ESSENDON coach Matthew Knights confirmed on Tuesday Scott Lucas would be dropped for Friday night's clash with reigning premiers Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium and return to the VFL in a bid to rediscover some form.
Knights said the 226-game veteran took the news well.
"We just felt as a match committee we need to break the cycle that he is at the moment so he can go back and have a bit of relief," Knights said.
"It's very much about breaking the cycle so he can go away, regain some form and then come back and make a impact for the team."
"He was very measured and pretty calm about it, he's an experienced man and he knows what he has to do."
Knights also said he gave Lucas the option to either play this weekend in the VFL or take a complete break before returning to play for the Bendigo Bombers the following week.
Meanwhile, midfielder Mark McVeigh has already been ruled out with an ankle injury which has restricted him to just one senior game this season.
