Depth is the key to success

August 17th 2006 06:58
There are many ingredients that go towards winning a premiership.

A good playing list, form, stability, an element of luck in terms of injuries and suspension and of course depth.

One of the biggest myths going around in football circles at the moment is that the Western Bulldogs are running out of legs and becoming a victim of their own fast-paced game plan.

While the Doggies have been unlucky this year in terms of injuries; with five players succumbing to knee injuries (Luke Darcy, Robert Murphy, Tim Walsh, Adam Morgan and Mitch Hahn), the club has been surprisingly the most settled in season 2006 with 14 players playing all 19 games.

Perhaps the most encouraging statistic for Bulldog’s fans is that eight of those 14 players have yet to register 100 games of senior football, thus all bodes well for the future.

In an ominous sign to the other seven sides in the top 8, reigning premiers Sydney have had a more settled side this year compared to last; with 12 players involved in all 19 games this year compared with nine in 2005.

Third on the most players to play all 19 games ladder is the Kangaroos with nine players.

In what has been for the most part a disappointing season for the Roos, after playing finals football last season, this statistic suggests that the Kangaroos list runs pretty thin once you go past the first half dozen.

Illustrating the gulf in depth in the competition is the fact that ladder leaders the Crows have had three fewer players play every game this season, yet sit eight games clear of the men from Arden St.

Therefore it must be said that while having a talented playing list is important in terms of success, depth and the ability to cover the loss of player’s due to injuries and suspension which are part and parcel of AFL football is the key component when it comes to sustained success.
