Cats crush Dees

May 3rd 2009 08:14
GEELONG remains unbeaten in 2009 after downing Melbourne by 43 points at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The Cats broke the game open in the second term before cruising to a comfortable 15.21 (111) to 10.8 (68) win.

Geelong finished the match with 497 disposals - breaking last weekend’s record of 490 possessions against Brisbane.

Last year’s grand finalists weren’t at their devastating best but they did enough to secure the four premiership points.

Paul Chapman and James Bartel starred with a game-high 41 possessions apiece. They received good support from Joel Corey, Corey Enright, Joel Selwood, and Andrew Mackie who racked up 30-plus disposals.

Gary Ablett had a quiet afternoon by his standards (25 possessions) and spent most of the final term on the bench getting treatment on his groin.

Steve Johnson was influential with four goals and 20 disposals while Cameron Mooney chimed in with three majors.

For the Demons, Aaron Davey continued his brilliant form with a team-high 30 possessions while Cale Morton and Brock McLean won plenty of the football.

Russell Robertson booted three goals in his first game since round 10 last year while defender James Frawley tried hard all day.

Ablett got his side off to a sensational start, kicking a goal on the run from 55m after just nine seconds of play.

When Mooney kicked truly moments later the Cats looked on course for yet another percentage-boosting win.

But the Demons refused to be blown away and won their fair share of the football in the opening stanza with Davey and Morton leading from the front.

However, Melbourne didn’t translate their good work around the ground onto the scoreboard, booting four straight behinds before Ricky Petterd kicked truly.

The Demons hit the front late in the quarter thanks to a major from Morton before Mooney kicked his second to give the Cats a five-point advantage at the first change.

Johnson was at his damaging best in the second quarter, booting three of his side’s six goals to help the Cats to a commanding 32-point lead at half-time.

Geelong was incredibly wasteful early in the second half, kicking five straight behinds before Chapman slotted one home from 50.

Robertson’s second and third majors gave the Demons a glimmer of hope but the Cats were simply a class above their opposition and went into the final change with a match-winning 46-point lead.

To their credit the Demons didn’t drop their heads and went on to win the final quarter but it was too little too late.
