Hawks down Tigers in thriller
May 16th 2010 06:50
HAWTHORN has kept its slim finals hopes alive with a thrilling three-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks prevailed 13.11 (89) to 13.8 (86) thanks to a brilliant tackle by skipper Sam Mitchell on Shane Tuck who was about to take a shot on goal from just inside 50 with about 30 seconds left in the match.
The result sees Hawthorn improve to 2-6 while the Tigers remain winless in 2010.
Mitchell collected 29 possessions in his return from a hamstring injury while Luke Hodge (27) was also prolific.
Cyril Rioli booted four goals - three of which came in the last quarter - while former Port Adelaide star Shaun Burgoyne finished with 20 disposals in his first game in the brown and gold.
For Richmond, Daniel Jackson (31 touches), skipper Chris Newman (27, two goals) and young gun Trent Cotchin (27) worked tirelessly while Jack Riewoldt kicked four majors.
