Dockers overrun Eagles

May 2nd 2009 09:42
FREMANTLE has recorded a come-from-behind 13-point win over West Coast in the western derby at Subiaco Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Dockers trailed by 23 points at half-time but came to life in the second half, slamming on nine goals to three to record a gutsy 13.9 (87) to 9.20 (74) victory.

The result means Fremantle has now won six of the past seven derbies, including the last four.

Some of the gloss was taken off the win for the Dockers with midfielder Ryan Crowley suffering an ankle injury in the first quarter.

Paul Hasleby won the Ross Glenndinning medal for his 35-possession game. He was well supported by Paul Duffield and Byron Schammer who racked up 30-plus disposals.

Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich overcame a sluggish start to finish with 23 possessions, seven inside 50’s and one goal in his 200th game while exciting youngster Stephen Hill generated plenty of run with 21 disposals and two goals.

For the Eagles, Matt Priddis racked up a team-high 26 possessions while Dean Cox tried hard all day and finished with 24 touches, seven marks and 19 hit outs.

West Coast had five more scoring shots than the Dockers in the opening stanza but went into quarter-time with only a 10-point advantage after booting a wasteful 4.6.

The Eagles applied relentless pressure all over the ground in the second quarter and continually forced Fremantle into turnovers.

But they failed to make the Dockers pay for their poor use of the football and decision making, kicking a wayward 2.7 for the term to go into the main break with a 23-point lead.

Fremantle lifted their rating in the third quarter and started to win more of the contested football.

They were rewarded for their willingness to run hard with goals from Ryan Murphy, David Mundy, debutant Matt de Boer and Aaron Sandilands.

But it was the Eagles who went into the final change with their noses in front with Andrew Embley kicking two for the term to give his side a six-point buffer.

The margin blew out to 13 points three minutes into the final stanza when Shannon Hurn drilled one home from 55m.

The Dockers refused to be blown away and responded with three goals in as many minutes from Scott Thornton, Hill and Pavlich to hit the front for the first time in the match.

West Coast had their chances to regain the lead but they failed to capitalise in front of goal.

They were made to pay with Brett Peake running into an open goal before Sandilands kicked truly from an acute angle to secure Fremantle’s second win of the season.
