MELBOURNE has suffered a major injury blow with ruckman Mark Jamar to miss eight weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.
The Demons have elevated young ruckman Jake Spencer to replace Jamar who has been placed on the long-term injury list.
Melbourne coach Dean Bailey said Spencer, who has played in all the club's pre-season matches, deserved to be elevated.
"This is a good reward for Jake," Bailey said.
"He has been one of the players who has really impressed since we returned to pre-season training, way back on 13 October 2008."
"He's a young ruckman who - with some experience - we think can be really exciting for us."
Meanwhile, promising young midfielder Jack Grimes is set to miss at least three weeks after developing a stress injury in his lower back.
The Demons are also expected to be without Matthew Whelan (calf), Paul Wheatley (calf), Daniel Bell (thumb), Russell Robertson (Achilles) and James Strauss (ankle) for the round one clash against North Melbourne at the MCG.
