Eagles overcome Dees

WEST COAST has snapped a two-game losing streak with a hard-fought eight-point win over Melbourne at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.
The Eagles led at every change and survived a last-quarter surge from the Demons to record an unconvincing 12.18 (90) to 13.4 (82) victory.
Melbourne battled hard all day and had their chances to win but let themselves down with their poor use of the football.
The result sees West Coast move to 11th place on the ladder with a 3-4 win-loss record while the Demons are languishing in bottom place with just one win.
Some of the gloss was taken off the win for the Eagles with star midfielder Daniel Kerr suffering a groin injury.
The loss was made worse for the Demons with defenders Jared Rivers and James Frawley sustaining ankle and groin injuries respectively..
Mark LeCras was lively up forward but failed to make the most of his chances in front of goal, booting a wasteful 4.6 while Dean Cox was influential in the ruck with 27 hit outs, 23 disposals and one goal.
Andrew Embley and Adam Selwood won plenty of the football while David Wirrpanda generated plenty of run from defence with 24 quality disposals.
For the Demons, Cale Morton, Brent Moloney and Cameron Bruce tried hard all day, racking up 30-plus possessions.
Nathan Jones was influential with 27 touches while Brad Miller booted three goals - all of which came in the second term.
The Eagles got off to a flyer with Ben McKinley snapping truly after just 14 seconds of play but the rest of the term belonged to Melbourne who had the better of general play.
However, they failed to translate their hard work around the ground onto the scoreboard and trailed by nine points at quarter-time after a mistimed kick-in from Rivers gifted LeCras his first goal.
Melbourne kicked the first goal of the second term through Cameron Bruce but the Eagles responded with three of the next four to open up 15-point lead.
West Coast looked set to run away with the contest but the Demons refused to be blown away and got themselves back into the match thanks to the efforts of Jones in the middle and Miller who booted three goals in a five minutes to give his side the lead for the first time in the match at the 22-minute mark.
The Eagles steadied through Cox and Selwood before a late snap from Matthew Bate reduced the deficit to just four points at half-time.
The Demons dominated the first half of the third term and skipped out to an 11-point lead after kicking the first three goals of the quarter - two of which came from veteran Russell Robertson.
Robertson could have easily had four for the term but two of his set shots fell short.
Those misses proved to be costly as the Eagles slammed on four goals in a stunning eight-minute burst to open up a handy 15-point lead at three-quarter time.
The Demons kicked three goals to one in the final stanza and could have closed to within less than a kick in time on but Colin Sylvia’s set shot sprayed wide as West Coast held on for a much-needed win.
