Hawks dent Pies' finals hopes
August 1st 2008 12:41
HAWTHORN has dealt a major blow to Collingwood's finals hopes with a 54-point win at the MCG on Friday night.
The Hawks were challenged briefly in the second half but had all the answers, eventually prevailing 17.14 (116) to 8.14 (62).
The Magpies have now lost five of their past seven and are in danger of dropping out of the top eight at the end of the round.
Lance Franklin starred for Hawthorn with 21 possessions, 12 marks and 8.6. He received quality supply from a midfield that won plenty of the football with skipper Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis all racking up 30-plus disposals while Jarryd Roughead chimed in with four majors.
Scott Pendlebury tried hard all night for Collingwood, collecting 24 possessions and booting two goals while playmaker Heath Shaw returned to form with 25 disposals and two majors.
The Hawks smashed Collingwood in the middle in the first term, winning the clearances 13-3.
They ran hard and used the football cleanly by hand and foot as they slammed on six goals to take a commanding 31-point lead into quarter-time.
Collingwood stemmed the flow of goals in the second term, although they were helped by some poor kicking in front of goal by the Hawks, who booted a wayward 2.5 for the quarter.
But the Magpies failed to make any serious inroads on the scoreboard, booting an equally wasteful 2.6 to trail Hawthorn by 30 points at the main break.
The Pies lifted their intensity in the second half and started to get their hands on the football as they kicked three quick goals through John Anthony, Pendlebury and Shaw to close to within ten points.
It would prove to be as close as the Magpies would get with the Hawks slamming on the last four goals of the term to take a match-winning 34-point lead into the final change.
