ESSENDON forward Scott Gumbleton will undergo back surgery which is set to sidleine him for at least 12 weeks.
Gumbleton, who has a bulging disc which is impinging nerves, will be operated on in 10 days time.
Bombers assistant coach Scott Camporeale said the club is still confident that Gumbleton can be a 10-year player despite the latest setback.
"We've spoken to all the really professional people in the area, we haven't just done it lightly and we've got two or three opinions and we think that he can come back bigger and better," he said.
"There has obviously been a lot of examples of players that have been through it, Brad Ottens had the same thing and he's come back and played a lot of good footy so we think with Scotty's age and his attitude towards getting back to playing again, we think we've got a good player on our hands."
