GEELONG midfielder Joel Corey is a doubtful starter for round one after suffering a knee injury in the Cats' 14-point loss to North Melbourne in the first-round NAB Cup match at Etihad Stadium last Sunday.
Corey was subbed off at half-time after copping a knock to his knee. He underwent scans on Monday which revealed that he had suffered a a slight tear to the lateral meniscus.
The two-time premiership player underwent surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks.
"Joel suffered a similar injury in 2005 and after the same procedure he returned after three weeks and we think this will be the same outcome," Cats general manager of football operations Neil Balme said on the club's official website.
"You never want an injury but in these cases it could always be worse. We are confident that Joel will be available early in the season."
Corey will celebrate his 200th game in his next match.
Geelong starts its 2010 premiership defence against Essendon at the MCG on March 26.
