Cousins moves to revive AFL career

July 1st 2008 00:01
BEN COUSINS has taken a major step towards reviving his AFL career, registering with VFL club Port Melbourne yesterday.

Cousins registered with the club on the last day that the league would accept player registrations for 2008 but the former West Coast captain will not train with the Borough until at least the middle of this month.

In the meantime, Cousins is training with WAFL clubs Perth and East Fremantle.

The 2005 Brownlow medallist was deregistered by the AFL last year for bringing the game into disrepute after a highly publicised battle with substance abuse.

Port does not expect him to play any games this year.

"At this point, we've been told it's just for training," said club general manager Barry Kidd.

"But we'd have to be certified if we didn't play him (if he wanted to play)."

Kidd said Port Melbourne was happy to give Cousins a second chance despite his chequered past.

"There were no football indiscretions," he said.

"We know he's here to train and that's all he's interested in, and we are firm believers in giving blokes a second chance."
