Just an update

August 4th 2010 06:13
WELL it has been a while since AFL Central has been updated. Apologies but other commitments have taken greater priority in recent times.

From now on I will be updating the site perhaps once or twice a week with information regarding plans I have for the future with regards to establishing my own publishing company.

The first plan under this company would be to launch an AFL site, so this is naturally the perfect place to seek the views of your views on what you want.

Submit your ideas below or simply contact me on tonykeen25@gmail.com on what you would like to see on an AFL site to set it apart from what is already in the marketplace.

Saints too good for Eagles

May 23rd 2010 09:29

ST KILDA has ended a two-match losing run with a come-from-behind 35-point win over West Coast at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

The Saints trailed by 17 points early in the third quarter but lifted and piled on nine of the last ten goals of the contest to record a 13.13 (91) to 8.8 (56) victory.

It was St Kilda's sixth win of the season while the Eagles now have six losses to their name after nine rounds.

Saints acting captain Lenny Hayes led from the front with 35 possessions while Brendon Goddard (30) and Nick Dal Santo (27) were also influential.

Jason Blake and Raphael Clarke held in-form West Coast forwards Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras goalless. Clarke also generated plenty of run from defence with 21 touches.

St Kilda had nine individual goal-kickers for the match - Stephen Milne the most effective with three majors.

Adam Selwood was West Coast's best with 32 disposals and two goals, Matt Priddis (34 possessions) tried hard while Ben McKinley booted four first-half majors.

Dees win thriller

May 22nd 2010 12:54

MELBOURNE has snapped a three-game losing streak with a thrillling one-point win over Port Adelaide at TIO Stadium in Darwin on Saturday night.

The Demons led by 33 points at three-quarter time but the Power lifted their rating and banged on seven of the first eight goals of the final stanza to hit the front at the 21-minute mark.

Jamie Bennell gave Melbourne back the lead with a classy snap before the lead changed hands again courtesy of Cameron Hitchcock's third major.

Tom Logan had the chance to give Port a handy break but his shot from 50m sailed wide.

The Dees rushed the ball up the ground and found Brad Green who kicked truly to level the scores with just under five minutes remaining.

A rushed behind from a ball-up put Melbourne in front with little over a minute left on the clock before Port defender Alipate Carlile was penalised for stepping outside the goal-square from the resultant kick-in.

It proved to be a costly error as the Demons held firm in the dying stages to record a 17.9 (111) to 16.14 (110) win.

Melbourne now has four wins on the board for the year while the Power slips to 5-4 after their second successive loss.

Much-maligned Demons forward Brad Miller top-scored with five goals while Bennell and Green chipped in with four and three majors respectively.

Aaron Davey showed his class with 26 possessions while Colin Sylvia (25) and impressive youngster Jack Trengrove (24) were busy contributors.

Travis Boak was Port's best with 25 disposals and three goals while Kane Cornes collected 28 touches.

Dockers down Swans

May 22nd 2010 08:36

FREMANTLE has recorded its first win over Sydney at the SCG since 1996, downing the Swans by 37 points on Saturday afternoon.

The Dockers led at every change before posting a 14.16 (100) to 9.9 (63) win.

It was an impressive performance by Mark Harvey’s men given the drama surrounding Michael Johnson’s drug charge earlier in the week.

The result sees Fremantle improve to 7-2 while Sydney has now lost three matches on the trot to slip to 5-4.

And to make matters worse for the Swans, hard-running defender Tadhg Kennelly and spearhead Daniel Bradshaw suffered knee injuries.

Dockers skipper Matthew Pavlich was dominant early, booting three first-half goals while David Mundy (25 possessions) and youngster Nathan Fyfe (23) were prominent.

Paul Hasleby (16 disposals, two goals) and Kepler Bradley (15 disposals, 10 hit-outs and two goals) were also among Fremantle's best.

For the Swans, Nick Malceski and Daniel Hannebery collected 28 touches each while Gary Rohan was lively with 15 touches and one goal in just his third game.

Dogs thump Roos

May 22nd 2010 08:03

THE Western Bulldogs have thumped North Melbourne to the tune of 70 points at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs slammed on the first ten goals of the contest before going on to record a 20.7 (127) to 7.15 (57) victory.

It was the Dogs' third successive win and sixth of the season.

The big story to come out of the match was the report of prize Bulldogs recruit Barry Hall for engaging in rough conduct and wrestling Kangaroos defender Scott Thompson in the second quarter.

Thompson sparked the incident by bumping Hall onto the ground while the former Swan was tying his bootlaces.

Hall responded by grabbing Thompson in a headlock and didn’t relinquish his grip as Roos players converged.

Thompson finally managed to get his head free and ended up having his name put in the book for an alleged head-butt on Hall.

