Lions crush Cats

BRISBANE remains in the hunt for a top four finish after disposing of an undermanned Geelong side by 43 points at the Gabba on Saturday night.
The Lions took control of the contest in the second term before eventually recording an impressive 16.12 (108) to 9.11 (65) victory.
The result sees Brisbane move to sixth place on the AFL ladder with an 9-6 win-loss record.
The Cats, who were without premiership stars Gary Ablett, Matthew Scarlett, Steve Johnson, Cameron Ling, Brad Ottens, Andrew Mackie, Darren Milburn, James Kelly and the improving Travis Varcoe, have now lost back-to-back games for the first time since round five, 2007.
Some of the gloss was taken off the win for Brisbane with Jed Adcock suffering a serious knee injury early in the first term.
Luke Power racked up a team-high 34 possessions while Simon Black (33 disposals, two goals) had the better of his duel with Geelong young gun Joel Selwood.
Daniel Rich helped set up the win, collecting 15 of his 32 touches in the second term while Ashley McGrath (30 touches) and Josh Drummond (29 possessions) generated plenty of run off half-back.
Brisbane skipper Jonathan Brown starred up forward with 23 touches, 15 marks and four goals while Cheynee Stiller did a superb blanketing job on James Bartel, restricting the 2007 Brownlow medallist to just 15 touches
For the Cats, Paul Chapman helped himself to a game-high 35 disposals while Joel Corey and youngster Simon Hogan also won plenty of the football.
Geelong dominated the clearances and entered inside their forward 50 three more times than the Lions in the opening stanza but they went into quarter-time two points behind after letting themselves down with their poor delivery of the football inside 50.
Brisbane took control of the midfield in the second term and provided their forwards with plenty of quality supply as the Lions slammed on seven goals for the quarter to open up a 26-point lead at half-time.
Goals were hard to come by in a dour third term with Brisbane booting two goals to Geelong’s one to go into the final change with a 31-point break.
Back-to-back goals from Brown in the final stanza snuffed out any hopes Geelong had of getting back into the match as the Lions cruised to their first win over the Cats since round 13, 2005.
