Dogs down Crows

May 10th 2009 06:34
THE Western Bulldogs have ended a three-game losing skid with a 32-point win over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs took control of the contest in the third term before cruising to a 17.16 (118) to 12.14 (86) win.

The Dogs’ slick skills came to the fore in the second half after a scrappy opening and the Crows simply had no answer.

The result sees the Western Bulldogs move to third place on the ladder with a 4-3 win-loss record while the Crows have lost their past two and are yet to win a game at home this season.

Adam Cooney and Nathan Eagleton were influential in the middle with a team-high 29 possessions apiece while Lindsay Gilbee returned to form with 27 disposals, 11 marks and one goal.

Daniel Cross, Matthew Boyd and skipper Brad Johnson also won plenty of the football while Robert Murphy and Jason Akermanis were damaging up forward with four and three goals respectively.

For the Crows, Scott Thompson finished with a game-high 34 possessions but was kept quiet by Boyd in the second half after racking up 26 touches in the first half.

Chris Knights made an impressive return from injury with 24 disposals and three goals while impressive youngster Taylor Walker booted four majors.

The Bulldogs kicked two of the first three goals of the match but with Thompson (16 possessions) generating plenty of run through the middle and Walker providing a target up forward the Crows were able to hit back and went into quarter-time with a seven-point lead.

Both sides were guilty of wasting chances in front of goal in an error-riddled second term before Eagleton drilled one home from outside 50 in the dying stages of the first half to give his side a one-point lead at half-time.

The Bulldogs’ relentless pressure in the third term forced the Crows countless into turnovers and they were punished on the rebound.

Akermanis kicked the first two of the quarter, including a brilliant snap from the pocket before setting up Cooney for a major minutes later.

Murphy chimed in with two goals and when Will Minson kicked truly from directly in front the margin had blown out to 36 points.

Walker’s third briefly halted the Dogs’ momentum but they responded with the last two goals of the quarter to open up a match-winning 45-point lead at three-quarter time.

With the result well and truly beyond doubt the Bulldogs took their foot of the pedal as Adelaide kicked six goals to four in the final stanza to add some respectability to the scoreboard.
