from front-on against Lion Joel Patfull but he can escape with a reprimand and 93.75 demerit points towards his future record with an early guilty plea.

Melbourne captain James McDonald was charged with striking North's Andrew Swallow but due to not being suspended in the past five years he can accept a reprimand and 70.31 points.

West Coast midfielder Matt Priddis can accept a $900 fine for making negligent contact with an umpire while teammate Adam Selwood and Dockers small forward Hayden Ballanytne can accept $1800 and $900 fines respectively for wrestling each other.

Richmond pair Daniel Jackson and Dean Polo were looked at over clashes involving Geelong duo Steve Johnson and Paul Chapman but no further action was taken.

LADDER leaders Sydney have been dealt a major blow with ruck recruit Mark Seaby ruled out for up to three months with an ankle injury.

The former Eagle sustained the injury in the opening minute of the Swans' 20-point win over Brisbane at the SCG on Saturday night.

He will undergo surgery on Tuesday and be on the sidelines for 10 to 12 weeks.

Sydney coach Paul Roos said either young forward Jesse White or Canadian Mike Pyke would support Shane Mumford in the ruck in the clash against Geelong at Skilled Stadium on Sunday.

Meanwhile, promising youngster Daniel Hannenbery (dislocated shoulder) is rated a 50-50 chance to play against the Cats while Jude Bolton (concussion), Jarred Moore (leg) and Ted Richards (leg) are expected to be available.

It was Fremantle's fifth victory of 2010 and sixth straight over the Eagles.

For West Coast, the result sees them slip to 1-5 - and to make matters worse for the Eagles - promising young midfielder Chris Masten suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the second quarter - while Andrew Embley was reported for his bump on Rhys Palmer in the opening stanza.

Dockers mature-age recruit Michael Barlow earned the Ross Glendinning medal for his 25-possession performance while Paul Duffield (24) and David Mundy (21) were also influential.

Dons demolish Hawks

May 1st 2010 12:50

ESSENDON has bounced back from a 10-goal loss to Collingwood on Anzac Day with a 43-point demolition of Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Bombers led at every change and kicked 4.7 while keeping the Hawks scoreless in the last quarter to record a 15.16 (106) to 9.9 (63) victory.

It was the Dons' second win of the season while Hawthorn slips to 1-5.

Highlighting Essendon's commitment to the contest was the fact that they laid a staggering 107 tackles and won the contested possession count 127-107.

Nathan Lovett-Murray racked up a game-high 31 possessions and was well supported by Brent Stanton (30), Jason Winderlich (28), skipper Jobe Watson (28) - in his 100th match - and Brent Prismall (28).

It was Port's fourth win of 2010 while the Crows are winless after six rounds.

Robbie Gray earned the Showdown Medal for his 20-possesion, five-goal performance. The 22-year-old could have finished with a bigger haul but he booted four behinds.

Roos too good for Dees

May 1st 2010 08:02

NORTH MELBOURNE has ended Melbourne's three-match winning streak with a 26-point win at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Kangaroos led by 46 points at the five-minute mark of the third term but the Demons lifted their rating and slammed on the last six goals of the quarter to reduce the deficit to just 14 points at the final change.

But any hopes the Dees had of pulling off a come-from-behind win were quickly snuffed out by the Roos with a Liam Anthony goal in the opening 30 seconds of the final stanza followed by a David Hale major just four minutes later.
