Lions hold off Saints

February 14th 2009 13:48
BRISBANE has celebrated Michael Voss’ first game as coach with a nine-point win over St Kilda at Gold Coast Stadium on Saturday night.

The Lions led by more than seven goals before withstanding a second half fight-back from the Saints to prevail 1.8.8 (65) to 0.8.8 (56).

Scott Harding stepped up in the absence of star forwards Daniel Bradshaw and Jonathan Brown, booting three goals while Travis Johnstone and Jared Brennan were influential with 27 and 21 disposals respectively.

Josh Drummond was damaging with 16 disposals and a super goal while youngster Daniel Rich showed some promising signs during his limited time on the ground.

For the Saints, Brendon Goddard starred with 30 possessions and two goals. Youngster Jarryn Geary was a busy contributor with 25 touches and a goal while former Bulldog Farren Ray impressed in his first game for the club with 24 disposals.

St Kilda started brightly, booting the first goal of the match through promising Ben McEvoy.

Their forward line, which was missing Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke, failed to fire a shot for the rest of the first half as the Lions slammed on the next eight goals, including a super goal to skip out to a seemingly insurmountable 46-point advantage early in the third term.

But the Saints refused to give in and closed to within 26 points heading into the final change thanks to Goddard, who booted two of his sides four goals for the quarter.

St Kilda looked set to run over the top of the Lions with two quick goals from Stephen Milne and a major from Raphael Clarke reducing the margin to just nine points at the 22-minute mark.

The Saints would have been within a goal a minute later but key defender Matt Maguire dropped a relatively easy mark 25 metres out directly in front.

It proved to be a costly mistake with the Lions holding firm in the dying stages.

Brisbane will now face Essendon in the NAB Cup quarter-finals in a fortnight’s time.
