Cats down Port

February 28th 2009 08:05
MATHEW Stokes has inspired Geelong to an 18-point win over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

Stokes booted three last-quarter goals to lift the Cats to a 0.11.6 (72) to 1.6.9 (54) victory.

Geelong will now take on either Hawthorn or Carlton for the right to play in the NAB Cup Grand Final.

The loss was made worse for Port with promising youngster Hamish Hartlett leaving the field with a shoulder injury.

Stokes finished the match with four goals while James Bartel and Paul Chapman won plenty of the football.

For Port Adelaide, Nathan Krakeour generated plenty of run while Kane Cornes and Josh Carr were busy contributors.

The first half was an uninspiring affair with both sides struggling to produce their best in the blustery conditions.

The Cats took a one-point lead into quarter-time and maintained that advantage at half-time before kicking the only two goals in and opened up a 10-point lead heading into the final change after two unanswered goals in the third term.

The second goal - a running major from Bartel showed Geelong’s class with the Cats moving the ball from half-back to attack with a series of handballs.

Port could have easily been in front at three-quarter time but they failed to capitalise in front of goal, booting a wasteful 0.4 for the term.

The Power closed to within a point in the final term thanks to a super goal from Daniel Motlop but Port had no answer for Stokes who guided his team home.
