Crows win thriller
March 28th 2009 06:52
ADELAIDE has held on for a thrilling four-point win over Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
The Crows’ 13.12 (90) to 13.8 (86) victory is their first over the Magpies at the home of football in more than a decade.
The Pies were well served by Scott Pendlebury who racked up a team-high 29 possessions while Dane Swan and Shane O’Bree were busy contributors in the middle.
For Adelaide, Bernie Vince was influential with a game-high 33 touches. Andrew McLeod provided plenty of run off half-back with 30 disposals while veterans Tyson Edwards and Simon Goodwin also got plenty of the football while Scott Stevens chimed in with three majors.
Collingwood kicked the first goal of the match through Travis Cloke in the opening minute but the rest of the term belonged to the Crows who slammed on five of the next six to take a 23-point lead into quarter-time.
Adelaide should have been further in front at the first change but they failed to make the most of their chances in front of goal, booting a wasteful 5.5 for the quarter.
The Pies lifted their intensity in the second term and got back into the match thanks to the efforts of Pendlebury and Swan in the middle while John Anthony booted two of his side’s five goals for the quarter to help reduce the deficit to just 13 points at the main break.
Five goals in 15 minutes to the Pies saw the lead blow out to 18 points in the third term and it appeared as if the Magpies were on course for an easy win.
But the Crows found another gear and hit back through promising youngster Jared Petrenko, Nathan van Berlo and Stevens to level the scores heading into the final change.
The final quarter was a dour struggle with the first major not coming until the 14-minute mark when Adelaide midfielder Chris Knights kicked truly.
The Pies looked to have hit back through Dale Thomas but his goal was disallowed because he was deemed to have taken the ball out of play.
Jason Porplyzia slotted one home to give the Crows a handy 11-point break before Pendlebury converted from directly in front with just two minutes left on the clock to set up a thrilling finish.
