AFL moves to Gold Coast

The AFL has declared it is in for the long haul as it aims to expand the game further in Queensland.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said a staff of 12 would be assembled on the Gold Coast by early next year to deliver the Kangaroos’ games at Carrara and drive the development of football in the community.
“We are really excited about staging regular AFL games on the Gold Coast in partnership with AFL Queensland and the Kangaroos,” Demetriou said.
“But equally we are excited about our Next Generation strategy which outlines significant investment over the next five years to build an even stronger Australian football base on the Gold Coast. "
“We will be creating local jobs to drive the development of the game in schools, in the NAB AFL Auskick competitions, community leagues and to improve facilities on the Gold Coast."
Demetriou said the AFL's main aim was to have one football match staged every week in south-east Queensland within the next decade.
“Our vision is to play a football match each week in south-east Queensland by 2015 but we are building a strong base that will support and sustain football for decades to come,” he said."
Kangaroos chairman Graham Duff said the move to the Gold Coast provided the club with an ideal opportunity to boost interest in the game in the region.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity to be actively involved in Gold Coast schools, local football clubs and community days to boost participation and interest in football on the Gold Coast,” Duff said.
“It’s a great opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the region and for our players to get out and meet the fans and enjoy a great AFL experience.”
The Kangaroos will play ten games on the Gold Coast over the next three years.
