ESSENDON has kept its slim finals hopes alive with a 37-point win over Brisbane in a high-scoring affair at Telstra Dome on Saturday night.
The Bombers jumped out of the blocks and survived several challenges from the Lions, eventually prevailing 24.11 (155) to 18.10 (118).
Essendon has now won its past four and trails eighth-placed St Kilda by eight premiership points while Brisbane has lost its past two to slump to seventh place on the AFL ladder with an 8-7 win-loss record.
Brent Stanton was damaging in the middle for the Bombers with 32 possessions and three goals. Scott Lucas and skipper Matthew Lloyd combined for nine goals while livewire Leroy Jetta chimed in with three valuable majors.
Andrew Welsh also worked hard all night and finished with a team-high 33 disposals and had the better of his duel with Brisbane Lions star Simon Black, who finished the match with just 20 possessions.
For Brisbane, Daniel Bradshaw and Jonathan Brown booted four and five goals respectively, while Jared Brennan was influential with 22 disposals, eight marks and four majors, three of which came in the final term.
The Bombers were rewarded for their attack on the football and slick ball movement in the opening stanza as they slammed on eight goals to four to take a handy 27-point lead into the first change.
Essendon's 8.3 quarter-time score was their best ever first-quarter score against Brisbane.
The Lions slowly started to work their way back into the contest in the second term, with both sides booting four goals for the quarter as the Bombers took a 26-point advantage into the main break.
Brisbane came out firing after half-time, piling on the first five goals of the third term to gain the lead for the first time in the match.
The Lions seemingly had all the momentum but the Bombers hit back with five majors of their own to remain in control, taking a 29-point lead into the final change.
Brisbane closed the gap on several occasions in the final term but the Bombers had all the answers as they cruised to their sixth win of the season.
