Dockers suspend Johnson for six weeks
May 19th 2010 08:40
The Dockers announced the sanctions - which were determined under the AFL player code of conduct and in consultation with the club's leadership group and the AFL - at a press conference on Wednesday.
They are as follows:
- Suspension from training with the club until May 31.
- From May 31, Johnson will be able to train with the club but will not be available for selection at AFL or WAFL level until June 21. He will be available for WAFL selection from this date.
- Not available for AFL selection for the club for a total of six weeks (being five AFL matches and the AFL bye), making Johnson available for selection for round 14.
- Stood down from the club’s leadership group for the 2010 season.
- Fine of $5,000, the maximum allowable under the AFL’s player code of conduct.
- Attendance at appropriate drug counselling sessions as determined by the AFL’s Medical Officers.
- Voluntary target testing under AFL guidelines and procedures and the illicit drugs policy.
Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said the sanctions would stand regardless of the outcome of the police charge for a small amount of cocaine.
"While we will ensure that Michael's ongoing welfare is paramount, we are extremely disappointed that, while under the influence of alcohol, he engaged in public conduct that has resulted in a drug related police charge," Rosich said.
"We strongly support the AFL drug policy and the need to counsel and treat players and we will support Michael in confronting this issue."
"But we also want to make clear that his actions at the the weekend will not be tolerated at this club and that is evident by the action we have taken today."
In a prepared statement, Johnson expressed remorse for his behaviour.
"I would like to apologise to the AFL, the AFL Players Association, the Fremantle Footy Club, my team mates, Fremantle supporters, my family and friends," Johnson said.
"I am very disappointed in my actions on the weekend and I am working through it with my legal team and the club.
"It has been a tough couple of days for me and my family. I would like to thank everyone out there who have sent their love and support."
"I really appreciate it. I know it is going to be a tough couple of weeks for me but hopefully I can come back to the footy club, become a better person, a better player and a better father to my children."
Johnson is due to face Perth Magistrates' Court on July 5.