Adam Cooney was best afield with 36 possessions and two goals while Brian Lake did as he pleased in defence, finishing with 41 disposals and 22 marks.

Josh Hill kicked four goals while Hall chimed in with three majors.

Cats outclass Pies

May 21st 2010 12:28

GEELONG has claimed top spot on the AFL ladder with a 36-point win over Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night.

The Cats trailed by 11 points at the 20-minute mark of the third quarter but kicked eight unanswered goals to run out 12.14 (86) to 6.14 (50) victors.

James Kelly was impressive with a game-high 32 possessions while Gary Ablett (31) and James Bartel (30) were also prolific.

Cameron Mooney kicked three goals in his 200th game while Mathew Stokes also managed three majors in just his second game of the year after serving a club-imposed suspension.

For the Magpies, Dayne Beams booted a career-best four goals while Ben Johnson (28 disposals) and Luke Ball (27) battled hard all night.

Collingwood got the first goal of the match through Dane Swan in just the second minute before Ablett roved a Mark Blake tap and kicked truly from 45m out on an acute angle a minute later.

They were the only goals in a first quarter in which both sides applied intense pressure.

The Pies got off to a dream start in the second term with Beams converting a set shot in the opening minute.

But Geelong took control of general play from that moment on and managed goals through Steve Johnson, Mooney and Tom Hawkins on their way to a 16-point advantage at the 24-minute mark.

It appeared as if the Cats would go into the main break with a handy buffer but a brilliant tackle by Alan Didak on Josh Hunt led to Beams soccering one home from close range before the young Magpie marked and made no mistake from 50m on the siren to cut the deficit to just five points at half-time.

Goals from Beams and Shane O'Bree saw Collingwood open up a 10-point lead early in the third quarter.

The Pies had all the momentum but failed to capitalise in front of goal.

They were made to pay as the Cats banged on five majors in a 10-minute burst with Mooney chipping in with two to help his side to a 22-point lead at three-quarter time.

Collingwood pressed hard early in the final stanza but managed just five behinds before Geelong launched a counter-attack which resulted in Stokes running into an open goal to put the result beyond doubt.

VENUE and TIME: MCG, Friday 21 May, 7.40pm (AEST)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 216, Collingwood 124, Geelong 91, Drawn 1

LAST TIME: Geelong 17.18 (120) def Collingwood 6.11 (47), Preliminary Final 2009 at the MCG

RECENT HISTORY: Geelong has won four of its past five matches against Collingwood.

FORM: Collingwood sits on top of the AFL ladder with a 7-1 win-loss record - their best start to a season since 1981. The Magpies have won their past five matches by an average of 56 points. Geelong has responded to a disappointing loss to Carlton in round five with convincing wins over Richmond (108), Sydney (67) and Brisbane (81). The Cats occupy second spot on the ladder with a 6-2 record.

MEDICAL ROOM: The Pies welcome back impressive young midfielder Sharrod Wellingham from a calf injury but small forward Paul Medhurst (foot), John McCarthy (hamstring), Sean Rusling (calf - one to two weeks) and Anthony Corrie (knee - two to three weeks) remain on the sidelines. For Geelong, mature-age recruit James Podsiadly and James Kelly return to the side after missing the win over the Lions due to groin and calf injuries respectively. Star midfielder Joel Corey (knee) is a month away from playing while ruckman Brad Ottens (foot - four to six weeks) and rugged utility Max Rooke (knee) are also unavailable.

KEY MATCH-UPS: Cameron Ling vs. Dane Swan

Swan was instrumental in Collingwood's win over the Dockers with 31 possessions and five inside 50’s.

Shutting down Swan will be vital for the Cats if they are going to starve Collingwood’s multi-pronged attack of quality supply.

Ling is one of the best midfield stoppers in the competition and will be given the job of tagging the hard-running Magpie.

Don’t be surprised if Swan starts up forward in a bid to take Ling out of his comfort zone then pushes into the middle.

Harry O’Brien vs. Steve Johnson

Johnson is in stellar form having booted 15 goals in his past three matches, including an equal career-best six against Brisbane.

O’Brien looms as the obvious candidate to match-up on the classy 26-year-old given that he has quelled his influence in the past.

In the win over the Dockers the Pies laid a staggering 93 tackles.

They will need to apply that level of pressure on Friday night otherwise the Cats will continually attack through the corridor and provide the likes of Johnson with plenty of quality ball.

Harry Taylor vs. Travis Cloke

Cloke returned to form with five goals against Fremantle and will need to put in yet another big performance if the Pies are going to claim the four premiership points.

However, his task won’t be an easy one as he will be coming up against Taylor who has developed into arguably one of the best defenders in the league.

The 23-year-old Cat is a good reader of the play who marks well in contested situations.

