Johnson to lead Dogs
December 6th 2006 04:34
Western Bulldogs veteran Brad Johnson will lead the club in 2007, taking over the reigns from Luke Darcy.
Johnson proved his ability last season as acting captain after Darcy went down with his second serious knee injury in as many years prior to the commencement of last season.
The 30-year-old had arguably his career best season in 2006, winning the Bulldogs best- and-fairest, picking up All-Australian honours and being named captain of the All-Australian side.
Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade said the club believed it was in Darcy's best interests to focus on football as he recovers from his second knee reconstruction.
“We have no doubt that Luke would be able to fulfil the captaincy on his return to football but felt it was in his best interests to eliminate any additional duties to allow him the time needed to get back to his best. Luke will remain a valuable leader of the Club as a member of our leadership team," he said.
Eade said Johnson had the full support of the club as they aim to build on last year's semi-final appearance.
“Brad was an inspiring Captain in 2006 which was further acknowledged when he was named as All-Australian Captain and he has the full support of the Club as we prepare for a successful 2007,” he said.
Darcy will be a part of the Bulldogs leadership team in 2007 with Scott West named as vice captain.

Hopefully they do well again next year and finally win Scotty West his brownlow in what will surely be his last year of AFL.

I agree, Johnson was the right choice, especially with Darcy coming back from consecutive knee reconstructions.
The Bulldogs made the right decision in allowing him to focus on his recovery and playing AFL football again without the extra burden of leading the side each week.
