BRISBANE has celebrated Michael Voss’ official coaching debut with a hard-fought nine-point win over West Coast at the Gabba on Saturday night.
The Lions trailed by more than six goals early in the second quarter but took control of the contest in a dominant third term before holding on for a 14.11 (95) to 13.8 (86) victory.
Luke Power (35 possessions) and Travis Johnstone (37 disposals, two goals) stepped up in the absence of injured star Simon Black while Daniel Rich was impressive on debut with 21 quality disposals
Rhan Hooper helped set up the win for Brisbane, booting three of his four goals in the third quarter while Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw chimed in with three apiece.
For West Coast, Mark LeCras starred with six goals - five of which came in the first half. Ashley Hansen provided a target across half-forward all night and finished the match with three goals while David Wirrpanda generated plenty of run out of defence.
The Lions kicked the first goal of the match through Bradshaw but the rest of the term belonged to the Eagles with LeCras particularly damaging with three majors.
West Coast continually punished Brisbane for their poor use of the football, moving the football quickly through the middle of the ground as they slammed on six goals to take a 25-point lead into quarter-time.
Further goals to LeCras and Daniel Kerr saw the margin blow out to 38 points and it appeared as if the Eagles were on course for first-up win away from home.
But the Lions refused to be blown away and hit back with late goals to trail by just 25 points at half time.
Brisbane broke the game open in the third term, slamming on seven goals in a stunning 10-minute burst.
They booted nine goals for the quarter to take a handy 16-point advantage into the final change.
West Coast kicked the only two goals of the final term through Hansen and Dean Cox but it was too little too late.
