Cats too good for Crows

February 21st 2009 12:11
GARY Ablett has inspired Geelong to a 35-point win over Adelaide in the first round of the NAB Cup at Telstra Dome on Saturday night.

Ablett, who finished the match with four majors, booted three goals - one of them a super goal - in a stunning three-minute burst deep into time-on in the opening term to help set up the Cats’ comfortable 1.17.8 (119) to 2.9.12 (84) victory.

The loss was made worse for Adelaide with promising young forward Taylor Walker appearing to turn an ankle midway through the second term. The 18-year-old took no further part in the match.

Geelong dominated the midfield - they racked up 408 possessions - 245 of which were handballs - which is understood be a record for an AFL match.

James Bartel led the way with a game-high 30 disposals. He received good support from Joel Corey who racked up 29 possessions while Mathew Stokes was damaging with 29 touches and three goals.

Ryan Gamble stepped up in the absence of Cameron Mooney, booting four goals while Tom Lonergan chimed in with three majors.

For the Crows, skipper Simon Goodwin led from the front with 29 disposals while Scott Stevens and Tyson Edwards each kicked two goals.

In some good news for Adelaide, forward Trent Hentschel got through his first match since suffering a severe knee injury in round 21, 2006 unscathed.

The 26-year-old kicked a goal early in the third term and will undoubtedly be better for the run.

The Crows were right in the contest before Ablett came off the bench and had an immediate impact.

First he worked his opponent Aaron Kite under the ball and took a bounce before slotting home a super goal from 55m.

Then two minutes later he crumbed the pack and snapped truly before kicking his third to give his side a 25-point lead at the first change.

Ablett continued to exert his dominance in the second term, kicking the first of Geelong’s six-second term goals.

The Crows trailed by 35 points at the main break but got themselves back into the contest with early goals from Edwards and Hentschel.

But Geelong quickly put the match beyond Adelaide’s reach, slamming on four unanswered goals to take a match-winning 47-point lead into the final change.

The Cats will now face the winner of Sunday’s clash between the Sydney Swans and Port Adelaide.
