Goal umpire in the clear

THE AFL has given the tick of approval to a contentious goal umpiring decision during Melbourne's thrilling one-point win over Brisbane at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.
A Daniel Bradshaw snap at goal early in the third term appeared to curl in for a behind, but goal umpire Jason Venkataya signalled out of bounds on the full.
AFL umpires director Jeff Gischen said video footage was inconclusive.
"If you look at the vision, it's too hard to tell," Gieschen said yesterday.
"You can only go on the vision you see and when you look at that, you can't tell."
Gieschen said Venkataya and both boundary umpires were interviewed yesterday and that they all believed the kick had drifted wide.
"The vision shows the ball sailing high in the air towards the far behind post and the goal umpire runs and gets to the behind post as the ball is crossing the top of it - and the boundary umpire is running in from the forward pocket to the post," Gieschen said.
"They both got there at virtually the same time and looked at each other and started to indicate out of bounds on the full - both of them were clear.
"We asked the other boundary umpire from the far side, from which Bradshaw actually kicked it, and he thought it was out of bounds, too.
"When you've got those guys in close proximity, you've got to trust they know what they're doing."
