HAWTHORN has been hit with a $5.000 fine following comments made by coach Alistair Clarkson after his side's 11-point loss to Geelong at the MCG last Friday night.
Clarkson said in his post-match press conference that "he was a good player for the Cats that No.17, he's a ripper".
The comment was directed at field umpire Justin Schmitt who wears shirt No.17.
AFL acting football operations manager Jill Lindsay said Clarkson had breached AFL Player Regulations.
"Regulations such as these exist because of the need for the AFL competition to set a positive example on conduct towards umpires," Lindsay said.
