Hawks too good for Lions
August 9th 2008 07:24
HAWTHORN has dealt a major blow to Brisbane's finals hopes with a 69-point win at Aurora Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks broke the game open in the second half, slamming on 13 goals to record a comfortable 16.14 (110) to 5.11 (41) victory.
The Lions' score was their fifth-lowest since the merger of Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy in 1997.
The loss means Brisbane will be a game and percentage outside the eight if Collingwood manages to defeat St Kilda at the MCG tonight.
The Lions have now lost six of their past eight matches and face a tough run home with games against the Bulldogs, Blues and Swans.
Hawthorn will keep second spot after round 19 if the Western Bulldogs lose to North Melbourne at Telstra Dome on Sunday.
Lance Franklin starred for the Hawks with six goals while Cyril Rioli chimed in with three majors.
Luke Hodge (31 disposals) was damaging across half back, racking up a game-high 31 possessions while Shane Crawford was a busy contributor in his 300th game with 28 disposals and one goal.
For Brisbane, Jed Adock, Simon Black, Travis Johnstone and Michael Rischitelli tried hard all day, racking up 20-plus possessions but they were rarely damaging.
Despite boasting two of the most potent forward lines in the competition, both teams opted for defensive strategies in the first half, with both sides only managing a goal apiece in a tight first quarter.
It was one goal apiece well into the second quarter when Franklin moved up the ground and turned the game on its head.
Taking the ball from a throw in at half-back, he streamed down the wing, taking three bounces before picking out Rioli for the team's second goal of the game.
Three minutes later Franklin himself snapped a major, which put the Hawks 14 points up at the main break.
The Hawks broke game open in the third term, booting four goals to one to open up a 28-point lead before steamrolling the Lions with nine majors in the final stanza.
