Lions hopeful on Lappin surgery

July 18th 2008 06:49
THE Brisbane Lions remain hopeful that surgery to relieve a trapped nerve will give veteran midfielder Nigel Lappin an outside chance of playing again this season.

Lappin, who has been sidelined since round four with an Achilles tendon problem underwent surgery earlier this week.

Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews said the operation at this stage appears to be a success.

"As soon as the incision is healed in a week or so, then he’ll try and run," Matthews said.

"He said it feels a little bit better to walk than it did last weekend, so that's a positive sign."

"It was always about what was causing this Achilles tendon tendonitis - different parts were getting sore."

"Now the medical people, Nigel, we’re all hoping that the nerve entrapment was the problem all along and having that being remedied he can resume his training."

The 32-year-old hasn't taken part in a full training session since the first month of the season and faces a race against time to play again in 2008.
