Hawks win thriller

May 2nd 2009 07:34
HAWTHORN has maintained its dominance over Carlton with a thrilling four-point win at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks led at every change and withstood a late surge from the Blues to prevail 16.10 (106) to 15.12 (102) in a contest worthy of a final.

Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola had a chance to win the match for his side in the final minute but his set shot from 15m out hit the post.

Hawthorn has now won its past six matches against Carlton.

Jarryd Roughead starred up forward, booting eight goals - six of which came in the first half. Hawthorn skipper Sam Mitchell led from the front with a game-high 35 touches while Brad Sewell also won plenty of the football.

For the Blues, Fevola was simply superb with eight majors while skipper Chris Judd was influential with a team-high 33 disposals.

Judd received good support from Marc Murphy who collected 31 possessions while Paul Bower kept Hawthorn star Lance Franklin quiet.

Roughead was simply unstoppable in the opening stanza, booting four of Hawthorn’s five goals for the quarter to lift his side to a 10-point lead at the first change.

Carlton dominated the clearances and entered inside their forward 50 19 times to Hawthorn’s six in the second term but they failed to make the most of their chances, managing just four goals for the term.

While the Blues were wasteful the Hawks were incredibly efficient, kicking four majors to go into half-time with a nine-point advantage.

Hawthorn looked set to run away with the contest when the margin blew out to 19 points in the third term but the Blues hit back with clever snaps from Fevola and Eddie Betts to reduce the deficit to just seven points.

The Hawks had their chances to blow Carlton away in the third quarter but they failed to capitalise in front of goal, booting a wayward 2.7 for the quarter.

They were made to pay with a clever snap from Setanta O’hAilpin and a major from Fevola after the siren getting Carlton to within one point heading into the final change.

The result appeared to be well and truly beyond doubt when Hawthorn skipped out to a 25-point at the 18-minute mark of the last term.

But the Blues refused to give in and responded with a goal from Kade Simpson and two majors from Fevola to close to within five points.

Fevola’s shot at the 32-minute mark appeared to be on its way through but it faded late as the Hawks held on for a valuable win.
