Lions overrun Tigers
May 9th 2009 08:12
BRISBANE has all but ended Richmond’s season with a 26-point win at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions trailed by 25 points midway through the second term but piled on the last four goals of the quarter to get back into the contest at half-time before slamming on eight of the last 11 goals of the match to record a 15.7 (97) to 10.11 (71) victory.
The Tigers won more of the football but themselves down with their poor decision making and bad skills.
The contest was marred by a sickening concussion to young Richmond defender Alex Rance who was stretchered off the field midway through the third quarter after a clash of heads with Troy Selwood.
Rance was taken to Epworth Hospital for scans on his neck and face while Selwood was able to walk off the field but took no further part in the match.
The result sees Brisbane move to fifth spot on the ladder with a 4-3 win-loss record while the embattled Tigers are languishing in second last place with just one win from their first seven matches.
Simon Black and Luke Power did the damage in the middle, racking up 20-plus disposals while skipper Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw were influential up forward with four and three goals respectively.
For the Tigers, Joel Bowden tried hard all day and finished with a game-high 35 possessions while Nathan Foley, Brett Deledio and Dean Polo also won plenty of the football.
Troy Simmonds was his side’s only multiple goal kicker with four goals while Ben Cousins made a solid return from injury with 22 disposals and one goal.
Richmond smashed the Lions at the clearances 8-2 in the opening stanza and moved the football quickly through the middle of the ground as they slammed on four goals to one to open up a 19-point lead at quarter-time.
Brisbane’s only goal for the term came through Jarred Brennan who snapped truly deep into time-on.
The Tigers looked set to maintain their recent dominance over the Lions when the margin blew out to 25 points midway through the second term when Angus Graham converted after taking a strong mark.
But the Lions got themselves back into the contest thanks to the efforts of Black and Power in the middle and Brown and Bradshaw who booted two apiece for the quarter to reduce the deficit to just one-point at half-time.
Early goals from Michael Rischitelli and Brown saw Brisbane skip out to a 10-point lead in the third term.
The remainder of the quarter wasn’t a great advertisement for the game with both sides struggling to find an avenue to goal.
Despite managing just one goal for the quarter - a major from Simmonds after the siren - the Tigers were down by just three points at three-quarter time.
The final term belonged to the Lions who piled on five of their six goals for the quarter in a 12-minute burst to seal their first win over the Tigers since 2004.
