Dogs demolish dismal Dockers

THE Western Bulldogs look set for another big year after thumping Fremantle by 63 points at Subiaco Oval on Sunday night.
The Dogs’ superior foot skills and efficiency in front of goal proved to be the difference between the two sides as they cruised to a convincing 25.7 (157) to 13.16 (94) victory.
Last year’s preliminary finalists had 12 individual goal kickers for the match - Mitch Hahn the most effective with five while Lindsay Gilbee, Ryan Griffen and Nathan Eagleton chimed in with three apiece.
Matthew Boyd was influential in the middle with a game-high 34 possessions while Gilbee generated plenty of run from defence with 32 disposals.
For Fremantle, Steven Dodd, Rhys Palmer and Paul Duffield won plenty of the football while Brett Peake kicked three goals.
The Dockers started brightly with exciting youngster Stephen Hill kicking truly in the opening minute before Palmer dribbled one home just moments later.
However, once the Dogs got their running game going they were simply unstoppable as they slammed on five unanswered goals in a nine-minute burst to open up a 16-point lead.
Back-to-back goals from Peake stemmed the flow before Griffen kicked his third to give his side a nine-point advantage heading into quarter-time.
The Bulldogs kicked the first two goals of the second term before two majors in a minute from Michael Johnson got the Dockers back to within 10 points at the eight-minute mark.
But Fremantle’s poor use of the football prevented them from getting any closer with the Dogs punishing them for their sloppy errors by piling on five of the next six goals to take a commanding 35-point lead into the main break.
When Hahn kicked his second two minutes into the third term the margin had blown out to 41 points and it looked as if the Dogs were on course for a big win.
Inspired by Luke McPharlin's presence in the forward line, the Dockers rallied and closed to within 16 points at the 24-minute mark thanks to a brilliant running goal from Peake.
The Dogs hit back with two goals before Nic Suban slotted one home to reduce the deficit to just 22 points heading into the final chance.
Fremantle had their chances to edge closer early in the final term but Paul Hasleby and Josh Head failed to convert set shots.
The Dockers were made to pay with Jason Akermanis kicking the first of eight final term goals for the Dogs.
