Dogs too good for Swans

August 3rd 2008 06:34
THE Western Bulldogs have snapped a two-game losing streak with a 16-point win over Sydney at Manuka Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Dogs' 17. 11 (113) to 14.13 (97) victory sees them reclaim second place on the AFL ladder while Sydney hold onto fourth spot by just percentage.

The Swans went missing after an impressive start, scoring just one goal from the six-minute of the opening quarter to the 17-minute mark of the third.

Bulldogs skipper Brad Johnson and Scott Welsh were damaging up forward, combining for nine goals while Daniel Cross was a busy contributor in the middle with a team-high 23 disposals.

For Sydney, Jarrad McVeigh collected 26 posssessions and booted six goals in a best-on-ground performance. Patrick Veszpremi was lively on debut with 17 dipsosals and 1.4 while Barry Hall chimed in with three goals.

The Swans came out firing in the first term, slamming on four goals in less than four minutes with McVeigh booting two to help his side to an early 24-point lead.

In those opening moments the Dogs barely touched the ball but they slowly started to work their way back into the contest, winning more of the contested ball as they slammed on three of the last four goals of the term to close to within 13 points at quarter-time.

The Bulldogs broke the game open in a dominant second term, booting eight goals with Johnson and Welsh kicking two and three respectively to give the Dogs a commanding 28-point lead at the main break.

Sydney fought their way back into the contest in the third term and reduced the deficit to just 20 points heading into the final change.

They should have been closer to the Dogs at three-quarter time but they failed to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal, booting a wasteful 3.5, including four straight behinds to start the term.

The Swans booted five goals in the final stanza but never seriously threatened the Dogs who booted four of their own to cruise to their 14th win of the season.
