Blues commit to Buckley
March 16th 2010 06:54

CARLTON has ensured Dylan Buckley, son of triple premiership player Jim, won't be snapped up by the Greater Western Sydney franchise by registering him as a future father-son draft pick.
Buckley, who captained the Victoria Metro Under-16 team last year, will be taken by the Blues in the 2011 national draft.
The registration comes on the same day Buckley celebrated his 17th birthday.
Carlton was forced to make a decision early on Buckley because Team GWS is able to recruit a dozen 17-year-olds born between January and April 1993 as part of the club's National Rookie Access Draft concessions from the end of this season.
"It is great that a famous Carlton name will continue at the Carlton Football Club and it is a real bonus to know that such an outstanding young player will be available to be recruited to Carlton at the end of 2011," Blues football operations manager Steven Icke said.
"Dylan is now able to concentrate on his schooling and his junior football with the knowledge that his football future is in place."
Buckley said he was thrilled to be in this position but admitted he needed to keep developing.
"This does provide me with some certainty about my footballing future but I know there is plenty of work to be done," Buckley said.
"Thankfully I will be able to tap into the resources of the Carlton Football Club to assist my development over the next two years - not just the expertise of the people at the Club but also some of the great new facilities at Visy Park."
Jim Buckley made his debut for Carlton at the tender age of 16 in 1976 and went on to represent the Blues in 164 senior matches.
He was a member of the 1979, 1981 and 1982 premiership teams and won the club's best-and-fairest-award in 1982.
In 2000 he was inducted into Carlton's Hall of Fame.
Meanwhile, the Blues have elevated small forward Jeffrey Garlett to their senior list.
