Dockers end Gabba hoodoo
May 8th 2010 13:45
FREMANTLE has recorded its first ever win over Brisbane at the Gabba, defeating the Lions by 13 points on Saturday night.
Leading by 27 points at the nine-minute mark of the final term, the Dockers appeared to be on course for an easy win but Brisbane lifted and kicked four unanswered goals to reduce the deficit to just one straight kick.
Cheynee Stiller had the chance to level the scores with three minutes remaining in the contest but his set shot went out on the full.
It proved to be a costly miss with Fremantle getting the ball to Chris Mayne who ran into an open goal to seal a deserved 15.23 (113) to 15.10 (100) win.
It was the Dockers' sixth win of the season while the Lions have now lost three straight matches after starting their campaign with four victories.
And to make matters worse for Brisbane, defender Josh Drummond and star utility Jared Brennan suffered knee and ankle injuries respectively in the third quarter.
Fremantle youngster Stephen Hill showed his class with 32 possessions while David Mundy (29) was also damaging.
Matthew Pavlich continued his impressive run form with 26 disposals, nine marks and three goals. The Dockers skipper could have easily finished the night with a big haul but he let himself down in front of goal, booting four behinds.
Luke McPharlin kept Lions captain Jonathan Brown to only one goal while Chris Tarrant did a good job on Brendan Fevola with the former Blue managing just three majors.
Simon Black was Brisbane's best with 36 touches and two goals while Michael Rischitelli (28) tried hard all night.
