GEELONG is through to next Friday’s NAB Cup grand final against Collingwood after downing a gallant Carlton outfit by 17 points at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
The Cats were challenged all night by a Carlton side that was missing their first-choice midfield and spearhead Brendon Fevola but they always managed to keep their noses in front and eventually prevailed 2.9.12 (84) to 0.9.13 (67).
Paul Chapman was Geelong’s best with 26 possessions and two goals, including a super-goal. Harry Taylor was damaging in defence with a team-high 29 disposals while Cameron Ling was a busy contributor in the middle with 28 touches.
For the Blues, Shaun Grigg looks set for a breakout year after racking up 29 disposals while rookie Arron Joseph impressed in a run-with role with Geelong star Gary Ablett.
The Cats led by 15 points after a scrappy first-half and threatened to run away with the contest when they kicked the three of the first four goals of the third term to skip out to a 29-point lead at the 16-minute mark.
But the Blues refused to give in and hit back through Grigg, Cameron Cloke and Simon Wiggins to trail by just 11 points heading into the final change.
Geelong got the crucial first goal of the final stanza through Chapman before the Blues replied through Eddie Betts who kicked truly from a tight angle.
The margin blew out to 21 points midway through the term when Chapman landed a super goal.
Carlton responded with a major of their own but the Cats had all the answers with Tom Lonergan kicking truly to seal a hard-fought win for Geelong.
