Cats crush Swans

May 9th 2009 07:37
GEELONG has maintained its unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 51-point win over Sydney at Skilled Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Even without the number one player in the AFL in Gary Ablett who missed the first of what is expected to be a two to three game stint on the sidelines with a groin injury, the Cats were a class above the Swans as they cruised to a comfortable 17.14 (116) to 10.5 (65) win.

The Cats have now won 49 of their past 52 matches and 17 of their past 18 at Skilled Stadium.

Joel Selwood and Joel Corey were influential in the middle with a game-high 34 possessions apiece while Steve Johnson got his side going with four first-half goals.

Cameron Mooney, Mathew Stokes and Tom Hawkins chimed in with three apiece while Matthew Scarlett kept Sydney spearhead Barry Hall goalless.

For the Swans, Adam Goodes tried hard all day and finished with 27 disposals and two goals. Ryan O’Keefe won plenty of the football while Michael O’Loughlin booted three goals.

Sydney kicked with the aid of a two to three goal breeze in the opening stanza but they failed to make the most of it.

They had to wait until the 24-minute mark to get their first goal on the board when O’Loughlin ran into an open goal.

Johnson was dangerous early and kicked his side’s first a minute later after three early misses to give the Cats a three-point lead at quarter-time.

Geelong clicked into gear in the second term and took control of the contest.

They won more of the football and moved it quickly through the middle as they slammed on seven goals for the quarter.

Johnson was particularly damaging with three goals while Mooney chimed in with two to help give the Cats a commanding 28-point lead at half-time.

The contest appeared to be over when James Bartel kicked the first goal of the second half.

But the Swans refused to give in and hit back with the next three to close to within 15 points.

It would be as close as Sydney would get with the Cats booting the last three goals of the third term to go into the final change with a 36-point lead before adding a further five goals in the last term to secure their fifth straight win over the Swans.
