Hawks hold off Dockers

May 15th 2009 14:07
HAWTHORN has kept its top four hopes alive with a 22-point win over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Friday night.

The Hawks led at every change and survived several challenges from the Dockers, eventually prevailing 13.9 (87) to 9.11 (65).

The victory sees Hawthorn improve to a 4-4 win-loss record while the loss ends Fremantle’s three-game winning streak.

Hawthorn skipper Sam Mitchell led from the front with a game-high 34 possessions while Brad Sewell was also influential in the middle with 29 disposals.

Cyril Rioli showed his class with 16 quality touches and two goals while Lance Franklin booted four majors - three of which came in the first half.

Ben McGlynn kept Paul Hasleby to just six disposals in the first half while Chance Bateman generated plenty of run with 22 possessions and one goal.

For the Dockers, skipper Matthew Pavlich starred with 30 disposals and one goal. He was well supported by Byron Schammer and Ryan Duffield who also won plenty of the football while Antoni Grover kept Jarryd Roughead to just one goal.

The Hawks started brightly, kicking the first two goals of the match through Bateman and Stuart Dew in the first five minutes.

Fremantle hit back with two of their own in a hard-fought first quarter before a late major from Franklin gave the Hawks a six-point lead at quarter-time.

When Ryan Murphy kicked truly at the 13-minute mark of the second term the Dockers had the lead for the first time in the match.

But the rest of the term belonged to Hawthorn who slammed on five unanswered goals in a stunning 13-minute burst to open up a commanding 30-point lead at half-time.

Fremantle lifted its rating in the second half but failed to translate their good work around the ground onto the scoreboard, booting a wasteful 4.4 for the term.

Michael Johnson was the chief offender, missing two gettable opportunities. Nic Suban and Luke McPharlin hit the post while ruckman Aaron Sandilands kicked on the full from an acute angle five metres out.

While the Dockers were wasteful, Hawthorn made the most of their chances and went into three-quarter time with a handy 22-point lead.

Fremantle closed to within 16 points when Pavlich slotted one home from 55m two minutes into the final stanza.

The Dockers continued to press but didn't convert and were made to pay with Roughead kicking his first before Franklin’s fourth sealed a much-needed win for the Hawks.
