Classy Cats claim Cup
March 13th 2009 13:10
GEELONG has claimed its second pre-season trophy in four years with a 76-point demolition of Collingwood in the NAB Cup grand final at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.
The Cats broke the game open in a dominant second term before cruising to a convincing 0.18.19 (127) to 1.6.6 (51) victory.
The win was soured somewhat for Geelong with defender Josh Hunt suffering a knee injury late in the first term.
Hunt, who was carried off the field on a stretcher but later returned to the sidelines on crutches, will have scans on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury.
Geelong young gun Joel Selwood looks set for a big year after winning the Michael Tuck medal for best afield.
Selwood was particularly damaging early, racking up 19 of his 33 touches in the first half.
He received good support from Gary Ablett who collected 35 possessions and booted three goals.
Tarkyn Lockyer was Collingwood’s best with 20 possessions while Scott Pendlebury and Dale Thomas tried hard all night.
Scores were level after a hard-fought first term before the Geelong midfield took control of the contest in the second term.
The Cats had 113 possessions to 61 for the quarter and entered inside their forward 50 23 times to just four for the Magpies.
Geelong translated their dominance around the ground onto the scoreboard, slamming on six unanswered goals in a stunning 12-minute burst to skip out to a match-winning 40-point lead heading into the main break.
Such was their dominance Collingwood failed to score a goal between the 17-minute mark of the first term and the 13-minute mark of the third term.
The focus of both sides will now switch to round one of the home-and-away season with Geelong to meet reigning premiers Hawthorn while Collingwood will play Adelaide at the MCG.
