Classy Crows destroy dismal Dockers

July 11th 2009 13:07
ADELAIDE has celebrated skipper Simon Goodwin’s 250th game with a stunning 117-point demolition of Fremantle at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.

The Crows set up their seventh straight win with a dominant first half before improving their percentage with a seven goal final term, eventually prevailing 19.18 (130)to 1.7 (13).

The win was Adelaide’s biggest ever over Fremantle, surpassing a 96-point thumping in round eight 1996 and was also the lowest score kicked against them in a match.

The Dockers, who were held to their lowest ever score, have now lost their past eight games.

Nathan Bock and Graham Johncock generated plenty of run from defence with 29 possessions apiece.

Bernie Vince (29 disposals) was prolific in the middle while Scott Thompson, Andy Otten and Goodwin also won plenty of the football.

Up forward, Jason Porplyzia and Kurt Tippett did most of the damage, booting five goals each while promising youngster Patrick Dangerfield chimed in with three majors.

For the Dockers, Greg Broughton racked up a game-high 30 possessions while Paul Duffield (26 disposals) tried hard all night.

The Crows stamped their authority on the contest in the opening stanza, winning more of the football and applying relentless pressure all over the ground as they slammed on five unanswered goals to open up a 33-point lead at quarter-time.

It was more of the same in the second term - the Crows controlling possession as they added further five goals to blow the margin out to 68 points at the main break.

Former Bomber Kepler Bradley had his side’s only two shots on goal for the quarter but failed to convert on either occasion with the first going out of bounds on the full before his second attempt after the siren was punched into the field of play.

Adelaide kicked goals through Dangerfield and Porplyzia early in the second half before Fremantle broke through for its first major at the 11-minute mark with Ryan Murphy kicking truly.

The Dockers were more competitive in the third term with the Crows winning the quarter by just seven points.

With percentage set to play a major part in determining the make-up of the top four, the Crows didn’t take their foot off the pedal as they piled on seven unanswered goals to cap off a superb performance.
