Dons win thriller

February 27th 2009 12:20
ESSENDON has booked its place in the NAB Cup semi-finals with a thrilling two-point win over Brisbane at Telstra Dome on Friday night.

The Bombers led at every change and withstood a late charge from the Lions to prevail 0.9.13 (67) to 1.7.14 (65).

The win was soured somewhat for Essendon with midfielder Mark McVeigh limping from the field late in the second term. He sat out the rest of the match with a protective moon boot on his left foot.

In some good news for the Bombers, Jason Winderlich, Scott Lucas and Alwyn Davey made successful returns from injury.

David Hille dominated in the ruck while Winderlich finished with a team-high 24 disposals, seven marks and five tackles. He received good support in the middle from Jobe Watson and former Adelaide Crow Hayden Skipworth.

For the Lions, defender Josh Drummond was influential with 30 possessions while key forward Daniel Bradshaw booted three goals.

Brisbane failed to kick a major in a scrappy first term but they trailed by just seven points at quarter-time thanks to a super goal from Scott Harding.

Both sides struggled to find an avenue to goal in the second quarter with just two goals booted for the term as the Dons took an 11-point advantage into half-time.

The margin blew out to 19 points in the third term when David Myers kicked truly.

But that only served to spark the Lions into action with Ashley McGrath slotting one home before back-to-back majors from Bradshaw reduced the deficit to just one point heading into the final change.

Essendon kicked away once again early in the final term thanks to two goals from Andrew Lovett but the Lions refused to give in with two majors from promising young forward Mitch Clark setting up a thrilling finish.

The Lions had their chances in the dying stages to snatch victory but they failed to capitalise in front of goal with Clark, Harding and Jack Redden all missing gettable opportunities.

The Bombers will now face Collingwood at Telstra Dome next Friday night for the right to play in the NAB Cup grand final the following Friday.
