Hawks end Sydney hoodoo

HAWTHORN has dealt a blow to Sydney's hopes of a top-four finish with a 31-point win at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks' 15.16 (106) to 10.15 (75) win was their first over the Swans in seven matches.

Sydney has now lost its past two and leads fifth placed Collingwood by just two premiership points with seven rounds remaining.

Lance Franklin was damaging up forward for Hawthorn with 21 possessions, eight marks and 4.7. He recevied good support from Mark Williams and Jarryd Roughead, who booted four and three goals respectively.

For Sydney, dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes was influential with 27 disposals eight marks and a classy goal while skipper Brett Kirk tried hard all day, finishing the match with a game-high 29 possessions.


The Hawks had the first goal of the match when Williams kicked truly after a Kieran Jack turnover in defence.

When Jack and Jarrad McVeigh gave away successive 50m penalties to gift Simon Taylor an easy goal shortly after it looked as if the Hawks were in for an easy afternoon.

But the Swans responded through Goodes who kicked a miracolous goal from an acute angle at the 19-minute mark before Michael O'Loughlin kicked truly after a free-kick

A late goal from Franklin gave the Hawks a six-point lead at quarter-time.

Hawthorn broke the game open in a dominant second term, slamming on six goals to two to take a commanding 33-point lead into the main break.

Sydney fought its way back into the contest in the third term, booting four goals to one to cut the deficit to 16 points heading into the final change.

Roughead got the crucial first goal of the final term and from thereonin the Hawks were never challenged with Franklin, Roughead, Cyril Rioli and Williams adding further majors to secure Hawthorn's first win over Sydney since round 19, 2003.
