Lions down Dons

May 2nd 2009 12:35
BRISBANE has snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing 43-point win over Essendon at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Lions set up the victory with a dominant first half before eventually running out 17.9 (111) to 9.14 (68) winners.

The win is Brisbane’s first over Essendon since round 2, 2006 and comes just a week after they were thumped to the tune of 93 points by Geelong.

The loss was made worse for the Bombers with veteran defender Dustin Fletcher suffering an ankle injury in his 300th game.

Brisbane skipper Jonathan Brown starred with 24 possessions, 13 marks and five goals while Luke Power was damaging with 24 touches and three goals.

Power received good support from Travis Johnstone, Troy Selwood and Simon Black who won plenty of the football while Daniel Bradshaw booted four goals - three of which came in the final term.

For the Bombers, Jobe Watson racked up a game-high 36 disposals while Jason Winderlich tried hard all night and finished with 23 touches, 11 marks and two goals.

Winderlich and Andrew Lovett (25 possessions, one goal) were the only Bombers that showed a willingness to run and carry.

Essendon skipper Matthew Lloyd had a relatively quiet night but did become just the sixth player to reach 900 career goals in the third term.

Brisbane’s ability to find a marking target up forward was the difference in the first term - four of their five goals came from set shots.

The Dons managed just one goal for the quarter as the Lions went into quarter-time with a 23-point lead.

Two goals in as many minutes from Winderlich got the Bombers to within 15 points in the second term but the Lions hit back with the last three of the first half to open up a commanding 36-point advantage at the main break.

Lovett got his side off to the perfect start in the second half, kicking a goal in the first 24 seconds.

But only three more goals were kicked in what was a lacklustre third term as the Lions went into the final change with a six-goal lead.

The Bombers kicked the first goal of the final stanza through Lloyd and had their chances to get back into the contest but Lloyd and Angus Monfries missed gettable opportunities.

Essendon was made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal with Brown kicking truly from outside 50 to put the result beyond doubt.
