Franklin can break record: Malthouse

HAWTHORN star Lance Franklin will one day break Fred Fanning's 18-goal record, according to Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse.
Franklin booted eight goals in Hawthorn's 54-point win over the Magpies at the MCG last night but he could have easily kicked well over double figures. He booted six behinds and sprayed another shot out on the full.
"I'm not going to be surprised one day that Franklin breaks that record, the number of goals kicked in one game. That will never surprise me," Malthouse said.
Franklin said he was focused on contributing to the team and didn't think about records.
"(It) doesn't really come into my head. If I'm kicking the goals and the points are still there and we're winning I've got no problem with it to be honest," he said.
Franklin said he had no intentions of change his action which involves him veering sharply to his left before kicking the ball.
"I've got my own natural kicking style, there's not point changing it is there?" he said.
"I've been doing my goal-kicking from the start of pre-season so I've just been sticking to what I've done. Nothing's really changed at all with my goal-kicking."
Hawthorn coach Alistair Clarkson refused to single out Franklin, claiming all 22 players did their job.
There's a lot of people out there who seem to be displeased with it (his goal-kicking) but we're pretty happy with the contribution that he makes," he said.
"Maybe there might be an opportunity for the media to focus on the guys that can't get the footy rather than the guys who can get the footy, then focus on the goal-kicking.
"From the way we look at it he is a very, very dangerous forward and what it's doing is opposition sides are starting to double-team him and that's going to create other opportunities for forwards in the side."
"It's significant for our club that we spread the workload and share the acknowledgment right across the side when we play well."
