Dockers hold off Blues

May 9th 2009 12:45
FREMANTLE has held on for a seven-point win over Carlton at Gold Coast Stadium on Saturday night.

The Dockers led at every change and survived a last-quarter surge from the Blues to prevail 13.10 (88) to 11.15 (81).

Fremantle has now won its past three matches after starting the season with four straight losses while the Blues have dropped their past two to slip to sixth place on the ladder with a 3-4 win-loss record.

Aaron Sandilands was dominant in the ruck with a staggering 42 hit outs, 25 possessions and one goal while Paul Hasleby continued his brilliant form and was particularly influential early, collecting 20 of his team-high 32 touches in the first half.

Garrick Ibbotson (23 disposals) shared the honours in his duel with Carlton skipper Chris Judd while Chris Tarrant did a superb blanketing job on Brendan Fevola, restricting the Blues spearhead to just one goal.

The Dockers had 10 individual goal kickers for the match - David Mundy, Byron Schammer and Ryan Murphy the most effective with two apiece.

For the Blues, Heath Scotland finished with a game-high 35 possessions. He was well supported by young guns Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs who racked up 30-plus disposals.

Judd was a busy contributor with 28 touches while Jarrad Waite was his side’s only multiple goal kicker with three majors - all of which came in the second term.

Leading by two points after an even opening stanza, the Dockers’ willingness to use the corridor in the paid dividends as they slammed on seven goals in a free-flowing second term.

Waite ensured his side was still in the contest at half-time, booting three of his side’s five goals as Fremantle went into the main break with a 13-point advantage.

Carlton dominated the first 10 minutes of the second half but they failed to make the most of their chances, booting five straight behinds.

The Dockers got a goal against the run of play when Dean Solomon snapped truly and when Mundy kicked his second four minutes later Fremantle had skipped out to a 21-point lead.

Chris Yarran’s first goal in AFL football gave the Blues a sniff heading into the final change with the Dockers holding a 15-point advantage.

The margin blew out to a game-high 22 points three minutes into the final stanza when Murphy kicked his second before the Blues hit back through Fevola and Aaron Joseph who converted to get his side back to within nine points at the 23-minute mark.

The Blues had their chances in the dying stages to win the match but they failed to capitalise as the Dockers held on for their first ever win in Queensland.
