Fevola inspired Blues sink Tigers

CARLTON spearhead Brendan Fevola has inspired his side to a 20-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
Fevola booted a career-best nine goals to help lift the Blues to a 16.13 (109) to 12.17 (89) victory.
The win sees Carlton consolidate their place in the top eight while the Tigers are languishing in 14th spot with just three wins for the season.
Andrew Carrazzo and skipper Chris Judd racked up a team-high 29 possessions apiece while Shaun Grigg and Bryce Gibbs also won plenty of the football.
For the Tigers, Ben Cousins collected a game-high 35 disposals while Daniel Jackson (32 touches) tried hard all day.
Brett Deledio was a busy contributor with 29 possessions and two goals while youngsters Tyrone Vickery and Jayden Post showed some promising signs.
Richmond looked set for a long afternoon when Brad Fisher kicked the first goal of the match after only 15 seconds.
But with the aid of a swirling breeze the Tigers were able to hit back with three of the last five goals of the quarter to go into the first change with a one-point lead.
Fevola starred in the second term, kicking four of the Blues’ six majors for the quarter, including a gem in the dying stages of the first half.
The 28-year-old scooped up a Jeff Garlett pass on the bounce with Richmond defender Will Thursfield in hot pursuit.
Unable to break free from Thursfield, Fevola spun around in the tackle and slotted one home from 45m out on the boundary to give his side a 20-point break at half-time.
Richmond controlled general play in the third term but failed to make the most of their chances in front of goal, booting a wasteful 1.8 for the quarter.
While the Tigers were wasteful the Blues were incredibly efficient, kicking 4.1 for the term with Fevola adding a further three majors to blow the margin out to 29 points at three-quarter time.
Fevola’s eighth just two minutes into the final stanza seemingly put the result beyond doubt but Richmond refused to give in and responded with two goals from Vickery before Jack Riewoldt’s third major saw them close to within 19 points.
But any hopes of a come-from-behind win for the Tigers was quashed by Matthew Kreuzer who snapped truly entering time-on to seal Carlton’s eighth win of the season.