In fact, Taylor is ranked ninth in the AFL in 2010 for total contested marks.

Collingwood will need to be patient and precise with their delivery of the football into the forward line otherwise Taylor will help set up Geelong’s attacking forays.

Sharrod Wellingham vs. Gary Ablett

The last time these two sides met in the second preliminary final Ablett was damaging with a game-high 34 disposals, two goals and four inside 50’s.

Limiting the creative run of the reigning Brownlow medallist will be a key for the Magpies if they are going to have any hope of containing the most attacking side in the AFL.

Wellingham - who has taken his game to another level this season - will be given the task of running with Ablett.

It is vital for the Pies that Wellingham is proactive and tries to hurt Ablett going the other way otherwise the Cats star will dictate terms and dominate.

VERDICT: This match is being billed as the biggest of the season to date and surely won‘t disappoint. Geelong and Collingwood boast quality midfield divisions and are the two most attacking sides in the competition but it is in defence where this contest will be won. The Cats’ defensive unit has conceded 186 points in the past three rounds while the Magpies’ backline has leaked 290 in the same period. Cats by 19 points.

FREMANTLE has imposed a raft of sanctions on utility Michael Johnson after he was charged by police on Tuesday with possession of cocaine, including a six-week suspension.

The Dockers announced the sanctions - which were determined under the AFL player code of conduct and in consultation with the club's leadership group and the AFL - at a press conference on Wednesday.

They are as follows:

- Suspension from training with the club until May 31.

- From May 31, Johnson will be able to train with the club but will not be available for selection at AFL or WAFL level until June 21. He will be available for WAFL selection from this date.

- Not available for AFL selection for the club for a total of six weeks (being five AFL matches and the AFL bye), making Johnson available for selection for round 14.

- Stood down from the club’s leadership group for the 2010 season.

- Fine of $5,000, the maximum allowable under the AFL’s player code of conduct.

- Attendance at appropriate drug counselling sessions as determined by the AFL’s Medical Officers.

- Voluntary target testing under AFL guidelines and procedures and the illicit drugs policy.

Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said the sanctions would stand regardless of the outcome of the police charge for a small amount of cocaine.

"While we will ensure that Michael's ongoing welfare is paramount, we are extremely disappointed that, while under the influence of alcohol, he engaged in public conduct that has resulted in a drug related police charge," Rosich said.

"We strongly support the AFL drug policy and the need to counsel and treat players and we will support Michael in confronting this issue."

"But we also want to make clear that his actions at the the weekend will not be tolerated at this club and that is evident by the action we have taken today."

In a prepared statement, Johnson expressed remorse for his behaviour.

"I would like to apologise to the AFL, the AFL Players Association, the Fremantle Footy Club, my team mates, Fremantle supporters, my family and friends," Johnson said.

"I am very disappointed in my actions on the weekend and I am working through it with my legal team and the club.

"It has been a tough couple of days for me and my family. I would like to thank everyone out there who have sent their love and support."

"I really appreciate it. I know it is going to be a tough couple of weeks for me but hopefully I can come back to the footy club, become a better person, a better player and a better father to my children."

Johnson is due to face Perth Magistrates' Court on July 5.

Kirk announces retirement

May 19th 2010 02:57

SYDNEY co-captain Brett Kirk has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old said he knew it was the right decision.

"I'm someone who has played with my heart, led with my heart, and this is a decision that has come from the heart," Kirk said.

"The reason I'm announcing it now is because I started to have thoughts about it over the last week or two."

"I was resisting it, and it was causing me stress and pain, so I need to listen to my intuition."

Kirk was instrumental in the Swans winning the 2005 premiership but said his greatest legacy was not about on-field achievements.

"It's more about the impact and significance I've had on the club and people around it," he said.

"I'm most proud of being part of building a culture here, and helping our club gain respect in the wider football community, and I'm proud of who I am."

Sydney coach Paul Roos paid tribute to Kirk

"Brett Kirk is not only one of the greats of this football club and the game, but he is an incredible example to everyone about what can be achieved with determination, hard work and a never-say-die attitude," Roos said.

"To go from a player who not only battled to get on the Swans list, but was also almost finished as a player at the end of 2002, and then to end his career as possibly one of the top five players to ever play for the football club is an achievement of mind over matter."

"It's not only his legacy as a player that is extraordinary."

"Equally important is his enormous influence on the culture of this football club."

"Hopefully there will always be a little bit of Brett Kirk in the Sydney Swans Football Club."

Since coming off the Swans' rookie list in 1999, Kirk has played 225 games - including an ongoing streak of 184.

Kirk - who has been co-captain since 2005 - won the club's best-and-fairest award in their premiership year and again in 2007. He also earned All-Australian honours in 2004.
