Goodes named co-captain
February 13th 2009 01:51
SYDNEY star Adam Goodes has replaced key defender Leo Barry as co-captain of the club.
The dual Brownlow medallist joins Brett Kirk and Craig Bolton at the helm for season 2009.
Sydney coach Paul Roos said Goodes deserved the honour.
"One of the main goals for players as they move on in their careers is to lead at their club," Roos said.
"He narrowly missed out last year when Craig took over from Barry Hall but now Goodesy has this opportunity and is a very suitable and worthy replacement for Leo Barry, who did a terrific job for the footy club."
"We are very confident Adam will carry on in the fine tradition of some of the past great captains, and will ultimately leave his own legacy at the football club."
Despite being a part of the club's leadership group for the past six years, Goodes believes he still needs to work on his leadership.
"It's great that I have got other leaders here at the football club to help me through those things with Kirky and Craig above me now and also Hally (Barry Hall) and Stewie Maxfield still at the club that can really help me with my on-field leadership," he said.
"Just the on-field stuff, being more vocal."
"Making sure that if I'm not playing the best of football, that I'm still getting my team-mates up, still being a voice and body language out of the field, those sorts of things.''
