THE Gold Coast Football Club is one step closer to being admitted into the AFL after the Queensland government announced a $60 million commitment to the upgrading of Gold Coast Stadium at Carrara.
The cash injection will go a long way to ensuring the ground is suitable to host a Gold Coast-based team and will complement a $20 million contribution from the Gold Coast City Council as well as funding from the league.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said that talks were ongoing with the federal government over securing its support for the project as well.
Demetriou also added that he expected the Gold Coast's bid to be at the top of the agenda at the March 21 meeting.
The Gold Coast Football Club will participate in this year's TAC Cup competition, progress to the VFL next year before being scheduled to enter the AFL in 2011.
